Re: Run it Back or Upgrade?
Since the Rockets treat Amen Thompson as untouchable, we should trade Ausar Thompson to the Rockets with them likely overpaying for Ausar in order to keep Amen happy. Ausar’s potential sounds awesome, but mentally, he rushes himself way too much. I’d offer something along the lines of:
Harris & Thompson
for
FVV, Jabari Smiths & a late 1st
Holland, Beasley, Smith, THJ and Stewart will split minutes between forward positions (THJ & Stewart will play spot minutes).
FVV, Ivey, Schroeder & Cunningham will offer stability on the offensive end, and could unlock Duren’s offensive ability as the roll man.

I really don’t think Harris is going anywhere. He played well. We do need to find a long term solution at PF, but maybe not next year.
THJ and Beasley will likely be retained as long as they don’t ask for too much money. Same w Schroeder. Beasley might get a big offer elsewhere.
Fontecchio is the obvious odd man out. Sassar too.

Same. Deal is so lop sided it looks like something a fan of another team would post. Ausar is our 2nd most valuable piece.

I don’t understand the hype around Ausar Thompson. Yes, he’s a good defender and a decent rebounder, but the offensive consistency will ultimately be detrimental to his career. Also, his foul rate is very alarming. As a comparison, Amen reminds me of Andre Iguodala while Ausar reminds me of Matisse Thybulle when he was in the All-Defensive team. Do you guys think he could be someone like Jaden McDaniels or Aaron Gordon? While the league, as well as most of us here, values Ausar highly, we should sell high. I don’t want to hold on to a player because of potential and then having to trade him for peanuts later. Once upon a time, I thought free throw shooting as well as hiring a defensive coach can unlock a certain player’s potential as well, but it never happened. Now we have a player who’s a good defender that is still viewed with potential, we can scour around to see what his value is. A solid point guard along with a young prospect would be a start. The most ideal player I’d love to have is Trey Murphy.
We have to build around Cunningham, Duren and Ivey (Amen is 4th in behind those 3). It’s infuriating to watch Cade getting blitz on offense without having anyone besides Ivey/Schroeder (if he stays) who can make a sound decision. So we still need to have solid point guard, such as a younger Mike Conley, who can calm things down.

We project to have about 18M of cap space after Cade gets named All-NBA. If we can somehow dump Fontecchio (to Brooklyn with a second rounder?) then that frees up close to 26M to make a competitive offer sheet that Memphis doesn't match. Then sign Beasley to the MLE. Unfortunately we won't have the space to bring back Schroder in this scenario, and THJ we should just let walk.
Duren/Stewart
Harris/Aldama
Ausar/Holland
Ivey/Beasley
Cade/Ivey
Don't think that's possible. If we want to use the MLE we'd have to operate as a over the cap team.
You would have to sign Beasley out of that 26 million in cap you created.
The full MLE can be used if we're over the salary cap but under the luxury tax line. I wonder if there's a chain of events where we can sign Aldama into our cap space, make a small trade that puts us over the cap and then we can use the full MLE. Salary cap gurus will know better than me if that's even possible though.
If not then Beasley signing on for 7.2M per year would be the dream result (although unlikely I think).

Re: Run it Back or Upgrade?
We have so many guys who are very young and aren't going to suddenly become title contenders next year even if we add KD somehow. Give them at least another season to grow before we start making win-now moves. I don't want to bring in more vets to force our young guys to stay on the bench when we need to know what we have in them, and see how they'll develop. Especially Ausar. Run it back completely, keep your powder dry.
Only thing I'd like to see added is a plausible backup PF for Harris if we aren't going to play Fonteccio when it matters. Harris is the only PF shaped guy on the roster, and we had some issues when he got into foul trouble against the Knicks. Larry Nance Jr. is a free agent and I think he could be had for cheap.

Re: Run it Back or Upgrade?
There's honestly not much available for us out there without gutting our team.
Between our $18mil in cap space and Room Exception($8mil minimum), we should be good to sign THJr Shröder and Beasley. Hopefully Reed takes vet minimum cause hes a great locker room guy and backup to the backup
Room Exception:Although this is also a mid-level exception of sorts, it’s colloquially known as the “room” exception, since it’s only available to teams that go below the cap and use their cap room. The room exception can be used to sign players for up to three years, with 5% annual raises.
We run it back and then have lots of team friendly contracts we can trade if someone legit comes up.
Those 3, Tobias, Fontecchio, Sasser with draft picks could get us someone substantial to go with Cade Ivey Ausar Holland Duren Stew

Re: Run it Back or Upgrade?
We're not trading Ausar unless its for an established star. Pistons should also put Ausar in the "untouchable" zone for all reasonable intents and purposes.

Re: Run it Back or Upgrade?
It's an interesting dynamic because the Pistons have the best asset base they've had in years with all their picks at their disposal now and the young guys almost universally raising their trade value but there's something to be said for team chemistry and trying to run it back with a healthy Ivey and Stewart mixed in.
I think Langdon will do everything in his power to run it back, the chemistry was undeniable and that missing scoring piece in Ivey could help them take the next step. I don't know if blowing it up to bring in a big time player (1B option with Cade) is the right move or even feasible but it should certainly be explored by Langdon at the very least. This team is young but it's not THAT young, Cade and Stewart will be entering their 5th season, Ivey and Duren their 4th, Ausar 3rd, Holland 2nd. Definitely still young but the contention window should be opening up starting next season.

Naz Reid has a Player Option for $14M
How do we pay him $20M+ w/o cap space?
I'd be surprised if he doesn't pick that up. He seems happy in Minnesota.
I'd be shocked. He'll easily get more than that on the open market and I'm not sure the Wolves can afford him. Players care about money over happiness, lets be honest.

A lot of the time happiness is getting paid for what you’re worth

I think Ausar is a GREAT defender, not just a good one. Sure he got called for a lot of fouls against The Flopper, but not only will he learn from that, refs will start to respect his D more and not make those calls. He will be on many All D teams in the future. Teams can always use that.
I don’t expect him to become a lights out 3pt shooter, but if he did, he would likely be an All Star. But if he can keep the ball moving, limit TOs, and keep cutting to the basket, he’ll be productive for our offense.
He’s still so young. Can’t trade him now.

Hope you are sitting down, but we need Bol Bol.
Seems like Fontecchio and a 2nd is enough with PHX likely shaking up their roster. Throw in Rodney McGruder and get this done.
Seriously though, Bol would be a fun guy to bring in off the bench. I consider it an upgrade.

Rodney McGruder hasn't been a Piston since the prior season... He's out of the league playing in Italy...
I don't even want to discuss the rest...
