Most Logical Jrue Holiday Trade? (Miami)
Boston receives: Duncan Robinson (19m expiring)
Miami receive: Jrue Holiday, Boston's '25 & '26 1st rd picks
Why for Boston? They shed $13m in salary this yr due to Miami's $16m exception, getting them over halfway to being under the 2nd apron. Also get off Jrue's ugly back end $.
Why for Miami? Get a standout defensive guard next to Herro, while netting a couple decent draft assets.

Re: Most Logical Jrue Holiday Trade? (Miami)
Exceptions can't be combined with player salary.
The deal for Miami is likely a 3-teamer.
Rozier+pick(s) to Atlanta
Jrue to Miami
Robinson to Boston

Re: Most Logical Jrue Holiday Trade? (Miami)
I hate to generalize, but it seems a good chunk of MIL fans can’t see the value Jrue still has on the court actually playing basketball, but only focus on the contract. I don’t know if that’s due to the way the Dame/Jrue swap unfolded so poorly, or just not watching since th trade. But, dude is still elite defensively and isn’t asked to do much offensively on BOS. Whoever trades for him is getting an awesome player next year, and probably yhe following one as well. Maybe the 3rd year he falls off too much, but that’s the way it works sometimes,
So, call this a no /not redeemable from BOS end.

DEal doesn't work as is from a CBA standpoint. But that's an easy enough fix. Don't see Boston giving up an unprotected pick to swap Jrue for Robinson. That part is harder.

I think the Celtics will be able to find a deal where they don’t need to send picks.
Also Riley….when was the last time he dealt with the Celtics?

I think Jordan Crawford deal in Brad Stevens' first year. While his BFF Ainge was the GM.
I know it's fun to pump up Riley vs. Celtics, but that won't stop a smart deal from getting done.

Oh yeah I had forgot about that one.
I am sure he would be happy to nab two firsts and Jrie.

I'd bet Jrue ends up being a Sacramento Kings player.

Re: Most Logical Jrue Holiday Trade? (Miami)
Part of the problem here is that you have BOS turning Jrue into all expiring money. Why? BOS doesn't need that. You have them paying a premium for savings in years that they don't need savings. If the Celtics want to duck the tax next year, they do need to move Jrue but they don't need to clear him out entirely like this deal does. They just need to shed a like $5-10M of it depending on where their 2026 pick lands, which means they can still take back $25-30M of salary for 26-27. That extra $25-30M you have them unnecessarily clearing is inflating the cost so much of what they have to give up here. It's not a good trade match.

Re: Most Logical Jrue Holiday Trade? (Miami)
I will say, I do think Jrue to MIA is particularly interesting IF they land Kevin Durant. MIA would obviously be committing to a shorter window in that point but they'd be pretty cleaned out in terms of assets to add more win now pieces.
PHX gives: Durant
PHX gets: Wiggins, DRob
BOS gives: Jrue
BOS gets: Rozier
MIA gives: Wiggins, Drob
MIA gets: Durant, Jrue
That works salary wise, though MIA may want to expand to dump Haywood and SloMo into TPEs elsewhere to avoid hard cap at 1st apron that they'd be up against (and pending the fill out the roster math, they might HAVE to do that, but seems easy enough). Obviously the actual value MIA sends to Phoenix has to be worked out first and foremost and it's unlikely MIA has much left in terms of assets if they do that.
I can't imagine MIA would be able to land a better player than Jrue just for the straight salary relief of Rozier. I doubt BOS chips in any real value for that because the savings aren't enough in 25-26 season where they need it, though maybe they can use his expiring deal as a means to take back some lower but multi year money due to the wiggle room they have in future years that I mentioned above. Other teams pay to send BOS 2 year money instead of 1 that totals less than Rozier in 25-26 and pay value for that and maybe that can go to MIA for assuming the risk that Jrue starts to seriously decline soon.

Re: Most Logical Jrue Holiday Trade? (Miami)
I'm so glad everyone sees the value of getting out from under the repeater tax for Boston. Too bad they don't see it for Miami. Trading Robinson for Jrue should not happen. We're better off releasing Robinson and saving $10 million, giving us the flexibility to resign Davyion Mitchell. I mean, haven't we learned our lesson with over the hill point guards making too much cash? We saw Dragic fall apart, then doubled down and went for Kyle Lowry. Now, you expect us to do it again for a guy who clearly is already on the decline?
I don't get it! I'd rather take my chances with Dru Smith and Davyion Mitchell!

