Thibs elevated his PGs repeatedly in Chicago.
Derrick won an MVP with him
John Lucas III was highly productive with us and a bum pretty much his entire career otherwise
DJ Augustine was in the d League then was playing awesome for us and the following year
Nate Robinson rejuvenated his career with us and fell off
I'm sorry but Brunson was elevated by Thibs just like those dudes were. It isn't to say he's not awesome but Thibs helped him raise his level quite a bit and we'll see how things shake out without him.
Thibs coached Brunson in the playoffs for the Mavs?
Knicks FO identified the talent on the rise and they and Thibs gave him more minutes, which = more stats.
Credit to Thibs for having a pretty one player centric offense though. That helped Brunson's stats too.
Excellent point Buzz

This is what I think the Knicks should go for. I just think Leon is too risk averse to go for it outright. however, putting Jay Wright as a figurehead and communicator to the Nova alums would make it work.

Re: Breaking: Tom Fired
When I saw that Thibs was fired... I was surprised because he met the expectations of getting to the ECF. I guess it was a big blow to lose to the Pacers and doesn't see Thibs outcoaching Carlisle.
The bad part about Thibs.. isn't just his stubborness but his inability to get most out of the young guys. He hasn't really gotten out of the young kids during his tenure.
The good part is that Thibs legacy as a Knicks coach will be on the positive side because he didn't leave where everyone wants him out. I wish him the best of luck.

Re: Breaking: Tom Fired
I'm skimming through this thread and all I can say is anyone who believes Thibs goes from a coach who lives and breathes basketball, no wife or family, sleeps in his office and told by every player who has played for him says he had them the most prepared than any coach they've played for to 'players didn't know their roles' coach also someone who believes screaming A smiff will be President.
No, Leon probably just realized what most of the fanbase thought about Thibs, there was a ceiling on him elevating this team. That he is the coach before the coach who gets them over the hump, he's the Knicks version of Jackson even though he's 100 times the coach that Mark was, but he's just the almost guy. It may be true some players didn't like their role or thought they weren't being used the best way they feel could be used, but they knew what Thibs wanted out of them, that's for sure.

The firing isn’t shocking but him being completely out of the organization is.
I'm in the middle ground on Thibs. I have immense gratitude for what he did for this organization which had been joke for the better part of two decades. But I accept there is a very strong case for moving on from him as much of the criticism of him seems fair even if it is easy to blow his replacement.
I understand he's upset about being shut out but it is probably best for him. If things go well, he'll be kicking himself for not realizing what the new coach did and if things go poorly for him he'll be perpetually thinking they fired me for this moron. Either way it doesn't seem enjoyable so a full break is for the best.
That said he shouldn't be treated as a pariah and I hope down the road they can find a way to do something for him in the Garden to show we do appreciate his real achievements here.

If you could pick any name available out there who would feel great?
Personally I like the JVG idea and the Bryant idea, both offer different things. Id take either.
Johnnie Bryant, Head Coach
Jeff Van Gundy, Associate Head Coach?
Idk if JVG would be open to that. I think he would only want to come back to the Knicks if he was HC again. But I would love it if he did obviously.

You gotta learn how to play it, when things aren't going your way you avoid the Hamsterdam thread, and report anyone who tries to get at you with arguments outside of it. When things are going your way you go in there and cause hell, then disengage and act like nothing happened when you're outside the thread. Some people here can't let go of the beefs, and you can use that against them.
Thats too complicated.
And I dont report or put on ignore. A man's gotta have a code.

Correct!

What I just don't understand with Thibs is how he apparently went on this sabbatical, was talking with all these modern coaches picking their brains, learning from them. Then, he comes back and does virtually everything the same way he did with the Bulls and Wolves

The meltdown when Hurley says no thanks, Bryant stays in Cleveland with his boy, Leon decides Wright is too divisive of a choice for the lockeroom being too close to the Nova boys and considering he's a never before NBA coach risk so trots out retread Malone or someone like that....will be bigly.

Simmons thinks Mikal’s upcoming extension may have played at least some factor in this. Mikal is more likely to extend here if Thibs is out of the picture. It’s a player’s league.

Go back and read the Bulls board from back then. They thought we were going to be champs once he left. THREE PLAYOFF VICTORIES IN A DECADE.
Context wrote:I was talking about AFTER you lost Thibs. You didnt have a Brunson. Look...Brunson has put up historical numbers that EVEN Rose didnt accomplish.
Not taking away anything from Rose but -I'm not interested in having a discussion with anyone who cant acknowledge what Brunson has accomplished-
that only 1 or 2 other players in NBA history has...
https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/brunsja01.html
I don't want to come off as a hater in the slightest - I love Brunson and was rooting for y'all hard - as hard as I've rooted for any team in NBA in the last decade but look at that career arc. Once he got to NYC and played with Thibs, he took off. Just like he elevated Derrick to be the youngest MVP in NBA history - he's elevated Brunson. I hope for your sake Brunson continues to progress but I'm leery.
The reality is - the heart and soul that you've seen your team play with just got thrown away for the lottery ticket that you'll replace Thibs with a better coach. The reality is - there aren't that many dudes out there that are better than him, and while he has limitations, you just had one of the best playoff runs of your life. Coming from a fan who has had nothing to cheer for in a decade and is in NBA hell - I'd say I wouldn't be so quick to throw it away.
At the end of the day you're talking about James Dolan and he's just as incompetent as Jerry Reinsdorf. I hope you enjoyed these years with meaningful basketball, it sucks without them and I'd kill for the Thibs teams back in Chicago again.
