Re: 2025 NBA Draft Discussion Part 7
Again, no need to overcomplicate it. If you're gonna go the (to take a classic old Simmons term) Tremendous Upside Potential route at 9, why wouldn't you just go with the guy in Bryant who will be a plus defender with a ready made jumper who has solid athleticism/good measureables and has shown he can be a decent passer? We saw his value at Arizona and how he lifted them despite not getting as much run as he probably should've got and he passes the eye/numbers tests. Is he an on-ball creation monster? Probably not, but if he was he probably wouldn't be available at 9. But we don't need him to be that either when there on-ball creators already on this team and you also never know how guys might develop. It's not out of the question considering his tools and relative age. But what's there is the bones of a very good two-way player who fits a defined complementary role at the next level and fits what Masai was talking about in terms of what he was looking for in this draft.
Don't we consistently see in the playoffs how those are the guys you can't play off the floor? Mikael Bridges fits this and went for five FRPs lol.
And compare, for example, with Essengue, and I think people overindex on how athletes/prospects look in transition because it's exciting/flashy and fail to acknowledge how they'll look in half-court settings and that's when things fall apart with him a bit. If they're gonna ultimately similar roles as off-ball corner winģs, take the guy with a better shot.

Re: 2025 NBA Draft Discussion Part 7
This guys shot making ability is pretty lethal....I been doing some more research and i seen he had one of the best shot creation percentages in the entire class....Which peaks my interest alot more than a stand still corner 3 point shooter who can play defense but not elite....Jase is no slouch on the defensive end as well....Hes actually a + positive defender....
People will knock his size....Hes the exact same size as Brunson (Who is leading a team to the ECF)....But also has a 38 inch vertical Jump, is quicker than Brunson off the dribble, And shows potential that he can be just as good self creation scorer as Brunson....Jase maybe shorter than expected but he does not play the game of basketball like a small player as he has the athletic ability, Speed to either blow by any big on him and he can finish in traffic because he can jump out the gym....
If you are not sold on IQ as the PG of the future for this team (Im not sold) I will take the bet on Jase over another meh offensive wing player with good but not elite defensive ability....
At least Jase looks to have something this team has been lacking for a very long time and thats a dynamic scoring guard upside in the likes of Jamal Murray/Brunson....If we go off board at 9 Jase is my pick....Bryant is interesting as well but he will never have the handle Jase has, and he will never have the self shot creation ability Jase has...He will just be a fast break, Corner 3 pt shooter imo...And the guy with shot creation upside almost always becomes the better player...Its like asking whos the better player on the Knicks Brunson or OG....As good as OG is Brunson is the player on that team that makes the team as good as it is....Without Brunson the team is a fringe playoff team...
Ofc you would have to develop Jase as a primary PG...He played Combo guard and he has the handle to easily play more of the PG role...In high school he was a PG and had 15Pts, 4 AST, 4 reb, 2 steals and 0.6 Blks per game...So that shows hes capable at being a PG and a high producing two way one at that...Imagine Brunson that can get above the rim like a SG/SF thats what Richardsons upside is...

Lol mad late on Jase. We've been beating the drum for him since January onward when Izzo gave him a bigger role during conference play and became the defacto leader as a frosh. He's just a smart player. I wouldn't take him at 9 over Bryant as his size does limit his versatility, but he's a good player. Orlando should be all over him.

Size only would limit you if you have no bounce, no athletic abilty like a FVV....Jase has all class athletic ability for his height....If you watch Jase in the gym he can throw down 360 windmill dunks with ease....The guy is not just some small guy who will get blocked by everyone...His explosive ability makes his size irrelevant to me when he has such an athletic advantage on majority of players....
Bryant may have height but hes in no way elite sized either for his position....6'6" without shoes so hes just 6'7"....What exactly does Carter Bryant do better than Jase?....Jase is actually a better attacker and rim finisher than Bryant believe it or not....Jase can attack the rim and finish in a verity of ways where as Bryant struggles to get by defenders to attack the rim on a reg basis...Bryant does not shoot better than Jase and Jase is leaps and bounds the Ball handler/Shot creator/shot maker Bryant is....Imo its not even really close who the better player of the 2 is...
If you are banking on size...Where also Bryant is not some 6'9" guy...Sometimes banking on size alone to suggest one is the better player does not work out....Jase has much better basketball skills....And like i said Jase is a + Defender so its not like Bryant is worlds ahead of him on that end of the floor....Also rebounding...Jase is an exceptional rebounder for his size...Jase gets to the FT line almost triple the amount of times than Bryant so that leads to more points on the board...59 FT attempts to 122 FT attemps for Jase....For a guy way bigger than Jase wouldn't you expect him to be more aggressive to get to the Line?....Like i said its not that close when you look deeper...Jase also has way more upside as a play maker where Bryant won't make anyone around him better because he is not a passer...
Bryant is very limited to a 3 & D role where as Jase has 3 & D role just as good as Bryant but also has elite level iso scorer/3 level scoring playmaker upside as well and thats why Jase is the higher level prospect...

