That's the interesting point for Followill. He's very straight down the line. Like Breen. Even leans a little more to the opponents. Has side gigs afaik with the Texas NFL teams (maybe????). Doesn't have a persona as a homer.

I'm not sure how to evaluate those things as manifestations of state and/or city identities.

Obviously Boston has had historically ridiculously bad people in this role .. Johnny Most down to today.

The Lakers otoh had Chick Hearn, who was the definition of calling it straight.

idk.

Many owners are billionaires. Man billionaires don't care about what others think and don't really have good taste. But some are more attuned to how they and the team appear. I can see the Boston culture loving someone like J Most. But Jeannie is very image conscious. Maybe that's part of it. Also, maybe here and there a competent announcer works his way up to calling games and the front office actually realizes he's good.

It's just sickening how ESPN/ABC have devolved into some of the most useless, self indulgent talking heads who look only to increase their personal ratings and salary. My ESPN faves are of course Breen and Perkins. There's a big drop off that leads to the depths inhabited by SAS and others.

Chick Hearn was from the epoch of Jerry Buss and the show-time Lakers. They didn't need to punch down and magnonimity was the default. But I get the idea. Followill is from the epoch of Cuban. And for whatever one might think about him, his persona is/was as a straight-talker. Ok, so that would align with allowing Followill to call games straight.

As both teams score on back cuts I struggle to remember a time we ever scored on a back cut

Probably not since the first game we played OKC this season and we ran one of the best looking motion offense I’ve seen for 24 mins of the game

I think I finally understand why Doris annoys people

She's neither good nor bad, she's just ordinary and fairly boring

It is rare she says anything truly insightful

Truth is there are far worse announcers than her, but she is just bland and maybe that triggers people

She is definitely not pro-Knicks, but I don't think that's why people don't like her

how can't the NBA reverse that call...they reverse stepping out of bounds before 3's but a goaltend with a guy going through the hoop. Easy quick reversal.

Great response from OKC tonight. Indy still should be happy with a split.

Thunder with a good bounceback. Their team is more talented, but I also think that's part of coaching. You gotta get your guys ready for the next game, especially after you've gotten rocked in G1.

Them forcing Haliburton into 5 TOs is huge. In the first 5 games of our series against Indiana, we forced Hali into 6 turnovers total.

I don't know why so many people hate on OKC. I mean as a Knicks fan why would you even have any disdain towards them since we have no history against them.

OKC made a mistake going completely away from double big in game 1. They even went small (no bigs) a decent amount - including when they blew the lead in the 4th.

Tonight was the opposite. Despite keeping the starting lineup the same they played double big a lot and zero small ball (no bigs) lineups.

You're not wrong about Chick Hearn in general, but he predated the Buss era. I think he started when the team moved from Minneapolis to LA in 1960 or shortly after. He was calling games with Elgin Baylor and Jerry West playing, long before the Showtime era. Jack Kent Cooke was the owner of the 60s and 70s.
There goes my hero. Watch him as he goes.

I don't have anything against Haliburton personally though I found the whole sequence with his dad highly disturbing. I thought he responded very well in that press conference.

That being said, to me he is clearly not a top 20 player. I would likely place him somewhere around 25-30. I don't know if that means he is over- or underrated but he is simply just not that great. He used to be a superb shooter....but ever since last season that has leveled off to him being a good but not great shooter (36-37% from 3). His defense is not good. He is a very good passer and a good shooter and solid scorer. Nothing about his game sticks out as great.
