I was thinking wow, $30 million was a lot for Dolan to be ok giving away. Then I read PHX owes Coach Bud $40million now
Something tells me Thibs will coach one more NBA team before finally calling it quits. One more floor raise for one more lucky team. Maybe Charlotte or Washington or New Orleans hands him the keys? Once a team gets tired of the long tank journey, they should hire Thibs like we did and give him some decent talent to work his magic.
The only reason he still had a job was because CAA took over the Knicks to rebuild their brand, team, organization. They needed a coach who could come here and be steady, and it just so happened that Thibs is a CAA client who was toiling around in Golden State, trying to learn something about the modern game, trying to get another job. He couldn't.
There are stories of him going in for interviews and running a practice for GMs. His practices and scrimmage were ancient, he didn't pass the interviews, he was sitting at home not getting a chance from anybody when Leon called. His time on the Wolves was a disaster, and everybody at the time said that was it for Thibs. Then CAA arrived at MSG. One thing they knew was he can get players to play hard, especially scrubs, who we had a roster full of....if he could come in, make them play hard and be competitive, Knicks fans would be sold because that's what we love, overachieving teams....and compared to what we dealt with for the last 20 years, it was a breath of fresh air and we bought in. He is a major reason why we fixed our circus clown reputation, no doubt about it.
I was thinking about what Dollabills said, about feeling empathy for him. After all the joking and laughing....it did bother me that a dude who knows nothing but basketball, lives and breathes this, doesn't have a family, lives with his mom and takes care of her......I felt bad man. Dollabills was talking about someone losing their passion....mine are just my hobbies, I realized how much it would suck if it was my livelihood. I like the guy, it's just that I don't understand how he would rather be fired than adapt. You can't tell me the front office doesn't tell him what everybody sees.....he just....doesn't want to do it, I guess.
I really wished he would have adapted and stayed here. I was so excited when we got him because I knew we were going to play hard every night, and with his stint at Golden State, I really believed he unlocked some new things that he would implement here. Without the talent, he had a long leash to do things his way, but after loading up the team with more, he coached the same way.
The survey about him being the coach players would least like playing for is an indictment on him. What team will sign him now knowing that everything about his reputation is true....they're just going to sign and pay players that don't play? Would good role players want to join him knowing they won't get any burn?
I doubt he will get another gig somewhere, unless he modernizes that practice/scrimmage in his next interview. But I wish all the luck to him....go off gently into the night, old man.
Now where's Johnnie?
