Some point you just gotta credit Indy for doing this, they just keep finding ways.
KC: Do you still think you're a championship-caliber team?
Gar: I never said that and correct me if I'm wrong.
KC: You were asked that question at the news conference announcing Thibodeau's dismissal and you answered yes

Especially when at the time we had a clear need a point guard. Gar would have drafted Haliburton.

He absolutely would have, and it would have been the right move, but we would have killed him here on draft night. Well, most of us anyways lol.

Not sure that GarPax would have made the right move to pick Hali, as after Butler their draft record collapsed, except for Lauri at #7 and Portis, who was a good #22 pick.

At any rate, about the game. First, I am surprised how teams at every level struggle to inbound the ball under pressure. Duke lost to Houston the same way that the Knicks did to Indy -- turnovers on inbound plays plus missed FTs. Second, the announcers fully agreed with Thibs' strategy to turn the game into a FT contest, but I would NEVER do that. Make the opposition eat up the clock and take a shot under high pressure. Hell, maybe you will even steal the ball back from them. Doing those quick hacks extends the game, which is what the team that trails very much wants.

Thibs has been highly praised this post-season, in large part of for the two huge comeback wins against the Celts, so it's only fair that he have some of that praise removed after last night.

The Hali shot is getting all the highlights, but when did Aaron Nesmith turn into Klay Thompson??

The TNT crew always talks about "the others" needing to step up. What random guy will you get a random hot night from that helps propel your team to victory.

This Nesmith game was like Buddy Hield in round 1.

And Haliburton was only open to being drafted by a few teams which is why he went so low, he refused workouts, interviews, and medicals to most teams. Chicago was one of his targeted teams! (Along with NY).

https://chicago.suntimes.com/sports-saturday/2020/11/14/21562809/bulls-tyrese-haliburton-nba-draft-iowa-state
“I think I fit well in Chicago,” Haliburton said on a teleconference call earlier this week, with the NBA Draft coming up next Wednesday. “Obviously, with two guards in Coby [White] and Zach [LaVine] who can score at a high level, I think I can come in right away and be somebody who can take the burden off them and facilitate. But also, with them wanting the ball in their hands at the same time, I can be a guy that plays off the ball and knocks down shots. So whatever is needed in Chicago — or any organization, for that matter — I’m ready to do.”

Not only did the guy serve himself up on a platter for us, he actually stopped workouts/interviews with other teams to make sure he got to us (or NY). The one time an all-star actually picks Chicago, we of course draft Patrick instead.

Gar would have drafted Haliburton.

Well yeah, he's from Iowa. It's pretty much a 1000% Gar pick. And he was the most successful college player at #4, multiple Big 12 player and All Big 12 team, so definitely a Paxson type.

I remember from our draft thread most of the board wanted Haliburton or Deni, assuming the top 3 was Ant/Wiseman/Melo as expected.
A lot of the talk was about Melo/Wiseman, but both were off the board.

September: 7% of 164 posters wanted Haliburton.

November: 13% of 112 posters wanted Haliburton.

A lot of the Haliburton stuff is hindsight gymnastics. A very small percentage of people wanted him and viewed him as too safe and low upside as a typical Paxson pick.

He had more love than Williams though.

It's all very reasonable though given what we knew at the time. Haliburton just wasn't a superstar mold, even though he offered strong two-way ability.

Yeah , I don’t get it either. Especially not Indiana. They are the best shooting team in the league.

Really inexcusable loss, but I smelled it coming with 2 minutes left. Indiana’s crazy once they get going. Perhaps the most blitzkrieg 3P offense since the championship Nuggets (when they had a proper 8-man rotation of star shooters and 3D role-players).

If that game doesn't convince skeptics that the 3-point genie is out of the bottle, nothing will. You can't defend how Indy shot in the last few minutes. You could have Mike, Scottie, Harp, the Glove, and Dumars on the court and those shots will still get off. All you can do is hope they don't fall. That's not how basketball used to be, but this generation has learned how to shoot from 30 feet on the fly. I mean, those shots don't always go in, see Boston's series, but when they do ... defense doesn't matter.

The NBA has never been as much of a make or miss league as it is now. Everyone has a chance in a playoff series if you have the shooting talent and your shots are falling.

The Pacers are getting hot again for the second postseason in a row.

I predict the Timberwolves tie it up tonight. Don't see all three of Reid, Dante, and NAW having bad shooting nights again.