You're projecting built-in bias. You're a Celtics' fan. I have no animus toward Jrue & this would be 2 trades away already. The Bucks have no stake. I take extra interest in a Jrue trade because he's a notable former Buck, yes. But not in a negative way.
Does Sam Vecenie have an axe to grind cuz he's a Bucks' fan? IMO he's the best NBA analyst, neutral, & he assessed you're going to have to give up real asset(s) cuz of the contract & decline already starting. Points out, yes, the new apron/tax rules make it worse. Your situation's the prime example. The 1st rd pick this yr is barely an asset. Next yr's is better, but still far from premium. I'm being fair.
Starting at minute 17, Sam goes into Jrue's negative trade value.

The biggest benefit to you is arguably getting most of the way to under the 2nd apron this year (hard to make it w/out multiple moves), which may well be their primary goal. Now, it was pointed out you can't combine a trade exception & a salary, but that it could be still done in a 3-way trade.
Then you clear out the ugly back end where Jrue would be getting 37m as a 38 yr old as well, and for a few years balance your books. That's worth a mid-tier asset concession. I jrue a disgruntled Heat fan as well, so I must not be far off value-wise!

They don't need to clear out the back end of Jrue's deal. Presumably Hauser would be gone in a follow up deal to this for the savings and if you clear Jrue/Hauser then they're about $40M below the tax next year (26-27 and I mean the tax altogether, not just aprons). They're books are well balanced already for the last two years of Jrue's deal. I'm not expecting Jrue to be good value in those years but their books are so clean that it makes absolutely no sense to use draft capital to shed it years in advance as opposed to attaching draft capital to it when that money is on the books and use it as salary filler in an acquisition deal because they have plenty of room to accommodate taking money back in those years.

Yeah, sorry I may have lumped you in with some other bad trade threads and lashed out at the wrong one. My bad.
I still think this trade is bad for BOS, though. Overall, my thoughts are, yes the repeater / apron stuff is bad. But, Jrue is not. He’s still quite good. And ultimately the game is still played on the court. I know some analysts are saying they’ll need to attach assets, others aren’t. Your proposal isn’t as bad as some of the others, but including multiple picks, esp the 26 one, is too much, imo.

Why do people keep adding years to Jrues age.
He is currently 34. He will be age 35-37 for the life of his contract.
I will agree that completely clearing his salary is worth and would require some assets.
I don’t think that is the Celtics goal though.
The biggest things are get out of that second apron as soon as possible and reset the repeater tax as soon as possible, also reducing the tax bill this year.
There is this perceived notion that they need to do it all this year which isn’t true or realistic.
I think the Celtics will look to shave a couple tiers 10-12 m of the tax bill in 25/26 and get under the tax and hence both aprons in 26/27.
They will look to take back salary including guy/s that can play and help the team in a Jrue trade. They will just focus on getting a path to dropping about 15 million for 26/27. They have until Trade deadline in Feb 2027 to accomplish that so I don’t see any panic moves where they give up assets.
Maybe something like this where they can shed all the salary including guy one fell swoop materializes and they do it, but I would be really surprised.

Good Luck to you guys in clearing out some of Jrue's salary. It just doesn't make logical sense that the team to help you is Miami. The Heat have their own tax issues, and I would think it would be obvious that we're not going to sacrifice our position in order to help Boston. I didn't see Jrue as a guy you go into the repeater tax for.

Re: Most Logical Jrue Holiday Trade? (Miami)
Saying we only need to clear some of Jrue's salary seems a little disingenuous. The receiving team doesn't have the option of paying some of Jrue's salary. They have to pay all of it for the duration of the contract.
Would the Celtics take back Murray's contract from the Pelicans? That's clearing some of Jrue's salary.

The NBA season will likely run beyond June 12th this yr, Jrue's birthday. So what are we talking about? He'll be 38 yrs old by the end of the contract, like I said. Either way he'll project to be worth a fraction of the $, if anything by that point.
This would be the 2nd yr over the 2nd apron. If you end up over for a 3rd of 5 seasons, you effectively lost your 1st rd pick 7 yrs later, when you'll likely be bad. When you're back to contending, you want to be near the threshold. You could plan on being a little under, yet things like contract incentives change the equation. It's not where you want to be. So I think you got to do it now, especially for a season you're not going to contend.
For the projections after, the certainty of getting all of Jrue's $ off the sheet, and having around a $35m per reset is going to be very beneficial. Maybe this aids not have to potentially sacrifice Derrick White too. I'm here to help.
