OK just wrote a script to calculate this based on basketball reference. Looks like the 99'-12' intersection has only 32 guys, sounds a little borderline for a whole category.

Those guys are:
Spoiler:

Code: Select all

Players who played in both 1998-99 and 2011-12 seasons:
==================================================
1. Al Harrington
2. Antawn Jamison
3. Anthony Parker
4. Ben Wallace
5. Brad Miller
6. Brian Skinner
7. Chauncey Billups
8. Derek Fisher
9. Dirk Nowitzki
10. Earl Boykins
11. Erick Dampier
12. Grant Hill
13. Jason Kidd
14. Jermaine O'Neal
15. Jerry Stackhouse
16. Juwan Howard
17. Kevin Garnett
18. Kobe Bryant
19. Kurt Thomas
20. Larry Hughes
21. Marcus Camby
22. Mike Bibby
23. Mikki Moore
24. Nazr Mohammed
25. Paul Pierce
26. Rashard Lewis
27. Ray Allen
28. Steve Nash
29. Tim Duncan
30. Tony Battie
31. Tracy McGrady
32. Vince Carter

Total players in both seasons: 32
Total players in 1998-99: 440
Total players in 2011-12: 478

You don't think 32 players is enough for a category? I see a lot of guys regularly taken in these. Some also occur in other categories but there would be a premium on this category.

I'm sure another category could be used. Could simply have a category for players who have retired within the last x number of years, or players who have played in at least 3 different decades. There's a wealth of alternatives. Just takes a little imagination.

Might still work honestly but might as well be tight. Kobe Billups Hill Dirk Kidd Duncan Vince Ben also work for other categories. I like the top end talent this category brings with guys like prime Garnett Pierce Allen, but yeah maybe should switch it up.

How about seasons where Pop won a championship? Or players who played for Pop in the playoffs or finals and their opponents?

Wilt
Kareem
Jordan
LeBron
Garnett
Kawhi
Shaq
Erving
Paul
KD
Luka
Harden
Barkley
Butler
George

After the Pop draft - declare the season when drafting a player and that season is then closed? We could allow duplicate seasons for very low fga, end of the bench players (3-5 fga).

Lowest Odds to Win the Lottery: Cavs Magic Bulls Mavs Hawks Nets

1. **2014 Cavs** – 1.4% → Wiggins
2. **1993 Magic** – 1.52% → Webber (traded for Penny)
3. **2008 Bulls** – 1.7% → Rose
4. **2025 Mavs** – 1.8% → Likely Flagg
5. **2011 Cavs (via LAC)** – 2.8% → Kyrie
6. **2024 Hawks** – 3.0% → Risacher
7. **2000 Nets** – 4.4% → Kenyon Martin

Not a huge pool, with many of those franchises being pretty young or non established historically but I think it has enough and can be a fun shallower pool

What do you guys think about this pool? Can be fun but is it deep enough?

LeBron MJ Shaq Dwight McGrady Pippen Butler Rose Dirk Luka Kyrie Mitchell Gilmore Penny Dominique Kidd Erving Barry Durant Vince Petrovic Harden

Sounds reasonable to me

We’ve already done a Doc Rivers draft, that’s kind of the same thing, right?

I do like the idea.

Clippers and Nuggets would be spread a bit thin but that’s okay.

Edit: Should probably wait to make sure we don't have to add Celtics/Knicks to this list? My gut says the Knicks pull that one out but who knows.

Some more ideas:
Lottery picks-only draft. Only players taken in the lottery are eligible.
2025 Lottery teams: Only players from seasons where they played for a team that finished in the lottery in 2025 are eligible
#1 Overall Teams: Only players from teams that picked #1 in the last 20 drafts are eligible.
NHL Cities: Only players from teams in cities with a current NHL team are eligible
21st Century Finals Teams: Only players from teams that played in the NBA finals since 2000 are eligible
No Finals, No #1 Overall: Only players from teams that haven't played in the NBA finals or picked #1 overall in the past 20 seasons are eligible.

Several good ideas here, 25' Lottery stood out for me

Farewell draft. You can only draft a player in his final season with a team. If he is still with that team in 2025, he is not eligible to be drafted for the 2025 season.

Conference Finals 25' Draft

Any player who ever played for Indy Minny OKC/Seattle Knicks

Durant SGA Garnett George Edwards Paul Ewing Reggie Allen Butler Frazier Towns Reed Brunson...

I think there are enough alpha guys are are more or less the same level, and overall adequate depth

Since lottery just happened, how about a lottery franchise based draft? Say top 10 picks.

Dallas
Spurs
76ers
Hornets
Jazz
Wizards
Pelicans
Nets
Raptors
Rockets

Lots of Alpha players as well as role players.

Each player drafted must be a season for the team listed above.

Yeah kdawg32086 also suggested it above, with the whole lottery. I like both, but prefer the tighter pool

Could tighten the time frame? It's a little different in that current players are less prominent and another way to alter/eliminate guys in a way I don't think we have.

How so? It wipes out a lot of prime seasons for players who spent most or all of their careers with one franchise. Without digging deeper, I was wondering if it was deep enough.

Yeah there are so many players that are basically out of this as major stars-

Dirk, Robinson, Duncan, Kobe, Reggie, Magic, Bird, Hakeem, others I can't think of right now- basically everyone who didn't move teams during their prime.

Not to mention it removes all current players who have not (yet) moved during their prime- so no Jokic, SGA (unless you want the Clippers version), Giannis, Curry, etc.

I think by default any draft that doesn't really exclude players but only enables to draft them under different conditions is going to be loaded.

In the pool of players who switched teams mid prime is not that small.

Trying to break it done, thinking about it quickly here you got for example prime versions of LBJ MJ Garnett Kawhi Shaq Durant Harden Luka Barkley Nash Butler McGrady Paul George Davis, among others. This list makes it sound ok but should test it further.

BTW is Kawhi eligible for the Spurs? Is Luka eligible for 24' or 25'?
