Wouldn't be my first choice, but describing him as a bad coach is quite the exaggeration.
How so? Kidd is #103 in coaches by w/l%. There have only been 19 coaches in the history of the NBA that have a lower w/l% and have coached more years. Very few of those coaches have had a Garnett, a Giannis or a Luka on the roster. Kidd has had one in every season. He's not great!
KG on his last legs. Baby versions of Giannis and Luka? C'mon now! Dude helped make Giannis and Luka into superstars. He coached an underwhelming roster to the Finals. Kidd is a good coach. Not great, but good
BRK won 49 games (and Garnett was an all-star in BOS) the season before Kidd took over. BRK added Pierce and Garnett and won 44 games. Yes, they lost Brook Lopez in Dec but they had a losing record (7-10) when he wend down.
Kidd took over a young Bucks team and coached there for four seasons. They won 41, 33, 42 and 23 of 45(a 41.5 win pace) games and finished with a 4-8 (.333) playoff record. Pretty stagnant growth. Bud took over in 2018 and they made a 16 game jump, winning 60, 56 (of 73), 46 (of 72), 51 and 58 games, finishing with a 39-26 (.600) playoff record and winning a title in year three. That's a good coach, despite the PHX debacle!
By the time Kidd took over in DAL, Luka was a two-time all-star that had averaged 28-8-9 the prior season. Baby version? He was a full fledged superstar on day one... but with better leadership, he might not be as entitled as he is today. He pushed Carlisle out because he wanted his own way. The Covid years make this weird but, under Carlisle they went 33-48 (.402), 43-32 (.573) and 42-30 (.583). That is consistent growth. Kidd rode on his coat tails but quickly proved inconsistent, winning 52 (.634), 38 (.463), 50 (.610) and 39 (.476) games. Now the coach Luka didn't want is in the Finals with no superstars (or possibly the "most overrated" superstar), and tied 1-1 with the most stacked team in the NBA.... that's a good coach!
