My issue continues to be that they seem to have done none of this work before firing a good coach. I.e., there was/is no clear successor in place...but we're still still on the clock for "the franchise's biggest decision in a long time."

I firmly believe that Leon, if left alone, would have begun much of the leg work on this search before firing Thibs--i.e., we'd have fired him only after confirming that at least some of our preferred candidates would be available to interview. This whole thing stinks of Dolan, who has a history of acting out of impulse, pursuing the quick fix/shiny new thing without a real plan to make things better.

what would have been the harm of quietly kicking the tires behind the scenes and firing Thibs later in the offseason?

they fired him like a day or two after they were eliminated. that's what makes this look like more Dolan malpractice.
These are the opinions of one lifelong Spurs fan, nothing more

No such thing as quietly kicking the tires behind the scenes with us. It all would have leaked eventually and became more of a shyt show.

Once we determined Thibs was not the guy, it was best to move on. He doesn't deserve to be left hanging either, or in a situation where rumors are flowing around him and he's waiting to get axed.

This was the closest you got to the finals , this 2 games away will be stuck in Knicks fans heads for generations again , and long time after Thibs is gone Knicks fans will question this move

I'm glad you can see the future. 40 years down the line, huh?

If only you could see your own term's future. You may have stopped being a Nets fan long before you did.

You're a Nets fan who jumped on the Pacers bandwagon 3 weeks ago because your franchise hasn't been relevant in the history of the league besides a short spurt in the early 2000's with Jason Kidd.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

Yeah, I had assumed the rush was because we already had a replacement lined up. Otherwise, there was no reason to let Thibs go so quickly--at least partly because we're negotiating now from a position of desperation (another Dolan trademark). Teams know that we have no head coach, with the draft quickly coming up. Why should they help us? Far better to let this team that just made it to the ECF self-destruct....

If we'd quietly kicked those tires behind the scenes first, we might have found a team willing to play ball with some slight incentive. Or, we'd have confirmed sooner that nobody better was available and kept Thibs (while expanding our search looking outside the box for someone clearly with the potential to be better). This said, I've never wanted a retread (Kidd, Malone, etc.) period, so looking outside the box would have been my plan from the start.

why do you need a succession plan? THe knicks came to a decision that Thibs was not the guy..... how disrespectful woul d it be to Thibs if they went out and searched for another coach while he was still hired, that's wild thought process. That's like going out to line up your next girlfriend then going to your current one and being like yeah we are breaking up it makes no sense.

It stinks of Dolan because the past is letting it effect the current state, its all we know as knicks fans Dolan will "mess" it up. But in reality Dolan hasn't been involved since Phil Jacksons hire. Dolan said straight from his mouth on the roommates podcast that he is not involved with basketball that every decision is Leons decision but when you have to fire someone that you just agreed to pay 30 million dollars i would think you would want to be in the room to hear the grievances.

Why do I want a succession plan? Because (as you also put it) it's "the franchise's biggest decision in a long time." This was/is a good--potentially great--roster, and I don't want us to **** it up. I want us to bring in somebody clearly with the potential to improve this team. Reaching out to teams about people like Kidd--let alone getting rejected publicly while doing it--is flat-out embarrassing.

And no, I don't think it's disrespect to quietly begin a search behind the back of somebody I'd just given a guaranteed 30 million dollar extension. That's part of the job, and Thibs is getting paid regardless.

It seems you want to look at it from a negative angle. The knicks are doing due dilignece and checking in on every coach they deem good enough to lead them to the next level, which is where you the asking of current head coaches in udoka, kidd and finch. I would call it bad management if they didnt check in with those guys to see if there was a possibility. Kidd is a really good coach who has had a lot of success with the Mavs, hes had success with stars and hes had success with brunson. He fits the type they should be looking at whether me or you agree with that choice or not.

I cant remember any team that fired a coach witha n immediate succession plan. Warriors fired Mark jackson and spent however long trying to get stan van gundy before he took the detroit job, how logn did it take the cavs to hire atkinson etc. There is always a process and we just have to hope that Leon makes the right decision. History tells me he will.

:(

I'm one of those who wanted us to move on from Thibs--assuming we had the inside track on somebody like Johnnie Bryant, Wright, Udoka, etc.--but I will defend him to the end for being both a good coach and a class act.

Yeah this coach firing reminds me of that time I was at a bangin' party and some dude decided to do a backflip into the pool.

He turned over all the food, splashed all these fine chicks, then realized waaaay too late that he couldn't swim.

So the party basically turned into a rescue mission, so everybody went home.

That's the Knix rn.

Right now after Knicks got denied by Wolves Mavs Rockets and Hawks I gotta say this …..

I Have more respect for a backflip dude than I have for Knicks front office

But seriously it’s soft tampering trying to pry other teams head coaches :nonono:

At this point Knicks are just embarrassing themselves. They fired Thibodeau and now they think they can just go and steal any coach? Was this really their plan A, plan B and plan C all in one?
