Re: 2024-25 NBA Draft Talk
I kind of like MIcah Peavy at 41 if he’s still there. He’s got alot of attributes I see in players like Vince Williams, JTA, Wells, Lee etc who have/are carving out solid NBA careers.
Its always a guessing game of which older 3/D guys end up making rosters… and its kind of been a combo of guys that are jack of all trades or guys that are just elite shooters, etc. So while Tonje, Brea, Chaz, etc may be more lights out from 3, I think Peavy brings a better all around game. He strikes me as the type of player that Kerr would play even as a rookie because of his IQ, effort, and pass-first mentality, while still having the size/athleticism/(some)skillset of an NBA player.

I like him, but more as a udfa. As a 24 yr old wing he does create some extra possessions on defense and can score in a variety of ways. But there's not really a lot of time at the 3/4 position open. Moody, JK, JB and Buddy will all play the 3 for us and JB and Dray will monopolize most of the 4 minutes. I'd probably be disappointed if we drafted him at 41, I really think we should be looking at guards and centers unless they're bringing something significantly different than Moody, Buddy or JK.

I’m not expecting anyone at 41/UFDA/2way to crack a rotation, so position doesn’t really matter to me. I just want whoever is going to have the best NBA career. Now there are some guards and centers I like more than Peavy, I just don’t think they are there at 41.
I think my “boring” but ultimately best for Warriors scenario would be somehow ending up with our 2ways being Armstrong, Peavy and Nembhard. 3 players that are smart enough to play garbage minutes in year one but also capable of carving out NBA careers.

I don't think anyone should be expected to crack the rotation at 41, but I think there will be players that can by the end of the year. But then again I thought we should've started Post at the beginning of the year last year. I really think Proctor, Drake Powell, and Alijah Martin could take over a reduced GP2 role moving forward.
I do like Nembhard as well. I don't think he'd crack the rotation but if he had to play in spot minutes like Pat Spencer, I could see him fulfilling that role. I haven't really watched enough Armstrong to have much of an opinion on him, but Knox and Key seemed very interesting.
I just think if there's no way for playing time for the player and there's a log jam there, what's the point of drafting that player unless there is some type of plan for them moving forward.

I’d definitely put Proctor and Martin (plus Short) in that same Nembhard category in terms of being fine with them on a 2way that can play garbage minutes right away.
Powell I think will be long gone. But would definitely draft him ahead of anyone mentioned so far purely on elite defensive potential.
Knox and Key (and Spencer) won’t be 2way eligible, so I think they are as good as gone. So to me someone like Peavy and Nembhard just fill those roles. And even with our logjam at 3/4 there were plenty of games that Santos or 2way guys were needed for garbage time. Peavy can be on a 2way for two seasons instead of using up a roster spot while we are playing out the Steph/Jimmy/Dray years where end of bench spots are filled up by vets.
I basically want our 2way spots to be high IQ guys that can step into garbage time without an issue, can fill in a rotation spot here and there when needed, and have upside to be decent rotation guys at some point (Post is the ultimate example of this). I think Armstrong, Nembhard, Peavy all fit that billing. And obviously if there is a swing for fences potential guy like Powell or Rocco at 41 i’d go that route first.

Yea I think Drake has the potential to be one of the best defenders in this class.
We only have 9 roster spots filled currently. JK makes 10.
Curry
Podz/Buddy
Moody
JB/JK/Gui
Dray/Post/TJD
41 is most likely to get a roster spot. I'm not sure we're going to get 5 vets when we can't even promise a lot of minutes. We might be able to promise a starting 20mpg center role and a back up pg and back up poa defender role. Supposedly Knox has a lot of fans in the front office.

Could definitely see that happening.
I could also see (and hope) it plays out something like:
- Keep Kuminga because the price is right and nobody is really offering good sign and trade ideas. Dray pulls an Andre and comes off the bench for fit and to keep Kuminga happy (this part is unimportant but I just sense it happening if we keep JK).
- talk Lopez into a vet minimum because he lives here part time and is getting a starting spot on a hopeful contender. Plus his vet min is only a couple million less than the TPMLE
- same with Melton, vet min to re-build value after another injury. He slots into backup combo guard role, but we’d want a Nembhard/Armstrong type option in Santa Cruz to fill in backup minutes (plus obviously Podz/Jimmy/Dray handling a ton of backup PG duties).
- I like Laravia with the TPMLE, I think he could be talked into a seriously good fit of him and Kuminga down the road at the forward spots. Could also go for Trent or any other 3/D option.
Just those solid high IQ 3/D signings has us at:
Steph / Melton
Podz / Moody / Buddy
Jimmy / Laravia
Kuminga / Dray / Santos
Lopez / Post / TJD
So to me the 41 likely is a 2way guy since thats already 13 players… No point wasting a roster spot on someone that can be on a 2way.
Now in my perfect world we also trade Trayce for Phillips… and trade every future 2nd and cash we have to move into the late 1st for Raynaud. That lets us put Raynoud in the 3rd center spot and Phillips as a great 3/D option off the bench that can play POA.
I would absolutely love a final roster of:
Steph / Melton / Nembhard (2way)
Podz / Moody / Buddy / Armstrong (2way)
Jimmy / Laravia / Phillips
Kuminga / Dray / Santos / Peavy (2way)
Lopez / Post / Raynaud

Lopez would be interesting. I like the idea of Jaylin Williams as well as an alternative.
I like Melton, but you can't rely on him to play a role. So we would need a real back up there.
I'd love to trade Trayce he was so bad this year.
But even in your dream scenario you have Peavy as like the 7th guy with a bunch of young players ahead of him. Like what's the point of drafting the 7th forward with no real way to ever use him or get him in the rotation? Just seems like a waste of a pick when we need cheap solutions to fill roster spots.

