Extend Joe or No?

Post#1 » by ConstableGeneva » Sat May 31, 2025 8:47 pm

This isn't a thread of whether he should be fired this summer or not (I don't think he will be). But do you want him to continue on as coach past next season? I believe he is on the last year of his current contract or do you think he's done enough to earn an extension?

Like it or not, he's the coach with the highest winning percentage in league history. Let's see what his record looks like after a season without Tatum.

If the decision had to be made today, then I vote extend.

I wouldn't extend him
but I'd offer him a new two year deal (this season + next) at a big raise
like 2yrs $24 million
to reward Coach Mazz for the championship and to oversee the bridge into new ownership
after this year, depending on how the year goes, he'll either get a much longer extension or fired and get to keep the remaining money
& celtics start thinking about the right coach/upper management for the Bill Chisolm version of the franchise
which could just be Joe

Give me one name who would do better, especially under the circumstances he was dealt with and then you will know the person who you will end up bitching about in a few years. I'm sorry, but people really do suck.

He's going to get an extension regardless of if he's here after next season, they're not going to let him coach as a lame duck. That never goes well in sports.

If they were going to fire him, they already would've done it by now

He can somersault himself back to Rhode Island, but of course they're giving him an extension. They all drink the Green Koolaid in the Celtics Front Office. All happy campers eating their organic smores...

Extending him is the worst thing they can do.

But no doubt he gets a 2 year extension and I have to seriously consider it this team is worth my time for the interim.

Currently, Joe's coaching win percentage in the regular season is still higher than the percentage who voted NO. But it's getting close.

I do, but I guess I should have clarified "available" coaches.

I'm all for keeping Joe around. Is he flawed? Absolutely, but he's also really talented and has only 3 seasons under his belt (including one championship), so I feel like there is just so much room for him to grow into the role.

Next year I think will be really interesting. It should be a no-pressure "off year" where we are going to face very different challenges than we have had so far in his tenure while chasing banners. If Joe can show that he has the ability to develop talent in these non-competitive years, that will bode very well for his long-term prospects because he's already a strong leader for a contender, so if he can also head up a rebuild/resetting roster then you know he can wash and dry.

If he's not playing the kids and guys like Tillman are getting run because Joe likes the vets etc., then I'm going to have a problem. He needs to show he can shift into a team building form of coaching rather than just putting his foot on the gas.

I'd like him locked in for at least the next 2 years if not 3. One down year, Tatum's return year and then possibly one more. At that stage you'll either be ready for wholesale changes or confident you've got the right man for the job.

I'd swap him for Spo in an instant, but beyond the already employed cream of the coaching crop, there's not another name I can think of that I'd rather have that the helm at this stage.

Brad Stevens If he wanted to do the "Greg Popps" (HC and POBO) way. But if that isn't possible, then Taylor Jenkins easy. Just watch the way Memphis played and moved the ball. Just watch the way Jenkins utilized all his players. Most who are/were nobodies. Give Jenkins an upgrade in talent that Boston has and have him incorporate his ball/player movements and watch Boston rise again.

And I would also give Sam Cassell a real chance.

I don’t hate Joe, and I do think he’s getting better every year. But for some reason, he’s fully bought into the three-point analytics — which is fine in theory — but he has no real counterpunch when the threes aren’t falling.

He still gets standoffish if you ask him about his strategy, too.

If he doesn’t show improvement next season and the offense is still just, “let’s jack up threes because the analytics say a three is better than a two,” then I want him gone.
