Dick
#9
Portland 2nd

For

Smith jr
#10

Now this is a good deal I'd like to make.

No way Houston does that unless they get Giannis without giving up Smith Jr. There also is a net increase of almost $5m in salary for Toronto by swapping the two players, so a big tax consideration, and the Raptors would have to negotiate an extension with Smith Jr this summer or risk losing him as an RFA next summer. Is there a possible Dick-Smith Jr trade, it makes positional sense for the Raptors, not sure about Houston, although acquiring Giannis in a deal that includes Jalen Green going to MIL might increase their interest in Dick and reduce their incentive to keep Smith Jr

Smith looks to be on the way out in Houston one way or the other. I agree with you this trade might not be high on their list, but I could see how it makes sense

3 year 40 million

I’d be pretty surprised if they extended Ochai to anything that’s not significantly under-value this off-season.

He’s had one good season and is probably the 9th/10th man at best in the rotation this year. No need to extend him before he reaches RFA

Probably 4 years between $8-13 million AAV. Frontloaded.

I'd rather just grab Zion.

If the plan is to go for it next season, than we might as well give ourselves the highest ceiling possible.

Probably need a future 1st in there with some protection - especially since Murphy is on a killer deal - but something like this is probably closer to what a Murphy/Jones trade would look like.

I do think if we're trading out that we do need to get a backup center in the deal or find another trade for one since it's very likely Chomche is still a year away from being a contributor and the 2025 Draft is getting increasingly thin.

He cannot be your team's center on a contender and his skillset isn't utilized to its fullest if you put him at PF.

What do you guys think about a roster balancing trade centered around Agbaji/Dick/Walter and Mark Williams. We have 4 players currently best deployed at the 2 spot (RJ, Dick, Walter, and Agbaji), and we lack a true rim protector, rim runner, and vertical lob threat in the front court. We also lack a backup and successor to Poeltl on our roster.

Charlotte just tried to trade Williams (a trade that got recinded) to the Lakers for a very similar player in Dalton Knecht plus other pieces. Williams is young (23), has legit center size (7'2") and length (7'7" wingspan), while still being switchable on the perimeter, and is a capable free throw shooter (80% last year) and passer (3.4 assists / per 36) who can stay on the court at the end of games.

Charlotte needs shooting/spacing to pair with Melo. In the Lakers deal they got back Knecht, Reddish, a 2030 pick swap, and an unprotected 2031 first-round pick. I don't think Masai would or should pay that much, but we could make a competitive offer. Something like:

Dick + future (protected) FRP for Williams

Thoughts on

Barrett/POR 2025 SRP/LAL 2026 SRP

For Ball/Collins/Chi 2025 FRP

Collins can be an expiring bench big that is at least playable. Ball can easily slide in as a starting shooting guard/point guard I can play next to either IQ, Shead or Walter. We can probably re-sign ball to a sub $20 million deal and let Collins expire.

With nine and 12 this year we can either try to move up to get one solid prospect in the top six or draft two solid bench players to round out the roster.

Would the Nets be able to move up in the draft to select Dylan Harper?

Brooklyn Nets trades: Cam Johnson + #8 + #19
San Antonio trades: Harrison Barnes + #2

If i'm trading for Mark Williams, i'm not giving up Dick and i'm loathe to give up a first given the alleged seriousness of his health concerns. Either 39 and/or a future second or no deal, it's that simple.

Interesting and silly enough that the Bulls might actually do something like that. Chicago shouldn't be trading their pick this year but they're the king of mid and their FO has never seen a bad deal they'll say no to.

Ingram can maybe be that guy, but not totally sold.

I think you're right, but we should probably be a bit more patient, considering how poorly the team has performed so far. I think we need to figure out what works before we start consolidating.

Yes, I'm purposefully avoiding the word "evaluate."

I think the time to make a consolidation move will be once we see how these guys work together, as nobody knows how Ingram fits with any of these guys yet. He might be this group's "Rudy Gay," and maybe we'll move on from him sooner, or he could be this group's "Ibaka" and is an important piece in some playoff runs. I think they need to actually play to figure it out. But hey, if there is a great move available, we should go for it.

The team has done a great job of asset accumulation and payroll management, but has done a poor job of addressing need and balance.

I think when considering what a competitive would look like it is a lot simpler than people realize:

Roster composition:

When building out a team PG and C are your two most important positions to fill. You should never compromise and round up the solution and round down the problem. Our issue for many years is avoiding the importance of the there positions. When we won the championship, yes kawhi was a beast, but without a Lowry, Fred Tandem and a Gasol/Ibaka you weren't winning anything.

PG - I've been saying this since day one. IQ is not going to cut it. It's not like we need a JA or a Fox, but we need a PG that facilitates and can also disrupt the other teams PG. Boston with the Jrue and White combo. OKC with Caruso and Wallace. My recommendation is Chris Paul, Brogdon and Shead. To acquire a Paul and Brogdon will not be super costly, but what they bring to the team will be night and day.

