So as a big JT fan who spends way too much time reading people's nasty internet comments, at least JT going out on a huge game seems to have prevented what would have been a summer of people saying he sucks and made us lose.

I am personally not putting much stock in comparison to players with achilles injuries in the past. First off medicine and surgery and etc improves constantly and he'll be getting better treatment than the past players. 2nd he's younger than most players with this injury and in top-tier physical condition. 3rd he's got an insane work ethic. A guy like Cousins or John Wall probably thought oh well I had my fun and made a bazillion dollars and that's that. JT will spend every second of his life on rehab and coming back stronger. 4th we don't know the severity of the tear, which makes a difference from case to case. And the Globe says there were no complications with his surgery or additional issues found.

The Celtics said there is no timetable for return but he's expected to make a full recovery. So I'm expecting him to make a full recovery.

I'm expecting a full year's speculation as to whether he'll make it back for the '26 playoffs.

I keep thinking back to the way that the league had been calling games this year, seemingly allowing the “aggressive“ type of play, and possibly not doing much to rein it in. Then I looked back at the play which first brought up an injury concern for someone who has seemed pretty consistently healthy in the playoffs:

Looking at the way he had to land just to keep from breaking his neck, who knows how that might’ve contributed as a precursor. Maybe his being a Celtic and not having the name LeBron contributed to why I don’t remember much conversation pointing out the recklessness of not disciplining such things appropriately? And now here things are.

Puts a dent in the path to getting into Bird territory.
But Kobe came back from a ruptured Achilles.
Assuming that’s what this is, Jayson will too.

Kobe came back from the Achilles to shoot 37% and 35% in consecutive seasons. That wasn't the Kobe Bryant I remember. Not sure what you're talking about. If there's an example of someone coming back successfully after this injury, it isn't Kobe.

Look RIP to the Mamba, but he and *most* of his fans were never about FG%:)
Kobe is JT's idol and he came back from it. That's as far as that analysis goes.
Simple motivation. It'll take a lot of it to keep doing each step of rehab for the next many months.

I'm just not sure I'm following the line of reasoning. If Tatum comes back to shoot 20%fg, is that him "coming back"?

I'm not sure i see the motivation he can take from Kobe's situation because the latter was a shell of himself when he came back. He *didnt* successfully come back, by any sense of the imagination.

He got surgery yesterday, immediately after the diagnosis of a torn achilles. The Globe says there were no complications or other issues found, which can often be the case with that injury apparently. The Celtics say there is no current timetable for return but he's expected to make a full recovery. That's all we know I think.

Kobe came back to drop 60 in his last game and literally drop the mic. That's what fanboys like Tatum remember.
They likely DO NOT remember that Kobe went out with a prolonged whimper and that those Lakers teams were awful. As a Celtics fan, I remember those factors fondly. As a Laker's fan, if you want to hang around this thread more saying you don't understand things I'm saying, have at it I guess, definitely what this thread is here for.

Sounds good on paper, but I doubt he comes back in January or February.

I wouldn’t expect to see him until October 2026

Seems at least plausible he could be back by next year's playoffs. Although we might be trying to duck the playoffs next year.

Yep no need to rush. Don't mind seeing him on the floor until the 2026-2027 season. Or at the end of 2025-2026 season just to get his feet wet.
