That's usually how firings work. You fire a guy or gal because they're no longer working for whatever reason. Then you search for the new guy or gal. Initiating a hiring process literally is the plan.

It sounds like in this case there was a process to gain full input as to whether Thibs was still working out. You clearly don't like the results of that process but this isn't some unusual thing like firing a coach of a playoff team right before the playoffs, which two teams did this year. That was wild.

It’s not just me though. It’s around the league that feels the same way.

Among the first reactions I heard via representatives from rival teams — once they digested the shock — was the oft-repeated notion that the Knicks have to have a replacement lined up if they were prepared to dump the coach who brought them their first sustained success of the 21st century.

All initial indications, however, suggested that the Knicks do not have a locked-in succession plan.
Which only added to the shock.

That's how some teams operate but that's not how the Knicks have ever operated. Any time we've had a coaching vacancy we've done a search, including when we hired Thibodeau. This is particularly the case because it sounds like the Knicks weren't certain about firing him until they conducted player interviews, meaning they just recently made the determination vs. having benchmarks he had to reach to stay. We weren't conducting a search in the background while he was still coach - which is actually respectful - and we have the whole summer to do it. There are actually a ton of guys out there right now and they're looking into who could become available as well.

Nothing really smells off about the process. It's the firing of Thibs itself that people don't like.

this, the fo at this point has earned the right to run things the way they see fit imo, we haven’t been this stable in a minute. i trust their judgement on whoever they choose as thibs successor

Yeah, I miss Katz. This dude sucks. Send him back to the Pistons.

He lost me when he made a video about why the Knicks won't come back from a 3-1 deficit vs the Pacers. I mean, yeah they probably won't but just be neutral and report tidibits, man.

I'm pretty sure he had us losing the Pistons' series. Listening to him when he talks about the Knicks is such a drag. Like, I'm so sorry you have the worse job in the world. He was a hell of a lot more upbeat when he was talking about the Pistons in years prior. Like, if you don't want to be here, least you can do is stop stirring **** up.

I'm sorry, but WHAT? Two of the last five championship coaches are in this pool as well as another guy (Jenkins) who was consistently bringing his squad to the playoffs under great turmoil and plenty of other guys with experience. Hell, you could even bring Terry Stotts in for a run as this squad is like a souped up version of the Aldridge/Lillard Blazers.

He probably should have said there are no exciting experienced candidates. Around here it seems like its Johnnie Bryant or bust, we dont even have a coaching poll this time that I know of. If they do an extensive search and decide on someone like Mike Brown would fans be happy with that?

JKidd has warts but I would say he is a better overall coach than Thibs and even moreso for our current roster construction.

Mavs are not going to do us any favors with Kidd. I imagine there is still drama there from the whole draft pick saga when the Mavs went full tank mode to screw us over.

He's not if he is even coming. Dallas hasn't given permission to speak to him yet.

Prediction:

Knicks trade the WAS 1st round pick (that will likely turn into two 2nd round picks) for Jason Kidd

The reports that the Mavs will decline the interview request definitely came from them, so it should not be taken at face value. Now it seems very likely that it is a negotiating stance.

Yup.

It's not a no. We haven't made the request, so they haven't denied it.

I would not be surprised if we're engaged in negotiations now.

The only real question in all of this is the Jay Triano hiring to Kidd's staff.

Ehh Cuban was still in charge at the time of this. Totally different ownership in place and an ownership group that does business with Dolan in Vegas. Don’t think it will be as contentious as in the past.

If NBA is involved behind the scenes as a 'facilitator' where a scenario is playing out where Giannis wants NY and wants Kidd as his coach.... It could very well happen.
