I believe Elton Brand had taken over for Bryan Colangelo at that point. Hinke was gone after 2016

I remember for Zhaire Smith, one of those super athletic wings who uncapped defensive potential and +5" wingspan and incredible hops.
That 180 alley oop dunk was impressive, I admit.
These defensive super athletes have such a high bust probability.

Re: Around The NBA : 2024-25 Season
Sam Hinkie had two key attributes -
1) When he tanked, he didn't got halfway. He really tanked.
2) He burnished his reputation by boasting about that fact.
Which encouraged fans who like tanking strategies to idolize him. That Hinkie was a master self-promoter (all hedge-fund managers are, otherwise they wouldn't stay in business) further improved his reputation.
But evidence that he was particularly good at idenitfying talent and forming a cohesive team? Not really there. I won't say that he couldn't have done so, but there's no particularly reason to think that he was better than the people who succeeded him.

Well, that's a hypothetical. We don't know if Hinkie would have made better decisions. I mean, he said that he was a genius, but his record was nothing special.
1) Traded Jrue Holiday for Nerlens Noel and a draft pick that became Elfrid Payton. Bad.
2) Selected Embiid as the #3 pick. Neutral, because that was an obvious choice.
3) Traded Payton for Saric. Good.
4) Traded MCW for a pick that became Mikal Bridges. Good.
5) Selected Okafor as the #3 pick. Crap player, but I will score that as a neutral since that was the consensus choice.
6) Signed TJ McConnell. Hinkie threw about 20 summer signees against the wall and this one stuck. Good.
I mean, whatever. You might love his strategic decision, but his tactic record is sparse. (I left off tons of little deals where he sent nobodies for nobodies.)
Anyway, even if he was a secret genius, Simmons would have gone AWOL and Embiid would have been hurt every playoffs.
Besides, it's still funny. TJ McConnell, of all people.
The idea behind "The Process" is to give yourself as many chances as you can at getting a franchise player and then when you get one you build around him.
That's why there are times when Hinkie drafted players who play the same position. It's also why they traded MCW in his second season (the year after winning ROY).
Of course we have no idea how he'd do if he had more time, but he was fired before Embiid showed that he could be a franchise player. Then Colangelo and Elton Brand made a series of poor decisions that wasted the assets that had he built up over time.
Not every move that Hinkie made were bad ones. You're prime example, TJ McConnell, was one of the good ones. Philly signed him (he wasn't drafted) and he was on their team for 4 years before he went to Indiana (Hinkie was fired in 2016...McConnell went to Indiana in 2019).

Sam Hinkie was fired in 2016 (officially they say he "resigned") and Bridges was drafted in 2018. He had nothing to do with that trade, even though I agree that it was baffling when it happened.

He never had a chance to build a cohesive team. Brand and Colangelo have had numerous opportunites to do so in the NBA and have generally done a bad job.

Refs need to interject and start calling random F1 fouls. Let them play man.
KC: Do you still think you're a championship-caliber team?
Gar: I never said that and correct me if I'm wrong.

It was clearly a flagrant. It’s not like anyone got ejected.

Obi is def playing the best of his career. Fast and quick decisions. Constant motion. Fun to watch him play loose and confident.

remarkably, since the early '80s, no team has won a title at greater than 18-1 odds entering season (mavs, '95 rockets). pacers were 66-1

Am I the only one that hates how OKC is playing defense? They're not pressuring the ball handlers, just lettin them easily get past half court and daigneault didnt have them doin full court pressure in response to indy playing it.

First one on Toppin wasn't in my view.

Re: Around The NBA : 2024-25 Season
Another close and exciting game, I really have enjoyed watching these two teams battle it out! Two critical mathurin mistakes in the last minute, ouch...
I'm kinda sad that the season is almost over, but at least we get two more guaranteed
Question, the camera rarely shows other nba players in the stands, do they not regularly watch the finals?

Exhausted watching that game.
Mathrun giveth, Mathurin taketh away
3 missed free throws and two fouls before the ball was inbounded in the final minute. Woof.
Should he put McConnell in - guys always making something happen and Indiana was cold.

Automatic
@automaticnba
Follow
The OKC Thunder tonight:
- recorded 10 or fewer assists
- committed 15 or more turnovers
- shot less than 20% from three (on at least 10 3pa)
NBA teams were previously 0-82 all time when doing all three in a game before tonight.

Re: Around The NBA : 2024-25 Season
I thought OKC really won it last few minutes when they flattened out and played PnR with Shai and JWill, forcing Nesmith on Shai.

Re: Around The NBA : 2024-25 Season
The wild thing about this series is that OKC is so good that they are still going to win it despite playing like crap almost every game.
Indy had to win last night. And in my opinion probably had to win game 5 too. And you could tell the fans knew it.
We’ll see. This Indy team has been so much fun. This has been an incredible postseason in general. But I expect OKC to take the next 2 as well, convincingly.
