Predicting Jersey Retirement for Laker Nation is a Truly difficult thing to do. Like, it's almost a greater accomplishment than the Hall

I don't think it is, really.

Cooper was a fan fave...played his entire career with us...won 5 rings, and was our defensive talisman....back when defense was something. Nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing...he gets into the HoF........SUDDENLY.....we retire his jersey. The Lakers have been very clear about this. If your a Laker, and you get into the HoF...your jersey will be retired. This has nothing to do with what I WANT it to be, or what I think should be, or none of that. It's the rules they've stated for years.

Now I will give the caveat for a player like Malone, who literally played 1 year here. I'm curious to see how they handle Dwight. He ended up with 3 years all in all. Did win a title. I'm very interested in how they handle that. Truthfully....I think they would do it...except I think a little polling will show that almost everyone will think it's lame, and they won't.

But Davis??? Absolutely they will. As soon as he's in the HoF. Again....'should' is not in play here. Will they? Yes

In fact....if there is any question left, read this bio on Wilkes from the website on all the Laker retired numbers:

Retired on December 28, 2012 in honor of Jamaal Wilkes, who was a member of four NBA championship teams (three with Lakers in 1980, 1982 and 1985, and one with Golden State (1975)) ... ranks among the franchise leaders in points (10th, 10,601), field goals made (4,553) and steals (9th, 706) ... three-time NBA All-Star (1976, 1981, 1983) ... two-time NBA All-Defensive Second Team (1976, 1977) ... 1975 NBA Rookie of the Year award winner ... averaged 18.4 points per game in eight seasons with the Lakers and averaged at least 20 points per game for three straight seasons from 1980-82 ... inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012.

Did you catch it? It's the first sentence, and the last sentence. The middle part is this list of reasons why he is so deserving of the honor...and yet it took over a quarter of a century from his retirement, for them to finally recognize his many worthy achievements.....oh wait......he got into the HoF earlier in 2012, and so at the end of 2012, they finally got around to it.

I dunno. I see your points. AI would definitely agree with you, and perhaps lakers org will follow suit.
But for the living breathing laker fan.. there's just something about it I can't put my finger on..
The feeling of context at the moment and the hazy pattern recognition of it all, just suggests to me that he shouldn't get his number retired.

Maybe it just needs passage of time, as you also mentioned.
Decades pass, and finally an old decrepit AD strolls in on his walker, and the crowd then accepts that it feels right to retire this old man's number.

I've heard it through the grapevine..NBA gods have already designated Los Angeles LAKERS as NBA Champions in near future. The destiny is real. TRUST ME.

So... which side of Kobe's statue does Dwight Howard's go on? 12 or 39 retired?

"Jersey Rules"? Really?

Davis doesn't belong in the rafters here. Maybe we can put up a "DNP being washed" placeholder up there instead.

Jersey retirement should be for players that defined an era in our history. Davis won an iffy championship during COVID. He led us to zero follow up finals and some very lackluster finishes given we had 2 of the most popular players in the league.

At BB Reference he has a known nickname of "Street Clothes"... let that sink in. Maybe we could hang that wild gold sweat suit with the matching ski cap he wore up there instead.

I guess I see our retired jerseys a little differently than you do. The rules for the second winningest franchise ever would seem to be more than a stint of good stats and some personal achievements.

And don't get me started on the number of people who make the HOF each year. We don't need to induct players every year just to get a show on ESPN. The HOF is so watered down.

Well your a little chippy tonight. Been a while...good to see you.

First off....nobody's thrown the "Street clothes" name around here more than I have. Secondly, you can see our jersey retirements as you see fit....I made it VERY, VERY clear that there's 2 different statements here: WILL he get his jersey retirement....and SHOULD he. Your neck deep in the "should he" swamp....but the question posed in the thread is "Will he". So calm down, and don't talk to me like I'm 5.

