The Giannis to Nets Rumor Thread

Post#1 » by Paradise » Thu May 1, 2025 10:05 pm

Yeah, this is legit looking like it’s picking up some steam. Can we merge all threads together? I’ve heard that Nets FO and players are aware that there’s mutual interest. Milwaukee asked about Cam Thomas before.

This is looking like Melodrama & Dwightmare. This is all going to fall on Joe Tsai and his discipline.

Giannis spotted in downtown NYC with his wife and kids just raised the rumor mill.

Don't want him. Build with a young core. Thank you.

Unless he really pushes for Brooklyn it's hard to envision him going to Nets. SAS makes a lot of sense because they have the right combination of picks, young players to trade, and Wemby/Fox preassembled to fit well with him. Though who knows if that's a place he will want to go. HOU/OKC/BOS/GS each make some sense as well. At his exit press conference he said he wishes he was still playing, I just don't see what he wouldn't prioritize going to a team that with him would become the title favorite overnight. The Nets odds here feel useful as a bargaining tool to drive prices up.

If it is legit and he somehow wants to go to Brooklyn, their best package probably starts with a CamT S&T and a bunch of picks. Probably at least 2 of this year's, including the lotto pick. Perhaps someone like Clowney included as well. I'd guess at least 1 future unprotected NYK pick gets in there and maybe the crappy PHI pick that may not even convey to round things out. That's 1 young scorer, 1 young big, 4 FRPs with 2 being this year and 1 being top 10. SAS and maybe HOU/OKC could each beat that if they wanted to and be the odds on favorite for the next 2-3 titles, which is why I just don't see him as a Net.

Now if we want to dream a little and pretend he pushes to go to Nets with a deal like that, you've got Giannis at $54m, Clax at $25m, CamJ at $21m. if you were to maximize cap space by renouncing everyone else except minimum salary cap holds/rookie deals (roughly $9*3m = $27m) you should be under the $154m cap by about $30m if you are simultaneously renouncing a minimum hold. The DLo cap hold is $28m, if instead of renouncing that they extend him on something like a 2 year deal at $15m per, they still have room to perhaps do some kind of deal to bring back Sharpe or poach someone like Ty Jerome. Could possibly do both going for Jerome with a non-tax payer multi-year MLE (which should be about $15m).

Is this team advancing more than 1 round in the playoffs?

Jerome
Russell
CamJ
Giannis
Clax

bench = sharpe, wilson, keon, whitehead, 2 FRPs, etc.

probably not without making some kind of follow-up trade for another star, though they would potentially have ammunition left to do that. KD or Trae in a follow-up would maybe make things interesting.

*obviously if you move up in the lotto to 1 or 2 that will change the calculus here, Flagg or Harper likely being day 1 starters make Brooklyn more appealing OR give them a top asset to deal, though I think Marks would hold the line and not deal the 1st/2nd pick even for Giannis

on queue Windy says keep an eye on HOU/SAS. Either would seem like a better fit than BKN unless Giannis really wants to be in NYC, and each has just as much to offer in trade, maybe more.

So it seems like its HOU or BK based on the article and Vegas odds.

https://www.thesportsgeek.com/blog/giannis-next-team-odds-predictions-picks/

Where would you rather see him go?

Unbiased this might be hard.

City-wise BK>HOU every day of the year.
Talent-wise HOU>BK today.
Talent-wise BK>HOU if BK spends their cap space (only team in the league with it).
Family-wise unsure what he wants more.
Coach-wise possibly a tie
GM-wise possible a tie
Owner-wise - I do not know
Pick-wise BK>HOU

This really might be very close.

If Giannis has a player he wants to bring with him to BK then they likely have the edge then as its all about cap space and who has more firsts to trade.

BK currently has $91,807,098 and HOU has $14,233,398. I think that might be the big difference.

But, who does he want to bring with him? That is likely the biggest secret.

i dont see why Giannis would want to come here, our roster is trash and he barely makes the playoffs here unless another star wants to tag along. We should focus on Jokic or just do a full rebuild. This seems like wishful thinking when there's at least 5 other teams that he'll make an instant contender and can put up a reasonable package for him.

And what if it's not just Giannis
What if it's Giannis and Lebron , or Giannis and whoever.
Nets can do that with the current treasure trove.
Nets are BIG city so the Big Superstars are interested.

Obviously Giannis is an amazing talent and a top tier player in the NBA. My concerns are, that we have been down this road not too long ago and it didn't end well. I will admit it was fun while it lasted. But I am hesitant to go back again. Also I hope Giannis stays in Milwaukee.

Let's see where the ping pong balls bounce next week. I'm good with the "Organic" rebuild, it may take a while but will be worth it.

I love it, Giannis is setting the stage for a trade request this summer.

My dream offseason:

1) win the draft lottery, select Flagg

2) trade Johnson, Claxton and as many 1sts as it takes, other than Flagg, for Giannis and Paul George

3) re-sign Thomas and Sharpe to team friendly deals

4) sign and couple of cheap smart vets like CP3 and Horford, to mentor Cam & Day'Ron

THOMAS, GEORGE, FLAGG, ANTETOKOUNMPO, SHARPE
Paul, Whitehead, Wilson, Clowney, Horford

Feel bad for the Wizards too.

I expected the Nets to get 8, but wtf... Mavs first overall? Yeah... Clearly not rigged.

What if get Trae Young for cheap?

Hawks are done with him and he doesn't have much value due to his contract

Then you give up assets for Giannis. Who clearly wants to be in New York.

Young
Giannis
Cam J

That looks pretty good to me. Are we really going to keep tanking which the Knicks take up all the attention in NYC for the forseeable future?

id do it. would imagine clax and camt would go the other way in one trade or the other along with picks obviously. but i suspect SAS is the more likely destination for Giannis.

i could kind of see the nets being interested in trae apart from giannis with the way the lotto seems to be so uncertain these days. or who knows maybe they go for FVV in free agency to try to do the same culture build houston just did?

Why would Giannis want to go to Wemby's team and a small market?

I think Houston is more likely if anything.

Trae/Giannis creates an excellent rivalry with the Knicks and lets Giannis be in NYC.

Fox, Wemby, Giannis is an instant winner that fits together really well and they'd probably also hold on to 1 of Harper/Castle.

I could see Houston but he's not as good a fit there bc they lack shooting. Not sure whether or not it would mean they can't bring back FVV but I assume that gets harder. Could also see OKC if they lose and feel the need to push chips in. All 3 of those teams can put together better offers than Nets and any of the 3 would go to the top of the odds for title contender. Brooklyn even with Trae is a pretty big step back, he'd have to really want to be in NY.