I wonder who is going to freefall this year after the workout/wingspan warriors rise up draft boards. Maybe Fears?

Re: 2025 NBA Draft Discussion Part 7
I think this draft is going to have some very surprising risers.
Miles Byrd is a guy who I think teams are going to love. Prototyping 3+D wing. He can defend and shoot, he's athletic, and he's got some underrated handles and playmaking abilities.
Efficiency was an issue, but he took a ton of shots off the dribble. I think in a more structured environment he is going to absolutely thrive. I see a ton of Mikal Bridges in his game, but I see more playmaking potential.

That’s interesting. I’d think of him as more of a safe pick than having tremendous upside potential.

Doubt it. He has an uncertain visa situation. The prospect of leaving the USA probably scares him cause theres a chance he may not be able to get back in……I am sure over time they can work something out but it could take some time.

2025 Yang highlights..f*** it, take him with 9. Some Hawk fans want him with 13 and Joe Tsai is gonna draft him with one of the Net's picks.
Gotta admit, he looks like a faster more fluid Yak who could also shoot a 3. Re-signing Yak and having Yang work with him the next 3-4 years would be a nice. And Chomche churning along slowly learning from both, and our outcome for our C position would be set for the next decade+

I mentioned before that if you go to tankathon and look at each guy and how they grade out on everything, Jase has the best underlying numbers behind only Flagg. His only negative was rebounding...not surprising given his height.
You mention IQ...if Jase was drafted by the Raps we would have the ability of playing them together too since both can play offball and supply shooting...that an RJ doesn't.
I like Jase and think he will be good...I just don't see Masai going guard. But who knows.

Not that I see our FO doing it but if Maluach is off the board, part of me would love to see them do this lol just to see/read the reactions both from the media and fan base
Personally I loved Yang last year but went cool on him because someone in here was saying he was looking slower etc. But if he’s able to move well enough to not be run off the court then as crazy as it may sound they really should look deeper into him and even consider it because he could be a massive steal for someone and if you’re right about him you look like a genius lol

If he's there, I would be shocked if Masai does not draft Maluach.
I would be shocked if Ujiri draft Maluach, and I would be more shock if Maluach becomes a good 3 point shooter, as most people project him to be average in the low 30s. Kalkbrenner has been the better shooter with similar defense.
I very much doubt Kalkbrenner will be able to guard in space in the NBA, which is why he is projected much lower than Maluach. Another reason being that he's turning 24 (!) midway through his rookie season. He better be a better shooter than an 18 year old considering the age difference.
Kalkbrenner has the same lane agility than Maluach (they are both bottom 2 with Queen behind), while only 2 inch short on his standing reach and less than an inch short on wingspan.
As for shooting, Maluach isn't shooting well with very low volume, it is all potential, lol. Check the stats.

As for #9 - this might sound crazy but the more I look into it, the more I'm thinking we should be taking Cedric Coward.
I know that seems high and he's only played 6 games this season but even his prior numbers are very, very good. He has amazing shooting numbers, very good rebounder, solid passer, good defender and phenomenal measurements at the combine.
Since I don't believe there are any stars available at #9 (barring someone falling to us), taking the next best thing seems to be the right thing to do. I think he has a chance to be a very, very good player and if we don't take him here, there won't be another chance to grab him later.
Can't seem him making it past #15.
i understand the sentiment of not drafting a center with a lotto pick but it really is pretty tough getting a good center. indy was rumored to trade turner for years but never did because they didn't get what they wanted. folks here were up in arms that we could've had edey if we didnt trade for yak, which cost 2 first rounders.
if there is a center that you can see being your guy for 25-30 mins a night for a good 8+ years then it's very tempting. at number 9 there are many possible picks...look at how many different opinions there are here so trying to find a non center that can break out into a star is a gamble too.
if the realistic returns long term for the 9th pick is a starter/rotation guy for 30 mins and not a superstar then taking a center is not a waste at all.
but i trust masai in whomever he takes.

