Ya to me a lot of the J.Dub criticism is just fans not understanding defensive value.

He's the opposite of Baker/Coleman/Randle in that those are classic guys who are talented offensive players who's impact on winning was questionable looking back. J.Dub is the opposite. We're not sure how far his scoring game might go, but we know for a fact that he's an absolutely elite defender and a master of the little things.

He's closer to Scottie Pippen than he is Coleman. Not saying he's on Pippen's level at this point, but this is kind of like what Pippen was: a productive but non-resilient scoring threat who dominated on defense and as a playmaker. Scottie was a much much better athlete, to be real about the comp.

I'm not comparing him to those guys to say they are similar in playing style; I'm saying that their impact on the game, the zeitgeist, stardom are all similar. All those guys I listed made multiple All-NBA teams but nobody remembers them as star players or as ever having a real important impact on the game, and I think the same will be the case for Jalen Williams. The first two guys I mentioned earlier were Luol Deng and Danny Granger; neither made any All-NBA teams but both are more similar to the Jalen Williams archetype as strong defensive minded forwards.

I just think the guy is a bit overrated because he's on a team with the MVP that won a lot of games.

point is "star" is a trash category bro, give it up
all it matters is impact and you as a pacers fan should know about that the most since you have haliburton, a high impact player (top 6 xrapm in 2025) that you would never know because he's not enough of a nuclear scoring force to warrant "star" label if he's team is not winning enough.

except those guys are levels and levels and levels beneath jdub's impact as defensive player.

as a 6'6" wing jdub has performed in the company of the elite rim protectors in the league in that category, while being one of the league's premier perimeter defender.

it's not like "oh he can even play defense". this is a dude that when the thunder were down their three centers of the roster, he anchored the defense as a 6'6" center to FANTASTIC results. that's the level of a player.

and it's not even like jdub isn't a good scorer. he's a good scorer. he just isn't a good pg. playing next to two point guards in the roster (sga and giddey) he was a consistent 20 ppg 60ts% guy with low turnover rate. after the giddey trade he has to play pg for stretchtes which he's not good at all (yet). a square plug on a round hole that manages to be still above average.

Looking forward on Jdub's performance tonight. It seems like he crack under pressure and excel against easy opponents.

Jdub in easy series(9 games)
22.7 ppg, 59.5 TS%

Jdub in challenging series(9 games)
17.7 ppg, 47.7 TS%

-22% ppg drop
-20% TS% drop

Even last year's playoffs it's the same struggle

2018 1st round vs. Pelicans
21.3 ppg, 59.4 TS%

2018 semifinals vs. Mavericks
17.0 ppg, 50.8 TS%

-20% ppg drop
-15% TS% drop

Hat tip. Stepped up in the biggest game of his life (so far), with the Pacers at their home playing their asses off on defense, and needing to take a lot of ball-handling duties to relieve SGA.

Always love to see this kind of thread when a player's just going off.

Anyway, he's a third-year player. How many players with this much experience never have a bad game(impetus for why this thread was made)?

He is only in his third year putting up these performances. How many players in the league can drop 40pts in a playoff game let alone the nba finals? Hopefully this dispells any doubts people had of him.

Still rather have a guy like him than Westbrook or Harden. OKC is blessed to have him.

Jdub about to be a champion. How many nba players have scored 40 in a finals game anyway?

There have been valid criticisms of Dub's offense but the one thing about him is he is a fast learner and figures out his problems quickly. He is improving series over series at an incredible pace.

Man is as good or better than peak Klay Thompson as a #2. Legendary stuff this Finals.

Yep, he's going to be scary by year 5 or 6 and it won't even be his prime

He is extremely talented and could be the #1 option for quite a few non contenders pretty easily. Great feel for the game and skill set.

Coward has the exact same measurements and a similar game. They'll probably draft him at 15 too, if SA doesn't.

Portland will swing on Demin or Essengue is he's there and miss out AGAIN.

If he's a guy OKC or SA would draft, then YOU SNAKE him. I swear scouts should study the types of player they look for and beat them to it.
