Maybe it's a Spaniard carry over, or more Spanish than Italian fans in the arena, or CA's more fan engaging personality, or fans just want a 5-setter. Or whatever overlap of the above. But it's clear crowd is pulling for Carlos. Seems to have affected Sinner ever so slightly.
Sinner is a brilliant player and seems like a genuinely nice guy, but also lacking some personality because he has probably spent all his life just playing tennis. Also doesn't help that he had a doping ban that was possibly the only (public) time in sports history which has involved "negotiations" so that the poor player doesn't have to skip any grand slam.
His game is a bit reminiscent of Nola but complete opposite in personality. At least on court. He said he feels nerves but does not show it. It's interesting that Djoker has at times turned people off with his emotional outbursts but Sinner doesn't give fans a lot to attach to either.
Federer was more composed but at least he shouted now and again. We get a raquet shake from Sinner in the biggest points like in less pressure points.
Also, they just said in the broadcast that Sinner has not played beyond a certain length of time. Can't recall if that was in a final or ever, but anyway, the longer this goes the more it feels like Carlos has the edge.