C - People crap on Jakob all the time, but the reality is that he has been our most impactful and consistent player. What we need is depth and some spacing. Brook Lopez or Bobby Portis come to mind. I'll come back to this point later, but if we have a Brook and Jakob or Jakob and Bobby combo this will do wonders

Now comes to filling out the rest of your roster.

Alpha scorer - We have always lacked an alpha scorer outside of Vince and Kawhi. Ingram can kind of play a poor's man version of that role, but he is best suited as your second best scorer.

Floor Spacing - We actually are more than sufficient when it comes to this. Dick, Jakobe, Battle all can play that role. Especially with the addition of Ingram in the off-season. One guy I would consider trying to add for depth is a Paul Reed type of PF that can stretch the floor. Boucher is equally good at that, but not as the starter. Hence the need for a Bobby or Lopez.

Defensive Swing - I actually don't think this is as hard to acquire as people feel. A Mattise Thybulle, Kelly Oubre. Doesn't have to be a DPOY, but I think there are enough defensive swings that we can target.

MVP - This is the hardest piece, but also the piece you have to always start with. We ain't winning anything without a MVP type level player. Every team that has won has one: SGA, Tatum, Joker etc... So when one becomes available, yes you gut the roster to acquire cause the rest of the pieces are easier to get.

So how we make this happen:

Let's start with Giannis trade: Bucks, want young players with star potential, picks and need salaries to match:

IQ, Barnes, Dick and 4 first round picks - For Giannis, Portis and Pat C. Need to move a few smaller pieces to make salaries work cause Bucks are in second apron, but doable. Also, don't see many teams topping that offer. If there is a way to keep this years pick and give later picks even better.

Move RJ - I think the market for someone like RJ is pretty good - I'm thinking RJ, Ochai and Pat C to Spurs for Paul and Vassell. This deal in some ways makes a lot of sense for both sides. Spurs have a glut of guards. They are most likely taking Harper at 2. So a trio of Castle, Fox and Harper eat up pretty much all of minutes. Paul was an one year bridge player. RJ gives the Spurs a big SF that can drive and penetrate being a 3rd or 4th option. His salary is reasonable and he is experienced enough to play with the time line of their roster. Vassell is more effective when utilized in the offense. However, him being buried kind of makes him like another John Collins for the Spurs.

Free agents, round it out with a Malcolm Brogdon, Paul Reed and maybe a Jae'Sean Tate. These guys will come super cheap, especially if we have a contending roster. The last two probably at the minimum as they could be out of the league.

Paul -Shead - Brogdon
Vassell - Walter - Wilson
Ingram - Battle - Tate
Giannis - Mogbo - Reed
Jakob - Portis - Yang/Chomche

I realize this is a complete turnover of our roster, but we are moving assets and consolidating assets. If our window is 3-4 years, I would definitely run with this roster.

Williams isn't worth that now given his injury speculations. Plus, for us, he is only going to be a backup because, for sure we look to re-sign YAK plus Williams can't stay healthy.

We can find a cheaper, not injured guy at #39 who won't be as good, but again, cheaper and healthier...and can be a backup for 4 years and learn from Yak.

The big fish is Durant. We can’t trade for Giannis because Scottie is ineligible to be traded until mid July, and I think Giannis gets dealt by the draft.

3 team with UTAH and PHX

Goals:
Phoenix: Drop salary, retool around Booker by bolstering front court and youth

Toronto: Go for a big fish in Durant. Go for it in the East.

Utah: Add talent. Trade Kessler if you won’t extend him. Hunt for another top pick next year.

The trade:

Phoenix:
K Durant
for
J Poeltl, J Collins, ‘25 TOR 1st (#9), ‘27 TOR 1st

Toronto:
J Poeltl, RJ Barrett, G Dick, ‘25 1st (#9), ‘27 1st, ‘26 LAL 2nd
for
K Durant, W Kessler

Utah:
W Kessler, J Collins
for
RJ Barrett, G Dick, ‘26 LAL 2nd

Phoenix:
Use the #9 to draft their future PG in Kasparas Jaku, or draft their future PF in CMB or Essengue

D Booker / T Jones
B Beal / C Martin
R Dunn / G Allen
J Collins / (draft) Essengue
J Poeltl / N Richards

Toronto:

I Quickley / J Shead
B Ingram / J Walter
K Durant / O Agbaji
S Barnes / J Mogbo
W Kessler / C Boucher

Cam had his best year and is 29 years old now. At the same age as RJ he was a sophmore putting up 9 points a game.

Not sure what Cam's next contract will be but it will probably end up similar to whatever RJ will get. Do I believe Cam into his mid 30's will be better than RJ in his late 20's? No I do not

Even with the 6-8 million saved annually making this trade, we'd still be in a position where we'd be looking at having to pay Cam over 30 million to keep him because I don't foresee a paycut or freeze to stay in Toronto. Thats not even mentioning the huge drop in player quality between 9 and 19. Goes from possible starter with star upside to bench player if youre lucky
