Darvin Ham was serviceable. He wasn't great but he wasn't as bad as people made him out to be.
I think people overestimate the role of a coach. An elite coach can you give you a significant coach, but at the end of the day the players decide the games.

Let me guess, we still don't owe Ham an apology even though JJ could possibly and very likely will lose in the first round? Ham took these Lakers to the Conference finals in his first year with one less super-star. That's gotta say something.

Re: At what point do Lakers fans owe Darvin Ham an apology?
can anyone reasonably explain any of JJ Redick's coaching in the 2nd half of last night?
First of all, let's start with the **** elephant in the room. He's still starting Jaxson Hayes who has proven himself to be unplayable. Have you heard of someone that starts and averages 7.8 MPG in a series? Are they literally starting Hayes just for the opening tip??? Hayes in these playoffs..-10.7 BPM -30.4 ON the court 37.5% FG making 3 of 8 shots. The opening tip CANNOT be so important that Jaxson **** Hayes has to start every single game.
Ok, now what has Dalton Knecht done that makes JJ uncomfortable giving him a few minutes in the playoffs? I mean Reaves is bricking every single open 3 out there, now at least if Knecht was out there he might be shooting it SOMEWHAT better. It's not like Rui is lighting things up, why not consider at least swapping Rui out for Knecht and giving it a shot? The worst part is, now you're backed in a corner and you DON'T HAVE THE FREEDOM TO EXPERIMENT WITH THE ROOKIE IN THE PLAYOFFS. JJ could have tried Knecht in game 1 and seen if he was playable vs. Minnesota. Instead he's decided Knecht is not playable at all and guess what, he's going to end up having to play Knecht anyways BECAUSE THE LAKERS ARE IN DESPERATION MODE.
Ok, now let's talk about the fact that the Lakers have been clearly getting out schemed, I mean game 1 alone Minnesota broke whatever the Lakers prepared, so they switched back to zone, and guess what, Minny just runs their amazing small ball line-up and absolutely cooks the Lakers from the outside. Jade McDaniels, Anthony Edwards, Naz Reid, Julius Randle, these guys are shooting 46% from 3 on 94 attempts across the series. The TWolves as a whole have taken 139 shots. That means that the guys shooting the most are DEMOLISHING the Lakers. They are clogging the paint, forcing perimeter shots and the TWolves are making them without a single issue. It's not like this is weird for their players to make these shots. So clearly they can't defend any aspect of Minnesota.
Oh and don't forget that JJ literally decided that the Lakers just shouldn't have a rotation for the entire second half and guess what, their 40 year old star got gassed and couldn't do anything out there. You'd think that JJ would at least have figured out a line-up where it's just Luka ball without LeBron, nope. JJ believes his best line-up is Luka and LeBron on the court. They work fine on the court, but you CANNOT PLAY THE 40 YEAR OLD PLAYER WITH THE MOST PLAYOFF MINUTES OF ALL TIME AN ENTIRE SECOND HALF JJ REDDICK.
Lakers fans, even if you miraculously come back and win this series, the damage has been done. If the Lakers manage to win this series they're getting demolished in the next round.

I said during game 1 that there's a rookie in this playoffs and it wasn't the ones on the floor. It is Redick. People on this board made fun of me for ridiculing Redick for playing the starters and Bron the entire 2nd half last game. Predictably, they couldn't shoot late game. Game 3 they kept it close despite Luka. Finch made a few adjustments in the last 3 minutes and Redick couldn't counter that 13-1 run and lost. And I agree, where has Knecht been? This guy is turning out to be the worst version of every coach out there in these crucial moments.

Ah, yes, Darvin Hamas, who is currently part of an amazing Bucks coaching staff that is getting their ass whooped by Carlisle to a point where Indiana is running an 11-men rotation because they don't feel threatened by Milwaukee in any way whatsoever and an amazing Bucks coaching staff that hasn't found any solution to any issue other than Gary Trent Jr. hitting a bunch of shots and going 75% on 3's. Yes, we definitely owe that man an apology.
Whatever issue you have with Redick, and there are plenty of reasons to, Darvin Hamas was worse.

Re: At what point do Lakers fans owe Darvin Ham an apology?
Can't believe I am defending the Lakers here, but if you think that Redick isn't a huge upgrade, you are either blind or just hating. When Ham made the WCF, the West was historically weak. The Kings were 3rd seed with 48 wins, the same record as these "bum ass Grizzlies" that just got spanked by OKC. Ham wouldn't make it out of the first round this year either.
Redick made some mistakes, but overall, he's a huge improvement in every facet. While the Luka trade was a blessing in the long run, it created an extremely unbalanced roster for this year, Redick did a great job to hide its flaws in the regular season in the first place. Having DFS as your best big man was always going to be exploitable. Ham never showed that he has the basketball mind to do any meaningful adjustments nor implement any semblence of a system, and you are gonna tell me that he would do better this series?
Give Redick a couple of seasons to grow, let LAL properly build around Luka, and they're gonna be more than fine. I wish they wouldn't be, but they will.

? You want to blame Darvin Ham for being an assistant coach on a team that’s been mid all year because their roster sucks

I think the time is now. I think many people would consider MIN winning in 5 this year to be a massive upset compared to losing to DEN in 5 last year.

Remember Denver was a top two seeded team with a 57-25 record last year, so the Lakers was projected to lose to them, whereas Vs the T-Wolves, the Wolves were a huge underdog (probably due to the Luka trade).

You know JJ messed up when KENDRICK PERKINS has a fair criticism. As I mentioned earlier, why couldn't JJ just run some Luka only minutes? You mean to tell me he couldn't rest LeBron for Jarred Vanderbilt to play a similar bruising defensive role to what LeBron did and let a heliocentric and PROVEN Luka Doncic offense run the game?

The Lakers made a conference finals run because they got lucky with some matchups, they weren’t a legit contender at all which is why they got swept by a team that would sleep walk through 40 minutes of the game and then just dust them off when they felt like it.
Also lol at everyone that tried to convince me that Jaxson Hayes was good now.

No matter how many times you guys bump this thread it won't make Darvin Ham a better coach than JJ. The answer is "never".

I don't think those were legit criticisms, though. He listed a bunch of bench guys who have sucked. He didn't discuss what Lebron meant to the team defensively or on the glass, or as a scoring threat given the deficiencies of others. He mentioned a 10-point lead as if that mattered. He mentioned Gabe Vincent, who is a guard, as if he was relevant to substitution patterns for Lebron.
As usual, Perk didn't do anything but blow gas.

not resting LeBron James for Jarred Vanderbilt is 100% a legit criticism. Vanderbilt can do a similar role to what LeBron did defensively. It's not like LeBron was some offensive guru in that second half and big part of it was due to his exhaustion.
Also is Dalton Knecht somehow more unplayable than Jaxson Hayes in the playoffs?
