Kobe’s unsuccessful trade demand from the Lakers is some history worth considering here too.

James did fine in Miami, but he also wanted no part of, “Yeah, but Jordan won six titles.’ Free agents won’t say it; but they’re scared of the past.

Bring it on, Kobe demanded.

So the teams did start talking trade.

There really was no chance since Buss wasn’t giving up his premier attraction. Basketball was nice; stars were better. But Jackson appealed to Buss. Jackson said they owed Bryant at least to listen, to at least demonstrate to Bryant they respected him and what he did for the franchise. They weren’t trading him, but they didn’t have to tell him that. OK, go ahead, Buss said.

The Bulls couldn’t believe this. Kobe Bryant wants to play for us?

So they went along.

The Bulls had started to come along well and were a Scott Skiles best 49-33 that season and swept the defending champion Heat and Shaq in the first round. Kobe loved that.

The best the Bulls had were Luol Deng, Ben Gordon, Kirk Hinrich, Ben Wallace and Tyrus Thomas.

An aside: That team won 49 games? And Skiles wasn’t Coach of the Year?

The Bulls liked their guys, but they knew they’d gone about as far as they could. Actually, it wouldn’t last much longer as Skiles would be fired that December, the Bulls would plummet to 33 wins and then get lucky in the lottery and get Derrick Rose. Imagine Kobe in that 33-win season.

Anyway, that was the point. If the Bulls gave up too much the Bulls would have less talent than the Lakers’ team Kobe wanted to leave because they weren’t good enough. But try convincing Kobe. He felt Jordan didn’t win with much.

So proposals were exchanged. The Lakers were somewhat on the periphery as Kobe’s agent kept coming up with suggestions for the Bulls. The Bulls would send Deng, Gordon, Wallace. No, the Lakers didn’t want Wallace; Kobe wanted Deng to stay. Then the Lakers said they wanted Ron Artest, who had become an All-Star, all-NBA and Defensive Player of the Year in Sacramento, and Hinrich. The Kings saw what the Bulls had seen earlier and knew Artest was ready to blow again. They wanted first round picks, including the one that would become Rose. The Bulls didn’t have enough firsts. And so it went amidst media hysterics for a while and some national reports that the deal was done, that Kobe never would play again for the Lakers.

Eventually, Kobe calmed down and started the season, and a few months later the Lakers acquired Pau Gasol and were on the way.

He has the organization’s backing. Jon is not going to just try to be on good terms with Giannis—he’s trying to do right by the Bucks. And that means that if every scenario in play leaves the other team so gutted that Giannis might not actually be in that much better of a situation, then maybe that’s where he looks at the room and says, “All right, let me stay put.”

Next best thing to Giannis shutting down the trade rumors by definitively saying he’s staying.

Strategically, it's a good idea to make teams think they can trade for him.

As they're busy figuring all that out, we can work on our signings/other actual trades.

True, but we had that generational superstar on the roster this year. He was healthy for the playoffs. And we got sent home in a first round exit.

To be clear, I'm not blaming Giannis for that. But apparently, we're planning to roll on with Horst and Doc, the same dudes who led us to the point we currently are in, but now with Dame injured. If we had a new FO or HC coming through, I'd be more optimistic. But we don't. What makes you think that they'll turn it around? Horst will need nail this offseason and Doc will have to be, well, something he hasn't been (a good coach). Do you believe that can happen?

Yes I do. I think Doc may be fired next season after a slow start. Maybe even this summer if Giannis is on board with it (probably not though).

Yes, we had Giannis this season and we lost in the first round. The team wasn’t good enough, I agree. But I think it can be improved enough in the next two seasons so that we get back into contention again. A lot of fluctuation will happen in the coming two off seasons as the second apron starts affecting other teams. Teams like Boston and Cleveland with major injuries and potential playoff disappointment will look to offload some of their good role players to avoid the second apron tax. Might happen to OKC too. We will be in a good position next offseason to make some deals.

Exactly. Why is no one seeing this? Our position is not that much worse than other East contenders.

Doc will likely be fired mid-season. Prunty does a competent job. AJ Green develops. Dame returns to become a microwave scorer in the playoffs, and his expiring (and new picks) are traded the following year for Jaylen Brown (who will be unhappy) or some other disgruntled player (there's at least one a year).

There are no takebacks if Giannis is traded. It would be malpractice to not pull every lever possible to make it work with him.

agree. more importantly giannis must agree tho

Haynes twice said Giannis wants to be on a team where he can win another title

I believe Haynes is one of the guys we can trust here but surprised the talk hasn't happened yet.

"Bucks make contact with Giannis" makes it sounds as if they haven't been able to get ahold of him. It's only been 2+ weeks since the season ended. Giannis (and every player on every team who gets eliminated) takes a break/vacation after 7 months of nothing but basketball.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Haynes definitely made it seem like the Bucks better do their due diligence to convince Giannis there’s a long term plan in place that keeps him playing for titles. I think we know what the big sell is in the short term we may take a potential step back to jump forward in the future but he may not want to hear that. Hopefully he takes that as a challenge to stay and overachieve rather than a warning sign the ship is sinking and he wants off.

If the team says they’ll only trade him if he wants out and it’s just so hard to believe that he’ll turn his back on the franchise at a potential down year after a 6/7yr run I just don’t see how it plays out any other way than he commits to the franchise this week.

I still don't think he asks out. Maybe there will be some kind of mutual understanding where he wishes he could stay and compete, but we've exhausted all assets to make that possible next season. Who knows. I believe he wants any reason to spite the Big NBA Media machine for putting words in his mouth, though.

Tell him you're bringing back Bobby, KPJ, Trent, Sims and show him the numbers playing with those guys. Show him we can be ultra aggressive next summer. Have Culver's cater the meeting.

Yeah, my fear is that he wants us to be trying to win at all times and "gap year" will sound like we aren't trying.

It is what it is. If the basketball is the most important part of the decision, we're screwed. We simply are not close to the best basketball situation anymore.

Giannis believed in Adrian Griffin and Doc Rivers, he can be sold on this team still having a chance.
