Man I'm growing tired of F Alvarez, never hitting, always injured. This was a pathetic loss, 0/10 w/ RISP?

He's picked it up since then. His OBP is also around .350. I'm still holding out hope he can be what he was projected to be.
Also, what's Mendoza smoking? Hitting Marte in the cleanup spot? That's nuts.

I don't know what to say about Marte at cleanup, except that the players after him aren't hitting a ton either. (Nimmo, Vientos, McNeil, . . . though as you pointed out, Alvarez has started to hit.
Small sample sizes with all of them though.
7 runs today is nice. 2 homers by Soto. I like the way Soto's got a 125 OPS+ and he's hitting badly. Now many players can say that. It's a long season. A lot can happen. Tidwell's outing was disappointing, but it's sometimes good to give the youngsters the ball and see what happens.

Some encouraging signs for Diaz.

Re: OT: Official Mets' 2024 Thread (p. 19)
The good:
2 homers by Baty tonight. It'd be great if he's started to figure things out. Another lefty bat in the lineup wouldn't hurt.
and another good inning by Diaz.
The bad, well, they lost 6-5 and Megill is coming back to Earth. ERA over 3. He wasn't likely to continue leading the league in ERA.
They're not going to win them all.

Big series against the Yanks starts tonight. A single series doesn't matter except for bragging rights, and Yankee fans get to boo Soto.

That didn't go well. Yanks won 2 out of 3 pretty big. The one we won had a controversial call. Soto walked a lot though. Like they didn't want to pitch to him.
3 in Boston, then a day off, then 3 at home against the Dogers. A few wins wouldn't hurt.
On the plus side, Brett Baty might be legit. He's put together a pretty good stretch.

8-10 over our last 18 games. We need to turn this around. Bats are silent again.

Mets are reverting back to the expected norm. Nobody seriously thought they were a top team in baseball right? They have WAY too many holes. This is a Wildcard team at best unless they make some major pitching changes at the deadline.
SELL THE TEAM, JIM!!!

We're getting Manaea, Montas, and Blackburn back soon. Besides, it's our hitting that sucks right now.
I would make a play for Raphael Devers who's presently very unhappy in Boston. He wants to play 3B, his natural position.

Devers is a fun bat, but he's a negative glove. He's also owed like 8 years and 250 million and I worry about a player who won't switch positions for the team. . . . I'm torn. Besides, Baty can field and he's starting to hit. I'm not saying no to Devers, only that I'm not fully sold.

In other news, top of the 10th, runner starts at 2nd. Betts is awarded the base, Freeman at the plate and what does Diaz do? He plunks freeman, then walks the bases loaded, then gets 3 outs on two weakly hit balls. But the plunking of Freeman is what I love.
I like that they start a runner on 2nd in the 10th. No more 15 or 17 inning games, which I hate. Those games are pitching staff killers.
Still 5-5 going into the 11th.

Nice to win one after that 2-6 stretch. Soto gets 2 hits, drives in 2 runs. I don't think we've heard the last of the Soto drama though. Lindor got off to an even worse start and there wasn't this much fuss, but then Soto's contract is in the stratosphere. Lindor's contract was near the top dollar signing at the time but not record shattering like Soto's.

The fans were very supportive of Juan and gave him a nice hand when he came up for his first AB and he came close to hitting one out. Then he hit the wall in RF with the bases loaded.
In other news, it appears that Baty has won back the 3B job from Vientos now that he’s starting to figure things out at the plate.
Any news on when he get Manaea and Montas back?

Re: OT: Official Mets' 2024 Thread (p. 19)
Minor league news should always come with a grain of salt, but
Ronny Mauricio is tearing it up in AAA now that he's playing again. There's still some swing and miss in his periferals, but he hits the ball hard when he connects.
Jesus Baez (who BA liked a lot) had a cold start but he's starting to heat up. He & Zack Thornton won players of the week.
Carson Benge is crushing it. He's looking like the Mets aced that pick, and 4th round pick Eli Serrano started off blazing. He's cooled off some, but he's a nice bat/glove combo prospect.
And McLean leapfrogged to the mets #2 spot in BA's latest list and he made a quick promotion to AAA. Tong continues to cruz this year in BInghamton.

https://www.milb.com/brooklyn/video/eli-serrano-iii-throws-out-a-pair-of-runners-at-home
Thornton's motion looks a little high effort and he's not on any top 10 lists. Maybe top 20, but he's fun to watch.
Jack Wenniger is off to a nice start too.
Jacob Reimer, who missed most of last season due to injury, is cruising in Brooklyn and could have a future. Might be more of a 1st baseman/DH than 3rd baseman, but his hitting is interesting.
and, just because he's fun, Chris Suerro kind of a catcher/OF type has some pop in his bat. Good catchers are rare, so he might have a future as a backup if he keeps making progress.
and AJ Ewing (ranked 27 in MLB's list at the bottom) is crushing it this year. He looks like he's figured something out. Even after an early promotion to Brooklyn, he continues to hit, hitting .352 so far, with a good walk to K rate and 18 stolen bases. Not much power, but everything else is there. Not bad for a 2B/OF combo, maybe a Jeff McNeil type. A fun thing about Ewing, he's only 20 and he looks like he should be promoted to AA.
and coming back from injury, Corey Collins, a 6th round pick last year, draws walks as well as anyone. It's early to know much about him, but 16 walks in 12 games is Youkilis territory. He was an impressive bat in college last year who fell to the 6th round. Potentially a nice pick-up by NY. Granted, it's just A ball, so, give it time.
As for the player who came almost out of nowhere, Ryan Lambert, according to some, looks like he could be our future closer. He throws hard and he's got attitude. 30Ks in 18 innings this year out of the pen. His Brooklyn numbers were god-like, but he's struggled with walks since his promotion to Bing, but he's still throwing hard and getting Ks. Not bad for an 8th round pick last year.

As I said, big grain of salt, because half the time, prospects struggle bigly when they see majors, but the Mets system has a lot of depth. There's a lot Even if 2/3rds don't amount to much, they have a lot of interesting players in their system. It's a numbers game and they have volume. They don't have a top guy, not since Alvarez (and maybe Baty), but they have a lot of interesting guys.
MLB's list is dated. It doesn't show recent rises or struggles. Benge, Tong, McLean have all probably risen. Sproat is struggling a bit in AAA, Clifford has been mixed. Baez started off cold but last few games he's been sizzling. Pena hasn't been seen yet. Mauricio has sizzling numbers over just a few games but poor peripherals, Gilbert, the opposite. The numbers aren't great but the peripherals are good.
