Sengun spent some time on the bench this season being punished for being caught out of position. Ime Udoka doesn't like playing anyone who isn't fully committed to the defense, that's why Cam Whitmore isn't in the rotation. And I think it worked really well in the way of sculpting him into a passable defender. I think as a ceiling Sengun is probably an upper middle class man's Jokic. 24 PPG, 12 RPG, 6 APG. Probably not the kind of guy you want to build around, but an excellent Robin.

Not trolling, what do you think I have wrong?

I don't agree that his ideal spot on a championship roster is as a 6th man. The Rockets have kept Golden State far below their season average with Sengun playing high minutes. He can survive on the floor defensively. Offensively, he has value as a simple screener, short roller, and offensive rebounder.

Beating Golden State does not make you a contender.

He's showing he's capable of staying on the floor when a high IQ and skilled team is trying to attack him. Give him and the Rockets credit where credit is due. Idk what you want him to further show. He's not a civ on defense.

Sengun was nevee doubled by the warriors. Yes, they daring him to score 40 on them as it doesnt really matter as they knew how to stop him in the end.
His ceiling is a trade piece for giannis or a good star big for kd..

Ascrilas wrote:We're not in 2022 anymore, Sengun is a good defender. He doesn't fit the typical archetype of a vertical rim protector, but he surely isn't a liability. Pretty much every stat proves this.

His touch and scoring efficiency have taken a big hit this year, if he can figure this out and improve his range and shooting, we're looking at a perennial All-NBA player.

Can he become the best player on a championship team? Probably not, but I wouldn't totally rule it out. He's 22, highly skilled, very smart and more athletic than many believe imo. Realistically, he'll be a 25/10/5 type of player in his prime.

Şengün looks a bit pudgy and has that weird gait but he's deceptively athletic. He's not elite by any means, but he's not as unathletic as Jokic and Sabonis, to whom he's frequently compared. He's closer to Pau Gasol, who is my general comparison for him anyway.

He can actually throw it down and rise up for a chasedown block. He's also crazy flexible which really helps him contest going straight up with his arms up in the air. He's a defender of the Al Horford mold, not as good yet though.

Hopefully it’s at least 8 feet tall so he doesn’t bang his head on anything

If he becomes a solid shooter, he could be the best player on a title contender. He's already an all NBA caliber player who's good enough to be 2nd best. Swap Jalen Green or FVV with Donovan Mitchell and the Rockets immediately jump to being a top 3 contender.

He's only 22 and in his first post-season he's played very well in most of the games. I really don't understand people describing him as a bad defender.

I'm not sure if he has an MVP level floor but he could easily be a guy who has a 5 year run as a guy in the 6-15 range. And it is possible his ceiling is higher than that. By contrast I don't get the idea at all that he'll prove to be unplayable on good teams.

This. I mean if his shot becomes smooth and efficient like Jokic he could have that exact level of impact in a game especially if he's a better defender. People need to realize he is 22 years old and just got an all star nod and solid playoff experience this year.

If they had better shooters the Rockets could be effective running a large chunk of their offense through him. He likely won't become Jokic but he could still be the centerpiece of a good offense.

Warriors have always prioritized getting the ball out of Green’s hands, pretty much more than any other team I can think of. They didn’t for one game and it cost them. Now that might mean they think Green is more dangerous or it might mean they think Sengun deals with traps/blitzes better than Green, but it’s been a pretty consistent philosophy over the past couple seasons. I think it’s probably a combination, in that hot Green > hot Sengun AND Sengun makes you pay more for doubling. But Green made progress as a playmaker late in the season so it’s still all in flux.

Edit: Warriors lack of size might be another factor, in that he can usually see/pass over the doubles/blitzes/traps whereas Green is more effectively blinded/sealed off.

That's more to do with Draymond being Sengun's primary defender. Sengun is only a scoring threat in the paint and he can't bully Dray, so the warriors are comfortable playing him 1on1 and letting everyone else stay home. They know he's a great passer that'll put them in the blender if they send steady doubles.

Meanwhile, Jalen operates from the perimeter. If he can get downhill, he'll collapse the defense and the Rockets can start attacking closeouts. That's probably their most efficient half court offense against the Warriors. But Jalen isn't a great playmaker and can't punish doubles the way Sengun can.

Warriors can afford to guard Sengun this way because they happen to have a generational defender at his position. It's not an indictment on Sengun.

It’s not just shooting, it’s touch and bbiq. Those are not close to the level of jokic. The ball handling of Jokic is better so is hand-eye coordination.

Alperen Engines game and mindset will greatly grow from this series with Golden State. I expect next season to be a career best.