First, I wrote it, and stop acting 5 and I'll stop treating you like you are. :D

I'm not a fan of retiring jerseys for players in the first place unless they are the best of an era or one of the best ever. The current thoughts seem rooted in the idea that everyone tied for 80th place so everyone gets one like an anniversary Opera show.

I just want to say that it's fine to discuss what we think should happen, in addition to what will happen determined by the front office, so I apologize for not really making that clear, I know you were arguing from the point of the title of the thread, so I appreciate that.

I am not sure what the scuffle's about with Landsberger; I dont know what he means by that youre acting 5, because I find your posts valuable to this thread and adds to the weight of the argument here (and in other threads here in lakers subforum, even though they can be polarizing at times... which adds to the argument at the end of the day though).

But I guess we can mostly agree with Landsberger (in terms of "should") that handing out accolades have sort of lost their meaning over the years. Sort of washed out in its impact especially with the Lakers. As more front-page headline players come to play here and leave without really achieving much, maybe due to climate change in professional basketball, culture, or whatever. it does get complicated.

Well it started with him saying something to the effect of he and I having a different opinion of what it means to have your number retired, and how special it is.

But he's not the only one...it's a pandemic these days with people making bizarre associations in logic, that since you say Wembanyama is taller than Shaq....your therefore saying he's gonna be better, or that you somehow like him more. It's this weird leap in logic. Because you recognize facts, that must be how you feel as well....it's nonsense, and frankly I'd expect much more outa Landsberger. I think he just wanted the argument.

Here:
I guess I see our retired jerseys a little differently than you do. The rules for the second winningest franchise ever would seem to be more than a stint of good stats and some personal achievements.

You can read the full comment on the prior page, if you care. It's got a couple smarmy comments, and digs....but at the heart of it is this insane notion that I somehow agree with it, because I've said that that's what's gonna happen.

Look...Astronomers think the sun is gonna blow up and swallow the earth some day....do they hate humanity? It's stupid.

So I'm simply pointing out that the title of the post is "WILL" AD get his number retired. If it was "Should"...I'd have a very different answer. It's actually a pretty big differentiation there. But I think Landsberger knows that, and just wanted the argument, and to take some shots....maybe shots were involved, you'd have to ask him.

But it's all good. I like Landsberger. He's old-school....but so am I, so a little pepper in his comments is fine with me.

But for the record...one last time....the title is "WILL" he get his number retired. And the answer is yes. You can take it to the bank. He'll get into the HoF, and the second he does....the Jersey retirement committee will get assembled. Has nothing to do with whether I think he deserves it or not.

Absolutely. I prob wouldn't have retired Wilts jersey, tbh. I say 'probably' because I wasn't there..so I can't fully appreciate what it meant. It's prob unfair for me to make that determination. But on face value.....he played 5 years, and they were at the end. His last 3 years were statistically shadows of his prime (although we did win a title then). If you wanna get controversial....I prob don't put Pau up there (And I love Pau). I certainly wouldn't put Lebron there....so do I even have to share my feelings on AD?

Like I said...I'm old-school. I think it's all getting watered down. I'd kick 3/4's of the HoF out....including Cooper (one of my fave Lakers) but I'd still keep his jersey retired. Cooper was a Laker great...not a B-Ball great. Much like Fisher. I think it's stupid that we care if they make the HoF. Has nothing to do with it, IMO.

Look...I think this is a great conversation. But it's all in the 'should' world. Fair enough. I could go down the "should" rabbit hole for days, but if you ask me "Will Lebron get his jersey retired with all 3 teams?" the answer is 'of course'. We all know its gonna happen. He'll prob even get a statue here.

Retire his number. That's what her deserve. No statue. He doesn't belong in the tier of Fish, Lamar, Horry, Fox etc.

And even if I like having Luka, I still think we have a better chance of winning the chip this year if we have AD.

Oh... it won't be the last time. It's why you are still on ignore after 7 years.
