Westbrook opting out

Post#1 » by AleksandarN » Fri Jun 13, 2025 4:01 pm

I’m a bit surprised given he just had surgery on his wrist. I doubt anyone will give him more than the vet minimum

Russell Westbrook reportedly is going to test free agency after a successful 2024-25 season with the Denver Nuggets.
NBA insider Marc Stein reported on Friday Westbrook is declining his $3.5 million for the 2025-26 campaign.

He'll probably get another two year deal with the second as a player option, but he's no longer going to command the type of money he once received.

I can’t see a team signing to above a vet minimum deal. He will be coming off of wrist surgery and is 36 yrs old

It can be an agreement with DEN tonre sign for vet min, saves DEN 1M and doesn't cost him anything, huge difference foe a team at the 2nd Apron.
Another option is he got an offer from other team.

That’s true. Hopefully he stays in Denver

I think he'll just sign with Denver.

Though if I'm Denver I'd reconsider.

From my understanding, if he resigns for the veteran minimum again, he will get a slight increase in pay, so it makes sense for him even if he just resigns for that.

I really hope the Nuggets are able to use their taxpayer MLE on someone else, like Bruce Brown, or another bench piece, instead of giving Russ a larger raise. From what I can tell, it seems like there will be few teams with cap space and a lot of players that will either have to resign with their current team under bird rights, or try to get a MLE and the Nuggets should be a very attractive option to players in that MLE range. They are a contender and will give that player a good change to be part of the rotation.

Now, hopefully, Saric gets that offer from overseas, and we can get out of that contract.

Makes no sense to resign for peanuts if winning is all he cares about. That only makes sense if he was on a contender, not a team that hasn't gotten out of the second round in years. Pretty sure he's going to a contender and waiting to see how the dust settles.

I guess two years is technically "years". What team do you think are better positioned to compete for a championship next year than the Nuggets besides the Thunder+Cavs?

He’s gonna sign with Dallas or Milwaukee. Teams that are still trying be good, but are in need of a stopgap PG on the cheap. Fans of those teams will flame me for saying it because they don’t want to believe it (I get it, I wouldn’t want him on my team either), but those are the most logical landing spots for him.

Is this a serious question?

Thunder, Pacers, Knicks, Wolves, Cavs, Celtics. Then you have teams that are on the rise - Rockets, Spurs, Pistons, Magic. Nuggets aren't in a great position here.

For some reason I absolutely see this happening now.

Love to bring him back to OKC except he’s probably going to want PT and this team is stressful enough.

Would rather CP3 if possible.

Russ will still get his retirement signing no matter what.

Yeah, of the two, I think Milwaukee is most likely. I can see Niko making some dumb short-sighted trade, sending a FRP for a Schroder-style stopgap PG.