Yeah well we do have Barnes/Ingram/RJ/Mogbo/Dick/Ochai/Walter all trying to get minutes at the Wing/Guard Spots...If we get a Noa/Bryant type (I don't think either can play PF cause they are too small imo, Noa is too skinny) Maybe you can go Fleming to be a Backup PF/C....But the way i see it Jase is a ball handling guard who can either be a PG or a SG....We have Shaed but lets be real Shaed is a backup always....If you add Jase i honestly believe he could be a franchise PG....He has all the tools imo... I think people harp too much on size and measurments around here than basketball skills....But i trust Masai to ge the best player....But i won't be shocked if Jase gets some consideration...

Re: 2025 NBA Draft Discussion Part 7
I'm happy to see Jase Richardson getting some love. He's been one of my favourites for awhile now, and I'd be thrilled if we drafted him.
The main issue that's affecting Richardson's draft stock is that he's currently a PG sized SG. However, on a team with plenty of ball handling and passing at other positions (like our team), who cares. You can just line him up at PG for defensive purposes, and have everybody share the ball on offense. If his PG skills develop over time, you could easily end up with one of the best players in the draft. If his PG skills don't develop, you still end up with a useful combo guard who can score.
The Raptors like to draft players with plus size for their position, but they also like to draft players who are good analytically. Jase Richardson, as someone mentioned above, has the second best BPM of any Freshman in the draft (behind only Flagg). He is good, analytically, at both offense and defense. His only statistical weaknesses are rebounding (which makes sense given his size) and usage rate (which was due to the team he was on). His shooting, assist to turnover rate, and ability to get to the line are all very impressive.
Another point in Richardson's favor is his age. He's an October 2006 birthday, the same as Jeremiah Fears, which makes him one of the youngest players in the draft. He also is a very good athlete, and has the same standing reach and wingspan as Fears despite being shorter (Jase's wingspan is actually slightly longer). Jase is also an impressive leaper, and is is great at finishing around the rim.
If we draft any guard, we'd likely want to trade one of our existing guards for a backup big (probably Dick or Agbaji). I don't see this as a reason to not take a guard, though. I don't know if Jase will end up being BPA at 9, but he should be on our shortlist and hopefully we're taking a very close look at him.

I mean, that's why you draft an 18 year old over a 23 year old. Potential.

A 6'6-6'7 wing that doesn't shoot is who people want to take with the #9 pick? Even with Barnes and Mogbo on the roster?
Am I in the twilight zone?
You don't look at Mogbo in this situation.
You look at CMB and say can he improve his shooting enough to be a 2-way beast.
If anything you use Mogbo as his draft comp. Physically very similar, and college production very similar.
They key factor would be tha CMB is 2.5 years younger draft age. So his room for development is theoretically vastly higher.
Right now CMB doesn't have the shooting, but everything he's good at. If he could shoot the corner three he'd be incredibly valuable.
I think he needs to be in the draft conversation the same way Queen, Demon and Yak should be talked about. Can you get their weakness upgraded enough to go with their unique skills.
He also has no dribble package or blow by ability. He projects to be a slightly worse Rondae Hollis jefferson

Worth noting that RHJ scored at a much worse rate in his draft year than CMB, and CMB's 2PT% is like 90 points higher. I would argue that CMB was better as a freshman than RHJ was as a sophomore. NBA spacing might render CMB unimportant, but if we're just going with quality of prospect he's already well ahead of Rondae.

Well he was really only a combo guard in college prolly because the coach there thought that would be best spot to put him cause of his great shot creation skills and hes also pretty great at coming off down screens and scoring at a high clip....But ....His whole life he was a PG.....In Grade school he was a PG and In High school he was a PG....He avrgd 15/4/4 As a High school PG...So that position is not something new for him....So i am sure he will adjust in the NBA because a team will want him to be a PG ideally....
And tbh we need another PG....I like Shaed but Shaed is not a real floor general...Hes more of a hustle playing PG....We need a dynamic ball handler who can create his own shot imo...And if you go look at some of Jase playmaking highlights he looks like someone who could be a pretty good passer...
