I said this a few days ago and I mean it - I am not despairing. The chance that the top 1 or 2 picks in this draft will lead any team to a championship is small. How many overall number 1 picks in the last 20 drafts were the best or second best players on a championship team? At most, 3, but more like 2 (Kyrie, Anthony Davis, maaaybe Wiggins, who was 2nd in PPG in the 2022 finals for GS). Number 2 picks are even worse - Durant is the whole list. Oh, and Kyrie was the only one who did it with the team that drafted him.
All things being equal, I'd rather win the lottery. But there is always talent. The best scouts and number crunchers in the world get it wrong every single year and miss allstars and all-NBA players. I'm not saying our scouts and number crunchers are better than everyone else's. I'm just saying they are all guessing to a degree, other than the true generational talents that come around every 10 years.
Wouldn't surprise me one bit if the best player to come out of this draft is taken after we pick. Or is Queen or Maluach or Frears or Bailey or who knows.
We are doing the right thing. Get as many good picks as you can. Draft as well as you can. Develop as well as you can. Don't take shortcuts.
