Indiana and OKC both had incredible returns for their stars they traded. Getting year 2 Haliburton and Shai transformed those franchises. And the moves didn't turn out so well for the Kings and Clippers which is the other side of this. Probably not too too bad for the Kings, had a fun season plus Sabonis is still really good. Still trending toward a bad place though.

Honestly had we not wasted the Jett pick, getting Wendell, Franz and say Lively from a trade would have been right on par. Franz and Wendell is still darn good for our rebuilding move though. That trade also turned out horribly for the Bulls.

The parallel would be trading our best young player...you in?

No, I really want this group to work. Is there some reality where they trade one of our big 3 for a young player and it leads to a title down the line? Wouldn't surprise me, but I think this team has to be given a chance to fail and I'm sure most agree. Get them their help this year and give them a couple of years before making a choice like that. I don't even like moving Suggs yet, but if they got a clear cut star guard for him I would consider.

Pacers had 5 straight 1st round exits, Thunder had 4 I believe. They reached a point where they had to do something. Though Sabonis was pretty young still when they made that move, that was more ballsy than the obvious moving George for a mega package.

Yeah, trading Paul George yielded more than trading Vooch. Good reboots all around, though.

Sabonis AND Oladipo for George first...two good very young players.

Ironic that Sabonis was key to both builds and, therefore, ORL fueled the whole f**king thing :nonono:

Yeah this is actually crazy to think about. And we then traded Ibaka to Toronto which helped win them a title

So we turned Sabonis/Oladipo into Ibaka which we turned into nothing basically (sorry Ross)

And Oladipo/Sabonis go on to, in a roundabout way, being traded for Shai and Haliburton (and Jalen Williams). Gotta love it.

The Pacers offer a great lesson in not falling so in love with your players that you lose sight of your purpose. The job is to build a championship contender. That rarely happens from the draft alone. When I watch these playoffs I become more convinced that moving one of the big three is the most efficient way to take the next step, in part because all three are poor three-point shooters. Short of that, it’s time to stop stock-piling draft picks that we end up using on scrubs. I have no faith in Jeff but I guess we’ll see.

In 2022 we were all happy that the Warriors, who won the championship, did it mostly through drafting, so we were excited because our team was built through drafts. Last year we started comparing our team to the Celtics because their two Jays are like our Paolo and Franz, but ours younger, bigger and not yet in their prime, and we need to build around them. Now we’re championing winning through trades. It’s obvious that each championship team have a mixture of draftees and trades and Orlando need to find the right balance for this team to win a championship. We shall start by getting a vet point guard.

And to push it further - the 2017 #25 pick which came with Ross was traded to Philly for a 2020 FRP, which was later traded back to Philly in a package for Fultz.

That Philly pick would become Tyrese Maxey - whom we had already passed on in favour of Cole with our own pick.

Fultz leaving the Magic put an end to that long line of fumbles which started with trading Oladipo and #12 for Ibaka. Along the way other teams eventually added Sabonis, Paul George, SGA, Haliburton, Jalen Williams and Maxey to their teams as a result of that deal.

Before start of CF i said OKC won't lose more than 3 games rest of the way.

Like any team, they aren't perfect, but they are best team NBA has, they were also best team in regular season.

Presti

Guy built championship core out of 2022 draft with 3# & 12# pick. Got DPOY candidate (before injury was 1 &2 in DPOY ) & all star player (one of two all stars) , paired them with SGA, leveraged their rookie deals, got I Hart , flipped 6# pick for Caruso, found undrafted Dort, found Aaron Williams with 55# pick

What's there to say? Guy is the Man.

Oh and learned upon own mistakes from 2013 when he thought he has infinite time to win championship. Time is always now or never.

Elite defense coupled to excellent eFG% stat lines, OKC has a winning formula.

I will never understand why we traded Oladipo for Ibaka. Rob Hennigan did us dirty. Especially since we traded Ibaka at the deadline that same season. Even if you wanted to trade Oladipo, we could have gotten someone better than Ibaka. Someone who wanted to be here.

Or, he just read & processed the new CBA on a higher level than the rest and adapted quickly. Ironically, short-term overpays on older vet role players (Hartenstein, Caruso) were the smart plays heading into a time of financial constraints. Those guys are huge difference makers & perfect fits and all parties understand that they will not be getting the same salaries next contract…but they will likely have nice rings.

Presti is the best…it will be fun to watch how GMs like him and Brad Stevens and, hopefully, Weltman navigate their contending teams through different phases under the CBA…it’s been mandated, there WILL be constant shuffling of players, especially on the best teams.

He got pressured by management so felt he needed to do something and he did his former boss at the time now current boss a favor...

I always said I had no problem trading Dipo, it was the return we got back was idiotic, including the Sabonis draft pick was negligence. Now it feels like he was buttering up to his former boss thinking his time was coming up soon...

The win now moves are what scares me especially since Weltman knows he has to do something. My goodness I hope they’re praying and scouting and using all the data in their arsenal to make the right moves.
