Siding with the law doesn't mean you are siding with Ghomeshi or any rapists. I think we should introduce chemical castration for people like that and introduce professional help for people that like to beat and get beat during intimate activities whether consensual or not.

My mother raped me 149 times between the age of 10-14 (I ran away from good roughly a month after my 14th birthday).
She abused me so bad I needed corrected surgery on my genitals, twice. And yet, I kept going back...

Rape and abuse of this nature is really not primarily about the sex part, rather, it's the control and manipulation. Right up until I left home and nearly a year afterwards, I felt I was simply a bad kid, who deserved most of what had been done to him his whole life up until then. I was kept out of gym class to hide my injuries. I never (once) was permitted to going over to friend's house, or even outside our own home to play. My entire life was built around protecting HER lie and living in an alternate reality.

I can't imagine where I would be today if I had not been contacted by CBC, to take part in a documentary about child youth and abuse. Initially I turned them down, but they approached me a second time, and I agreed. From that moment on I evolved from a meek victim who was incredibly naive and easily manipulated, to eventually becoming an activist who speaks out regularly (daily) on these sorts of subjects, so that other's like my younger self, have a constant support group of like-minded people who can empathize with them. It's become one of my life's goals to pay-it-forward, and use my horrific experiences, as a beacon for those who feel alone in the world, in their own version of misery. If I can't pull something positive; a true beneficial learning opportunity, then I felt I've given up on something valuable and worthwhile. So I will always speak up and be the voice of the voiceless.

It's really important to have that support group around you. Suffering through sexual abuse can have an extremely humiliating and emotional unsettling impact on our persona. We're often left feeling alone in the world, without people to relate to, or talk to, or love (us).

So rather than picture things from a straight forward black and white issue, think of it more like one of the most complex emotional, psychological and physical experiences an individual can go through in life, period, end of story. It's easy to presume you (or I) might or even should act like <X>. But the reality is, enduring those experiences can shatter people, literally, for the rest of their lives. There's no simple answer to any of it all.

Your story is difficult to read about, I'm really sorry that you had to endure all of that. Thank you for shining a light on this and providing context to those of us that are lucky enough to be naive.
It's impressive that you went from feeling meek to an impassioned public speaker. You are doing truly special work and leveraging a nightmare situation to make the world a better place. Few would have the drive to do so, let alone the power.
For you to mature into your current self is a testament to your strength of character and you should be proud of who you are. I'm extremely impressed by your maturity and resolve.
