To me the most interesting thing is to see the level of player comparison discussions now compared to what was going on in 2008. The nuance and detailed analysis we have now compared to then…this might as well be a discussion for 1980.

Couple of years after this we instituted a "no post padding" rule, partially due to that level of response. Being fair, the use (and availability) of advanced stats was still pretty uneven at this point.

Kobe and Melo would have been a horrendous pairing. Two primary isolation players, one of them a fairly weak playmaker and an awful defender. That fit is terrible. Lebron and Wade had their issues, but they were both very good passers and defenders... and then James adapted his game to post more and shoot better from 3, which helped a lot.
Kobe and Melo would be a selection entirely driven by fan preference for the aesthetic of playground isolation, and little else.
