even going after a coach with the hope that he can lure a free agent and not because you really like him as a coach is a bad sign

I don't see any path to Giannis that leaves us a better team overall unless we have every ring chaser in the league ready to sign for the minimum.
yeah I agree...if we are losing both are defenders in the trade just to put Brunson/Giannis/KAT together...I just have a tough time seeing how we can have the requisite depth and defense to win...Giannis doesn't solve other teams targeting Brunson/KAT. And then we would have little else to fill out the roster.

And we'd have to take on likely dead salary. This is gonna get stupid really fast. We have a very good team. Just tinker with it for a more optimal fit and add depth.

I wouldn't describe a few miracle-like comebacks as "the system working". We got lucky with the Celtics. They weren't hitting their normally made shots and blew numerous large leads. They also were missing Hauser, Porzingis and Tatum got injured at the end but they were basically finished by then. Thibs had nothing to do with us winning that series. If anything, his coaching put us in the hole more often than not.
by this logic carlisle shouldn't be getting so much love. pacers are winning a lot of games under similar circumstances.
also why bring up tatum just to say it doesn't matter?
Are you saying my logic is flawed? Also, the reason I brought up Tatum is because it did matter somewhat, but since none of us have a Delorean and can change the past we'll never know if the series outcome might have changed with Tatum healthy. Odds are that we would still have won but it his injury is still part of the storyline is it not?
no.
i'm saying if we should discredit "a few miracle-like comebacks" for the knicks, then we should do the same for the pacers. instead, we celebrate their system and coaching against the same discrediting criteria.

we don't know yet if that is the #1 reason...he does have a relationship with Brunson and we know he has a really strong relationship with WWW...who is obviously one of our key decision makers...he Leon right hand man. That is all connections even prior to Giannis.

It would be incredible if the Knicks slow played a long series of solid, cap minded moves for years just to punk us with a mindless all-in starphuck that leaves us without a direction, depth, or draft capital all over again.
Gotcha! We're still dumbasses.
Mikal, OG, Deuce, and some of the kids along with the WAS 1st, two pick swaps, five 2nd rounders, and maybe one more future 1st if our ability to trade it opens up after draft day. That’s what I’m thinking and then Mikal/OG probably go to a 3rd and 4th team (MEM, HOU, PHX) to get MIl younger players and a load of additional picks.
That’s wayyyyy too much. I’m not giving up Mikal or OG. it’s KAT + parts or nothing !!

There are many variables to what ends up being what you end up having to give up in a trade. Lets say instead in a turn of events we pull off Kidd as coach, Bridges makes it clear he would extend here , Giannis wants now to come to NY and we ending up trading OG as part of the package but keep KAT.
Knicks outgoing salaries:
OG (39.6M)
Hart (19.4M)
Mitch (12.9M)
Dadiet (2.8M)
Kolek (2.2M)
PJ Tucker (3.5M)
+whatever few 1st round picks we have left + some pick swaps + some 2nd rd picks
Total=80.4M
Bucks outgoing slaries:
GIannis (57.6M)
Kuzma (21.8M)
Total=79.4
Milwaukee's roster is bare. Just look at it here. They would probably keep a lot of the players we send in the trade:
https://hoopshype.com/salaries/milwaukee_bucks/
A third team would probably need to be involved for the balancing part as the CBA allows it to work easier with a third team involved when one/both teams are over the 1st Apron. They would send out or take on a small contract and receive minor compensation for it. (Like the Hornets did in the KAT for Randle/DDV trade)
Knicks 2025/26 line-up:
KAT/Huk/Giannis
Giannis/Precious/Kuzma
Bridges/Kuzma/MLE/McCullar
McBride/Shamet/Wright/MLE
Brunson/Wright
Kuzma becomes the ultimate 6th man which is a role he is probably better suited for. MLE can be a ring chaser willing to come on a lower salary (Beasley, Oubre who is CAA, Horford, etc.)
Knicks 2025/26 line-up (if it's Oubre for MLE):
Rotation:
KAT/Huk/Giannis
Giannis/Precious/Kuzma
Bridges/Kuzma/Oubre/McCullar
McBride/Oubre/Shamet/Wright
Brunson/Wright

I mean Brunson is much better at this point and young that Lillard and KAT is far better than Lopez who basically can't move anymore...but I get your point.
You would basically be thrusting Deuce into a starting role and having him become a huge piece...but then that takes him away from the bench which means are you going to rely on the Delon Wrights/Shamets of the world to be major contributors.
Also what of OG/Mitch/Mikal/Hart is going out.....and like you said it would have to be complicated mutliple team deal because MIL isn't going to want 3 of those guys they probably want some assets from those guys.

Until Giannis actually requests a trade and says trade me to the Knicks...because in the open market we don't have a legit shot vs some other teams. You kinda have to force MIL to work with us and other teams to get what they want.
We know some of our players value...OG is worth multiple 1sts in a package if your want to get a 3rd team. Hart and Mitch would have value out there. But like I said its all predicated on Giannis forcing his way to where he wants to go.

Could it really be down to Jeff Van Gundy or John Callipari? NBA experience, big enough personal brand to withstand the pressure, no close ties to outside superstars to fuel disruptive rumors, not currently under contract with another team. I suppoose throw Mike Brown on that list, although I could honestly see the Lebron rumors starting very quickly.
Bryant is the play.
I agree that he's a great potential coach. I'm just skeptical they'd hire somebody for his first HC job. This is a HIGH pressure situation and I'm guessing they're going to choose an experienced HC who can withstand the pressure. For better or worse, Thibs' weird form of autism made him impervious to the media and fans. That kind of stability will be very hard to find, which is why I expect the candidate to have many years under his belt. This city now expects NBA Finals runs. Falling short of that would DESTROY a younger coach IMO.

Right.
Giannis/OG/Mikal/Brunson makes more sense wouldn't it?
