Is this another version of history? Thats what i also believed at first then someone or somewhere wrote that we were all wrong. The mystery team that made a promise to Franz was never SAC but it ORL instead. Everyomr just assumed it was SAC.

Franz was projected to go late lotto to mid first round before the draft promise circled in on Sacramento.

i went to see some mocks from that time period.

7-9 was his most common projection.

Franz was a great pick at 8. I don’t care if he was predicted to be top 3.

Trying to discount how great Franz was at 8 is some crazy hate.

Magic definitely need help scoring in off season but hard to see them getting any top player without losing Suggs in the trade.
The loss of Suggs would be far greater than his playing ability alone - the loss of his intangible effect on team fight and resolve will be substantial!

I agree. Suggs is infectious on the court. And it was pretty evident last year that after he went down, the team lost its engine.

A very good example of his value.

I hope they can keep him and that he can stay away from further serious injuries (will be hard to do though with the intensity with which he plays)

That isnt right if you watch it closer. The reason the team sucked at that time was on one side they lost one of their few good players and with him the only guard with penetration ability + his defense and intensity but the major part was both stars coming back rusty. Paolo was the most inefficient high volume scorer in the leaque by far, while playing Anfernee Simon's like defense.
Paolos play in combination with his volume and play style pretty much tanked the whole team at the time. As soon as he got better and Franz found his elite defense again this team was one of the top 2 - 3 defensive teams again by any statitically metric and won games. As much as I love Suggs but his influence is much more legend building than actual facts. Even by individual advanced metrics he is only slightly positive.

yes they were rusty. But still doesnt change the fact that they did play without energy once Suggs went down and it took a while for them to regain that momentum.

Suggs impact on the team in terms of energy, effort, and intensity and how it drives his teammates is not a myth or legend. It’s fact. You have to be blind or dumb not to see how the team responds to how he plays.
He sets the standard and sparks his guys to match his defensive intensity and constantly referred to as the heart and soul of the team. WTF are people actually talking about?

Good info here.

I just can't totally wrap my head around sacrificing what would likely be one of this year's first round picks just to move off a contract to create the MLE when they can just decline multiple non-essential team options and accomplish the same thing.

Agreed. The only rationale that really tracks for me is if they're trying to open up the NT-MLE and preserve enough cap space to re-sign Moritz. That kind of flexibility might be tough to achieve just by declining team options.
