Historically, Shai isn't in the upper echelon of free throw attempters. He's 26th all time in attempts per 100 possessions, in a tier with guys like Lebron, Shawn Kemp, Jimmy Butle, and Kevin Durant at around 10 per 100.
Shai could climb the list with a bunch more prime seasons at his current rate (12 per 100). The biggest free throw getters average 12+ for their whole careers, and have prime seasons where they hit 17-20.
In terms of guards, guys like Harden, Luka, Iverson, MJ, Wade, Kobe, and Trae are all above Shai. I think Shai will likely climb in into the top 15, but is unlikely to crack the truly elite group (Embiid, Shaq, Giannis, and of course Corey "Bad Porn" Maggette).
I wonder how Maggette would be viewed in this current era. A career 47.9 eFG% paired with a 57.7 TS% is a pretty crazy stat.
He was SUCH a specialist, so I don't think era changes much. Had Maggette been piling up free throws for playoff teams, we'd have regarded him differently, but he had the misfortune on playing his whole career with the Clipper in their curse era, and then joined the Warriors after they stopped being a playoff team.
This guy was an athletic, efficient scorer, who could sort of guard 3 positions. He was a total zero as a passer, and was a long 2 specialist when he wasn't getting to the line. I heard someone on a podcast (maybe John Hollinger?) compare him to Jonathan Kuminga, and thought that sort of fit.
