i think every coach asked so far has at least made a conference finals if i'm not mistaken. who is left with this criteria ?

they won't ask for spo or kerr. or the 2 guys still coaching now. who else is there ?

Teams are letting Shams know that the Knicks put in a request to interview their coach

on the free agent list, mike brown and taylor jenkins both were there too

Kidd pretty clearly went to the Mavs with demands. High profile assistants and a new contract. He'd probably be hired if they weren't met but they were. They already interviewed him in 2020 and it sounds like he was number 2 or 3 on the list (Udoka). We didn't need to interview those guys. In the end, we were used as a negotiating tool but Kidd news probably made it bigger than the other two because there was a chance to get him.

Personally, I don't have any regrets on Kidd. He's improved as a coach but he's still a snake.

On to the free agent list. It'll take awhile not because we have no idea who we're going to interview from that pool but because we haven't yet done due diligence there. Frankly, I think there are a couple of better options there.

it's fine but just don't sell it to me as they were just gathering information. they were trying to hire those guys and got rebuffed.

i don't even care that much who they hire. well there are a few that would be pretty depressing. let me know when they fix the personnel.

That gathering information due diligence is just Leon leaking stuff to cover his ass to make it look like he has a plan

How do you know that tho? Apparently it happens far more often than we know according to guys like Windy who said as much this week. We just don’t hear about it.

that's not an interview. they talk to people through back channels to gauge interest but they're actually not allowed to talk to them without permission. it's tampering.

if you ask a team for an official interview and they agree they don't come back afterwards. it doesn't happen. you're hiring that guy.

I dunno the difference between back channeling and a formal interview honestly. Like what couldn’t you cover thru back channels that you could in a formal interview?

Kinda semantic-ish, but I dunno… Leon probably wanted to put it out there for whatever reason just like he sent Randle, Wes, and Houston to the playoffs to openly court Brunson and Donovan… he moves a lil different.

Back channel - does coach like his current job? Does he actually want your coaching job?
Interview - scheme, players, how many brinks trucks?

I know .. but you don't think Leon knows this will leak? There has been no intel at all that these coaches are available. So right now I'm just passing this off at due diligence but they have a idea on what direction they're going in. Leon been around this league too long, he know how this goes.

nothing. which is why when you ask for it officially you're really asking to hire him. they don't need to ask ime udoka what his defensive philosophy is after getting permission. they know everything already.

So in regards to teams talking to other teams coaches, it happens thru back channels, but in our case, they went public…

So maybe they went after Udoka, Finch, then Kidd knowing those were their top 3 guys they were willing to hire but knew they had little chance at, put it out publicly they were declined to let the fanbase know they’re trying for top candidates.. all while continuing their process of looking at other candidates, the Jay Wrights, Dan Hurley’s, Johnnie Bryant’s, Mike Malone’s, Coach Bud’s, etc.

Walking and chewing gum at the same time… nothing wrong with that. I just don’t see how it negates them doing proper due diligence.
