Minnesota gets their next (Judy) Garland

Post#1 » by ReggiesKnicks » Mon Jun 9, 2025 4:33 am

ATL Out: Onyeka Okongwu, Terrence Mann, #13
ATL In: Rudy Gobert, #31

CLE Out: Darius Garland
CLE In: Terrence Mann, Donte DiVincenzo, Rob Dillingham, #13

MIN Out: Rudy Gobert, Donte DiVincenzo, Rob Dillingham, #31
MIN In: Onyeka Okongwu, Darius Garland

Atlanta trades depth for talent. A previous discussion on this board was that this is in the ballpark of value for Gobert.
Cleveland looks to pivot and focus on building around Mitchell/Mobley/Allen and a handful of defensive-minded guards POA guards in DDV/Mann. Their own KAT-to-New York trade.
Minnesota once again shakes things up with Connelly at the helm, selling both Gobert/Dillingham a year "too early" rather than a year "too late" as Gobert ages and questions surrounding Dillingham's NBA game.

*Can take out #13 and #31 and add #22 instead

Williams and Salaun return nothing.

Dillingham, Clingan, Edey and Holland return a non-lottery 1st.

Sheppard and Sarr return a lottery 1st.

Two playoff-caliber bench guards in DDV/Mann and two 1sts for Garland.

Personally, I'd value Gobert over Garland. So then after that MIN is swapping Donte DiVincenzo, Rob Dillingham, #31 for Okongwu which is obviously a value loss too. So I don't like this for them. I'd need #13 at least coming back to MIN.

But then CLE would need to have a pretty string evaluation of Dillingham to do their end.

That’s some deep knowledge Reggie, to know Judy Garland is from Minnesota!

I didn't know. I just google'd her and was going to make a Garland trade to whichever team was closest to where she was from.

Naz Reid looks likely to leave Minnesota as a Free Agent, so they can't afford to trade Gobert (even though I could see Garland being a good fit on the Wolves)

Coincidentally, there has been some chatter here in Minnesota about Garland, and he would fit next to Ant.

I like this for ATL. Gobert would anchor their suspect defense, and Trae would be able to throw Rudy lobs. And in this trade, while MIN could use Okongwu to replace Rudy, Mann and the pick aren’t great fits in Minnesota, so it’s smart to use them as trade chips here.

There is some debate if MIN could afford to lose Gobert period. Ant could use some help with playmaking and scoring, but his playmaking improved tremendously over the course of this season, so maybe three years of Garland at $42 is a quick fix for a problem that isn’t going to last? Still, MIN may consider a move like this for the “now,” in an effort to get back to the playoffs and make changes to get past OKC.

Finally, I think CLE would demand McDaniels in the trade, and I know MIN is loathe to give him up.

Good trade. Well-designed.

This is terrible for Cle. Mann has lost whatever luster he ahd and ppl now know he's overpaid and JAG. DDV is a fine player, but shouldn't be the best piece in a trade returning all-star Garland.

Too short sighted for Atl as well IMO. This really only benefits Minny

The media is linking him to everyone and their mother... Top FA target etc.

To OP: I like the fit of Rudy with Trae. Very expensive bookends(max contracts at the 1 and 5), but can't deny the PnR potential.

Wolves actually would be saving money in this deal, so that means they should be able to retain Naz and maybe even NAW

No sure how I like this for the Cavs. I think they need to flip some pieces for a Robin/Alfred level guy.

Cleveland passes. The Cavs might be interested in McDaniels+ coming back from Minnesota, but not this.

Nets and Pistons are chasing Reid hard.

They can offer him considerably more coin and playing time and in Detriot's chance, a legit chance to make the finals next season if he signs there

I hope he stays at the Wolves but I reckon he is probably likely to take the bag and take his talents elsewhere

Per Wolves fans, he is close with Ant and actually likes being in MN. I 100% think Gobert is gone (Unless Randle opts out and they let him walk) but either way he is ascending to a starting gig.
Wolves have been in the CF now twice in two years. I don't think the grass is really greener for him on any of the clubs you mentioned. Knicks/Pacers/Cavs are all in tact at the moment (only real variable is Turner re-signing with Indy).

I don’t think cleveland would do this- I think if anything they are looking for a consolidation trade or a 1:1 swap for a better fit. What they don’t need is the $1.00 for a bunch of quarters and dimes trade

In Detroits case, they’d need to renounce Beasley, THJ, and someone else to get 27m in cap to sign Naz. 27 isn’t more than MN can offer and they aren’t a better shot at making the Finals with Naz than the team who made it to two consecutive WCF.

For the Nets, all I’ve seen is random speculation because he’s from NJ and they have the only cap in the league. But if their prize from FA is Naz Reid, they’ve failed at FA.

He’s a nice player and a great dude but there is more value to be squeezed out of that cap.

Also, Jake Fischer reported that many/most feel like Naz will return to MN.

I just don’t feel like “likely to leave” is a fair assessment of the situation.

Thank you. Tading Garland for guys who would be lower on the depth chart than the role players we already have just isn't going to happen. DDV doesn't play ahead of Strus or Hunter. Dillingham and Mann would barely played at all.

We were 0-2 against the Pacers without Garland. We were 1-2 with Garland trying to play on one foot.

Why don't they? This gives them two players who fit extremely well with Mitchell in the back-court, are cost-controlled and a 1st. It gets Cleveland breathing room to make a consolidation trade mid-season or next off-season.

Because they could just keep Garland and have a much better team next season.
