Spurs' No. 2 Draft Pick Emerges As Key X-Factor In Giannis Antetokounmpo Trade

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Fri May 16, 2025 4:18 pm

The San Antonio Spurs moving up to the No. 2 pick could transform the possibility of a Giannis Antetokounmpo trade destination. San Antonio already had a surplus of future draft capital they could use in a trade, but the assured high value of a No. 2 pick certainly further improves their chances.

Dylan Harper is the consensus second best player in the draft, but his positional overlap with De'Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle could lead them to trade down for a player that is a better fit while accruing additional assets. The Spurs traded out of No. 8 at last year's draft with the Minnesota Timberwolves for a 2031 unprotected first rounder and a top-1 pick swap in 2030. Rob Dillingham could have been an intriguing pick for the Spurs, but the optionality of those future picks are certainly far more valuable to them now, especially with their anticipated backcourt crunch if they do keep Harper.

"The focus now in the Giannis situation is the No. 2 pick, which was gotten by the San Antonio Spurs," said Brian Windhorst on Friday's Get Up. "Do the Spurs look to make a package offer for Giannis? Or do they look to move it to another team in this draft? There's a lot of interest in the No. 2 pick in this draft. This will be where the draft is really decided. Giannis will have a play in that as well."

Many rival executives expect the Spurs to eventually keep the selection to pick Harper.

The Spurs would be fools to not try to trade that for Giannis.

As a Spurs fan I’d love to see them keep their flexibility both from salary perspective and future assets.

Harper has a chance to be a really special player and I think the redundancy of a back court of Fox, Castle, and Harper is way overstated.

Fox gives you a chance to be competitive now while Castle and Harper mature but still add value to the rotation.

Having a core of Castle, Harper, and Wemby all on the same timeline along with future draft assets sets you up for a decade.

Selling the farm for a 3-5 year window of Fox Wemby and Giannis could be amazing, but these playoffs would suggest that depth matters. I’m afraid that it will take too much current talent to match salaries and future assets to get a deal done.

Would hate to end up like the Suns in 3-5 years with 3 big names on big salaries that failed to make the playoffs and no assets left to reset the roster around Wemby when he is just hitting his prime.

If you can get Giannis by giving up the #2 pick, they should do it with no hesitation! We are talking about one of the top 3 players in the NBA.

But Milwaukee would be foolish to take it. I think it would take #2 plus another one or two 1st round picks plus a couple of young players to get Giannis.

I agree that Giannis for #2 straight up would be dumb to pass on but there is no way that’s the package.

Players of his caliber have historically required multiple firsts plus matching salary in the way of young talent.

I’m assuming they would want #2, the Atlanta pick this year and in 2027 that the spurs own, maybe one of the swaps the Spurs have rights to. Plus Castle, Vassell, and Barnes to make the money work if not more.

That’s in the ball park of the type of deal the Nets got for Bridges and other teams have received for moving guys like Harden, KD, etc.

Giannis is a better player than any of those and is seemingly too loyal of a guy to fully force his way out.

The only exception to that kind of haul was Luca D. and unfortunately for the Spurs, Nico isn’t the GM of the Bucks.