At least our “pitch” to him would be that he’s in a rotation spot (Which wasnt the case in memphis or Sac), a good fit with Kuminga/Moody down the road, and Jimmy/Dray are on their last legs and already in a situation where splitting time and resting games is preferred. I actually think its a great scenario for him.
- I agree with Melton… but we are talking vet minimum so i’ll take another flyer on him getting healthy over a Wannamaker or Pat Spencer type roster filler with zero upside potential.
- I dont want anyone at 41 to be in the rotation, so I think my plan perfectly avoids that lol. But it has significant long-term potential because 2 years as a two-way player ends right around the time Jimmy/Dray are probably done and not to mention who knows if Santos is still in the mix. In fact, in my scenario maybe its Nembhard that is the 41st pick, who actually does fill a 3rd string role that we will use often throughout the year. Point is, whoever is in those spots is just 3rd string with potential of filling minutes and being a future rotation guy.

I like LaRavia. I've liked him since his draft. I just don't see why he would sign here playing behind Jimmy, Dray, JK and probably Moody. He needs to find a team where he can actually get some minutes.
My counters would be:

I would much rather select Nembhard at 41 and hope we can get Peavy as UDFA even though Nembhard has less chance of being selected because at least there's a pathway to playing time that doesn't involve 5 injuries.
I mean in 2 years Peavy is looking at another contract extension in his prime years as a ceiling of being a solid role player at a time we'd be looking to rebuild completely. So why would we sign him to a longer extension, when we should be trying to bottom out. Basically let's say he becomes NAW but hasn't really played at all in the last 2 years because there's no playing time and now he's looking to get paid while we're bottoming out. Like the Wizards shouldn't be signing NAW to a longer term contract right now. Just doesn't seem like a good use of an asset.
I agree 41 shouldn't be expected to be in the rotation but in your dream scenario Nembhard has a high high likelihood of getting playing time.

Ya Nembhard would be nice because he might be in Post’s situation where he is the best chance at being an NBA guy while also having a path to a role sooner on our team. But that wouldn’t make me not try and get a forward I like just because of our roster structure.
NAW was a 1st round pick so he doesn’t really count. But the example i’d use is Keon Ellis. He didnt play as a rookie and even this year the Kings have still struggled to find him minutes because of the log-jam of vets they have had ahead of him. But it doesn’t matter… they made the right decision finding a real NBA player regardless of what their rotation was. Now they have him and can decide how to fit him in moving forward in the rotation or as an asset to trade.
Now im not saying Peavy is going to be as good as Ellis (almost surely not the case). But if I’ve got Peavy graded as a Vince Williams or Damion Lee level player… thats a great pickup regardless if you currently have minutes for them. Use the 2way rules to our advantage and worry about contracts down the road. And for the record i’m using Peavy in this example but it goes for anyone a team has rated as the best player available that might not be in a position of need (granted, 3/D wing is always a position of need).

I think in the 2nd rd if you can find a NBA level player that's great. I would assume there's a lot of players in the same tier at 41 at which point within that tier you would select the player of need over best player available (especially with no way of playing time now or in the near future). Unless you think Peavy is just a higher tier prospect than any other guards or centers. Which I wouldn't agree with especially since he's already 24.

Also I’m not sure why people don’t like proctor. Anyone have any thoughts on why people aren’t high on him? Hes a solid poa defender and is capable of taking a volume amount of 3s. Can dribble and make decisions. Yea hes not a lead creator and cant get great separation but if you think of him filling a keon Ellis on the low end, melton as a mid end and Derrick white on the high end of outcomes. What’s not to like?

He's not Keon Ellis even on a high end. Ellis was a much more interesting 3&D prospect. Better athlete, much better defender and better shooter. Proctor looked like he was going to be interesting his Freshman season but he didn't really develop much beyond that. Ellis is a much more sudden athlete. I don't see Proctor being much of anything off the ball and certainly not a 3&D target.

I think he'll be a below average defender. Doesn't have especially good size or athleticism, so I'm not sure what the upside is there. His 3pt shooting has improved but his FT% somehow got worse over the three seasons which is suspect. He really only had the one good 3pt% season this past year. Low steal rate. I just see a guy who probably ends up in the GL. Could be wrong, of course. I just think there are more interesting guys to take shots at.
Having said that, all the guys I want might be gone long before our pick so if we ended up with Proctor, I'm not gonna sit here and cry about it.

Condon has removed himself from the draft.
That only leaves Byrd from my earlier wish list.
Sion James and Drake Powell could be solid choices.
John Tonje, a big 2 guard that can shoot, is a guy who could still be on the board that I would be interested in. Older player but he has a plus wingspan and might be someone Kerr would play as a rookie if he made the team.
Koby Brea is another guy who can score but he has alligator arms...maybe he could be another Desmond Bane?
