The Suns have to nail their next head coaching hire

No different to any year

Very true! But with this summer especially, and how much Ishbia mortgaged our future, and the potential to fall into a long rebuild if they fail ( again)?? Then any really adverse or disastrous outcomes might incentive Booker to finally demand out too!

But yes, they absolutely should be setting such goals every year!

What I'm saying is, it doesn't really matter what the situation is, you want to get a coach that helps with the team goals . Whether you're rebuilding, getting a HC who isn't rushing to be competitive is important. If you're treadmilling, you want a team that can elevate the players. If you're looking to take the next step, you definitely want a HC who can help you get to that next level.

It just feels journalistic overdramatisation

Here is a PG that I would love to get in a KD trade...Darius Garland.

3 years left on his contrat at $42M per year.

An All-Star PG in his prime that can be too similar to the other All-Star perimeter player on his team...Donovan Mitchell.

Probably they feel that they can be better with Ty Jerome and Donovan Mitchell adding KD as their starting SF.

They have Struss too who can play SG. If KD is OK with Cleveland that would be a great trade for both teams IMO.

But even then, I fully expect us to target any of the free agent point guards like:
Malcolm Brogdon, DeAngelo Russell, Chris Paul, Dennis Schroder, Gary Payton 2nd, Delon Wright, Tre Jones, Kyle Lowry, Cam Payne, Dante Exum, Monte Morris, Delano Banton, etc.

And that's if we don't end up pulling one in a KD, Allen or O'neale trade??

haha... yes Ghost, I too can look up free agents. Question is, with what dough do you sign them... half the MLE (6mil) or Vet minimums? Not going to get Schroeder for that, DLo only comes on a personal favor, Brogdon has eye poked us already, we put CP out to pasture yrs ago, someone should do the same with Lowery. The rest are tremendously mediocre and no upgrade to TJones. Can't believe you even mentioned Morris.

We will run into the same problems as the past two yrs trying to fill a roster with minimum wagers and cast offs. We have seen this movie before.

If the whole off season relies on a decent KD trade we could be screwed.
" Houston, we have a problem." seems the Rockets hold the key. Can't be greedy.

The cruel reality is that we need to trade a SG in a League that is plenty of SGs. Not only that, because and exchange of SGs, as the KIngs, Bulls and Spurs did, is not an option, as our star player is another SG.

So, in addition to trading both KD and Beal, we need to find, preferably, a PG and a PF, although a SF could be welcomed too.

To make things more complicated, the Heat have two SGs of their own, with one being a very good player who can offer some creation (Herro). But it makes no sense to get Herro for Beal or KD when we have Booker, as explained.

Trading with the Wolves would mean getting probably Randle, who is a very particular player who needs a especial situation to flourish. But it could be a nice addition. McDaniels could also be a nice addition. Maybe this is the situation in which we could get more of what we really need.

Regarding our need of a point guard, we got Vasili Micic in the roster. He is a tall guy who sets the tempo of the game. He would never look to shoot himself before looking for options for his team mates. He is experienced, 32, has won the Euro League two years in a row and some teams in Europe are offering 5 million/year, which is like offering 60/70 million in the NBA. That is the maximum salary a player would have ever received from a team in Europe.

Micic has the authority and temper to be a leader and to decide how the team has to play, provided we have good scorers. If we go for a NCAA player, then we need time to develop him. Everybody will be too old when that happens. Micic and Gillespie could be a nice pair of guards. Maybe low profile, but supposedly we are going to have something like Booker, McDaniels, Randle, Richards, Dunn... or something like Booker, Jabari, Broorks, Richards, Dunn...

Beal doesn't have trade value and he is not worth adding a draft pick to trade him. About the best I can do is trade Beal and the 2027 FRP for Rozier and Robinson.

The Suns are stuck with Beal so either they keep him, waive him, buy him out or stretch/waive

Looks like Giannis is now open to being traded and unfortunately for us that makes the likelihood of a KD trade less likely because everyone is going to want a much younger Giannis.

We may have to accept the reality that we just won't get much value for KD but you kind of have to move off his contract because it's only a matter of time before he will be a shell of his former self.

But that's our current reality though. It's not like we'll somehow contend anyways barring a miracle outcome! We're still going to be "playin" fodder at best. I mentioned those free agents because the mechanisms to get them in free agency would be though one of the 3 possible situations we've postulated ad nauseam so far man.

1- A KD trade bringing back some expirings or smaller salaries in the deal pushing us under the 2nd apron.

2- Declining Micics' team option and buying out Martin's expiring would give us around 8+ million under the 2nd apron. Then trading Allen and/ or O'neale too for smaller contracts, expiring contracts, or just for cap space and a pick or 2nds back (cost controlled rookie scale players)??

3- Beal traded or magically agrees to a buyout somehow giving up significant money to help us make that move. Which would give us a bit more money to work with but not substantial with the dead money on our books for the next half decade or so,

UNLESS Ishbia really doesn't care about money (as he says) and just straight up pays him $ 110 million this summer to leave??? (He could do that but obviously won't)!!

