Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Thu Apr 24, 2025 11:12 pm

Evan Mobley has been named the 24-25 NBA Defensive Player of the Year. Mobley received 35 of 100 First Place Votes, 30 Second Place Votes and 20 Third Place Votes (285 total points). Dyson Daniels finished second while Draymond Green was third.

Mobley ranked sixth in the NBA in blocked shots per game (1.59) and 13th in defensive rebounds per game (7.0).  He contested 10.4 shots per game, the third most among players who played in at least 70% of their team’s games (58 of 82).

Opponents shot 44.5% from the field when Mobley was the closest defender, 3.2% lower than their expected percentage on those shots (47.7%).

The Cleveland Cavaliers had a 108.6 defensive rating when Mobley was on the floor.

Draymond in the top three because flopping sells fouls.

Who voted Giannis a first place vote? Just shows how dumb these awards are.
Jokic is inarguably the best player and most valuable. Without him Denver are a lottery team. Lose SGA, OKC at worst are a play in team. But because of this stupid perception that the MVP needs to be shared around, Jokic will be robbed. Even voters on podcasts say Jokic is better but will vote for SGA.

The need at least some US players to win awards. Watch Daniels being robbed by Cunningham too.

Indeed.
DPY usually goes to a tall player because voters see that in an easier way. What a disgrace.
Daniels on ball situations are astonishing good and he defends for himself and half of Trae's lack of possibilities because of his small frame.
Green there is like a joke.

Probably Jokic is going tom be robbed. It will be difficult to explain in the future how a C with a triple double average did not win the award.

Did they realize that SGA is Canadian... ?

I think Cleveland is the one that got robbed here. Because of the award Cavs will now have to pay Mobley an extra $9M a year starting next year, and that is enough to put them over the 2nd apron if they resign Ty Jerome at market rat.

Dyson's advanced numbers were meh

You'd be purely voting for steals which is almost always viewed as "the wrong" winner by history

e.g.
Westbrook's MVP in 2017 purely on triple double and considering none of the other traditional criteria

Harden with 29-11-8 +120 steals led a WAY better team (55 wins to barely .500 for Russ).
Harden far more efficient offense (led the league in FT rate and assists)
Defensive numbers & TOV rate were very close Russ (both bad)
(And harden had 20+ triple doubles FWIW)

I like Daniels but his deflection/steals rate being historic is only one small part of voter criteria.
