To be fair, sorta. His on/off in several playoffs was terrible with the nuggets posting some outlier bad defensive performances, seemingly centered around guards going off against jokic's drop coverage. It probably wasn't as bad as the numbers suggested, but it also wasn't good. And I say that as a jokic defender.

Yeah, with the Facu/Rivers backcourt gantlet. They weren't great shooters, but hey, at least they played Caruso/Jrue type of D.

You mean when his guards were Monte Morris and Will Barton facing the NBA champion Warriors?

Or are we talking the year when it was those guys, Austin Rivers and Campazzo against the Finals loser Suns after beating Dame?

This is why I hate the advanced analytics era. You can just point to numbers without any context or even watching the games.

I've watched a lot of basketball in my life and one thing I've been extremely impressed by is that Jokic game stays the same or improves in the playoffs. He doesn't melt in the spotlight or hasn't taken a massive dip. He also had a lot of injured key teammates as well.

If you're not going to include the context in this analysis, I think this is more of a witch-hunt than anything.

On/off stats aren't analytics. They're counting stats that tell you nothing about the player's performance.

His on/off was bad because he's been forced to play with guys that would win 15 games at max, two years in a row.

Maybe if he had guards that didn't drop out of the nba as soon as they left the Nuggets he would have done better on defense.

Uhh yeah, I said "sorta" and that it wasn't as bad as it looked and that I'm a jokic defender, but it was still concerning. That doesn't sound like a witch hunt. I'm well aware that jokic maintains his box score numbers as well as anyone. Context, in this case, is he maintained those numbers but his teams defense was shredded with some of the worst DRtg's ever and his own on/offs went significantly negative for a couple of years. For someone with a known defensive weakness of foot speed and playing in an era where it's more important than ever for bigs, that has to be noted until it stops.

That seemed to get rectified in the title run when Denver had a good defense, so it's easier to look back and say maybe those are the outliers and this is the new norm, but it certainly was an issue.