But these are three mechanisms we could utilize to create cumulative additional cap space to sign some of those names mentioned. The selling point of playing here for the suns is ultimately on.our front office though. And another reason why I put more emphasis on the draft.

Because at least with the draft, if you acquire a pick in that desired players range, you don't have to bid against other teams contractually or sell that specific player on signing with us or elsewhere. After all, our track record at being able to lure and sign big name or key free agents as a desirable destination hasn't been at all inspiring or successful.

All of our options are pretty mediocre after dismantling our young, promising future core and frivolously giving away any asset not nailed down man.

But the reality is that we're really not close to contending anyways, and there WILL ABSOLUTELY be good trades for KD out there with the outcome of multiple teams bidding against one another soon.

The real question will be if the perception around Ishbias' inexperienced "buddy hire" will incentivize league GMs to aggressively try and fleece us as a result??

By the way, IF our front office is at all clever, I believe we'd be able to engineer a 3 team trade to possibly land a Morant, D Murray or J Holiday due to their respective situations?? As long as Ishbia himself, Bartlestein and Gregory aren't spearheading the operation as much, and maybe they defer to Matt Tellem, etc?

Sure! That's very true man. But there's still only one team out of many that can land him, and the rest of all those teams that miss out on Giannis can then become more desperate and bid amongst themselves for a KD secondary consolation prize.

That'll make those teams that do miss out more desperate to land something notable rather than selling their fanbase on a straight loss outcome I'd think.

In my opinion, the time to trade Durant was at the trade deadline. But because ownership was so focused on "Butler" -- they weren't prepared to pivot

I have always thought a good solid "B" trade from Kevin Pelton or Holliger for Durant would be a good trade value.
And also why I think its not realistic to build around Booker as they will get nothing from Beal - -if anything it will cost draft assets and Durant will be less than what many think "Oh my god its Kevin Effing Durant" should bring back. Hence, trade Booker too

Ishbia can create a buyout of Beal at say 95m out of the $110m -owed -- but the key with the 5 year stretch if Beal accepts a 30m pay cut is the lux tax benefits. From 53m to 16 - saves Ishbia a LOT of money. My guess, its like $125m or some outrageous each year. I think that THAT is why Ishbia wants to stretch for five years

As for O'neale and Allen - trade them for expirings and second round draft picks. Suns need to get below apron levels, get picks and start building better around bBooker

True! But then no team was really going to overpay for KD under the current conditions he's carrying. Still all those teams that have worked towards a big signing in Giannis, but miss out may choose to pivot to a consolation big name option in KD.

Or worst case scenario, if Morant gets traded, or the Celtics blow it up due to new ownership and 2nd apron issues. But even then, KD still represents two value options for teams, first us the value that for teams that came close to their goals but fell short, KD might be enticing as the needle mover that'd put them over.

And 2nd, for those teams wanting to remain faux competitive but really are targeting cap flexibility towards these next two free agency summers, KD still represents a massive 54 million expiring! ( also to a team like Boston) in a 3 team deal that could help them shed multi year 2nd apron cap commitments.

Or other teams just looking to pivot away from the 2nd apron, or even a team like OKC would actually be a perfect scenario for KD ( ** IF they fall short) as they could just run it back with more firepower next season, and then let KD expire, giving them more cap flexibility to accommodate their key core extensions and other contract increase signings rather than geing forced to boow up their core due to cost!

Dumping Hartenstein/ Caruso/ fillers/ picks on us for example is mutually ideal for both teams.

But getting the best overall package for KD is still possible given the reality that we weren't really close to contending and in that we now need so many various things. We should be able to recoup a fair amount of those needs just do to salary matching and other considerations. As long as our front office doesn't completely screw things up massively this summer?

I think the Suns will get good value for Durant. I just don't think it will be the Rockets where they get good young talent and multiple FRPs. MOre likely a large expiring, a younger player that is probably the potential to start and a FRP

This could also pave the entrance Of FredVV with a KD trade. Houston looks to be moving on from him. If that's the case, Id expect the Rockets to retain our '25 pick and take a PG like Traore... man he would be fun here as we need to turn this sedan into a sports car.

Used to be a strength ... not sure any team can match the PG history of PHNX. It was always a focus during former Illini PG JerryC's days, I thought may be that type of experience would be beneficial with Wishbia....but alas....

Goodrich
Buse
Westphal
DJ
Macy
Kidd
Marbury
Hornacek
KJ
Nash
Dragic
Rubio
Paul
............. missing anyone? That's a pretty impressive list.

Here is a PG that I would love to get in a KD trade...Darius Garland.

3 years left on his contrat at $42M per year.

An All-Star PG in his prime that can be too similar to the other All-Star perimeter player on his team...Donovan Mitchell.

If Garland is “too similar to the other All-Star perimeter player on his team” in Donovan Mitchell then why wouldn’t that be applicable to playing with Booker too?

Unless you’re saying this is for a trade for the post-Booker era but sounds like teams don’t even want Booker.

Gambos post above is how the Rockets are not open to trading for Booker anymore as a cover because Booker is not available

I also wonder how much value Booker lost this year with how he played. I think he could get a nice return but evena team like the Pistons, they might want to be patient and not overpay for Booker.

Return to Phoenix Suns
