Carlisle said in the post game interview that they discussed it during the the challenge time out. He said if they lost the challenge and the OKC did not score, to not call a time out and go for the basket.

If you make the winning shot, the coach looks like a genius. If you miss, the coach gets second guessed for the rest of his career.

If I'm a team like say the Celtics or Nuggets, I'm calling a timeout and drawing up a play for Tatum or Jokic.
In general it feels more advantageous for the defense to get a timeout to set their defense and go over coverages.
I voted no, assuming if the situation was optimal. For me, having a seasoned team like Boston or Denver would have me not call a timeout because I trust them in the flow of the game and as others mentioned, I don't want to give the defense a chance to setup.
If I had a less polished, less seasoned team, then I'm definitely calling a timeout or if I sense the team is struggle to get it to the right person or make the right play.

Depends, and could be correct both ways.
If say you have a "defensive" team like the Rockets and you had the opportunity to take the timeout, you do it everytime because they really don't have the creators to get that good shot with 5 seconds left, all the way to the other end....
Now if you have a Hali or Steph (just two examples, there are others), then you trust those players and the team to make the right play-- the other option is that you call TO and the other team can set their defense-- so you'd rather let them go and run...

Home/road would also factor in. Probably less likely to call timeout on the road.
Game momentum. Did my team just give up a lead and looks shook? Give me a timeout to settle the guys down.
Lots of factors here for a general question.

Haliburton was open and had space to get down the court and get a good shot off. Way better than having OKC set their defense.
If they couldn’t get Hali the ball and/or he had a super tough defender on him like Dort then Carlisle probably calls a timeout.

If it's the player I want taking the last shot with the ball then no, otherwise I'd be inclined to take one.

Rick goes with the flow. He said once Haliburton had the ball in space, he was going to let him go. Had OKC had a ton of defensive pressure stalling things, he would have called a timeout.
It isn’t the first time this postseason he’s had a timeout but instead let Haliburton do his thing.
So yea, depends on the situation.

That depends on whether I have Tyrese Haliburton on my team or not.

It has too many variables but at the end of the day, I wouldn’t want to go vs a set defense… let it ride…

Re: 5 seconds left, do you call a time out or not?
It seems like a case to case situation. I can definitely see it being benefitial and demoralizing for the opposing players, especially if it works out and it's a Playoff series. If it's a player like Haliburton, or f. e. a Chris Paul my trust would be that the player will make the right decision.

Re: 5 seconds left, do you call a time out or not?
If this is in reference to game 1, they got the rebound with 10 seconds, which is significantly different than 5 seconds. I’m calling time pretty much every time with 5 seconds off a defensive rebound in such a close game because of how rushed it would be, but 10 seconds gives a lot more wiggle room if I trust the player, which is what happened with Tyrese.
