Possible Porzingis extension in 2026/2027?

Im conflicted on KP. The 2023-24 starting lineup was awesome. But KP lineups were not great this year. JT has awesome chemistry with basically every, single big ever but the KP + JT chemistry is give-and-take. And in Joe's system, the sets that end in feeding KP in the post mismatch can just become rote and sap all the energy from the team.
But when KP is clicking, it's elite space, elite rim protection... And he's a fun Celtic and game 1 against the Mavs is legend stuff...
I am conflicted. Ultimately, I think it's time to move on from KP for a different big man.

Re: 2025 Offseason Trade and Free Agency Thread (Wow this is fun!)
For Boston ownership, I think it comes down to a simple question:
Does Boston want to move KP, Holiday and maybe Howser
or
Does Boston want to move Brown.
I think Boston can get off the 2nd apron and have enough to squeak by in signing its free agents and draft picks while making a minimal improvement from the trades.
vs
Get below the 2nd apron, pick up some decant returns and have enough to resign its free agents and draft picks.
Hard question to answer, but the fact that Brown makes so much, we possibly could take back a couple decent players for an avg of 10 to 12 mil each and still cut close to 30 mil off the salary.

As for your main point, I look at it as get your players when you can. If you can get a long term guy now as part of the moves this summer, do it. I haven't seen many people pay picks for WCJ, but he's borderline as far as being a future title and on a good extension, so a 2nd or something isn't out of the realm. I have (myself) sent a 1st for Black. But, I view him as a possible key long term guy, and both those scenarios I am ducking the tax.
Usually it's people like Mann or Rui or Marshall, without sending picks and ducking the 2nd apron but not the tax. Those guys can later be flipped just the same as Vanderbilt and Klay. But, I agree if you're doing that, you might as well duck the tax too. If you can do it without attaching picks.
I think mainly we just disagree on what Jrue can return - you're a tad more pessimistic due to the financials, and may very well be right. But, I think teams will view him as positive to at very worst neutral. Win now teams are willing to say "we can figure that out later" with the last year of a contract. Jrue will be worth his next 2 years' money, or darn close to it, so it's just not that bad a deal, imo.
hugepatsfan wrote:Since we ended last year over the 2nd apron, our 2032 pick is now frozen. We cannot trade it. If we end this year over the 2nd apron, it will automatically be moved to the end of the 2032 1st round, no matter our record. Also if we stay over the 2nd apron this year, our 2033 pick gets frozen again next year.
In any of these financially motivated trades, you have to factor those apron penalties. Any combination of trades that gets us below the 2nd apron in addition to whatever we get from the trades themselves, automatically ALSO includes for us:
1) the ability to trade our 2032 pick next year
2) the removal of an automatic pick swap to #30 on our 2032 pick
3) the ability to trade our 2033 pick next year
There's also the financial aspect of not the 2nd apron but the tax. We have to go under for 2 years to reset repeater rates. Each year ownership is going to give Stevens a budget. If you're spending repeater rates, that budget will translate to substantially less salary than a non repeater team. It's just math. By staying over the tax, Stevens will have to build a championship team with substantially less ability to add salary because of fitting the related tax into the budget.
So many people are concerned about how we're going to build a title contending team around Tatum when he's back if we sell off Jrue/KP/Hauser for savings. The thing for me is that even the most optimistic trades I've seen as far as guys coming back, while decent players, are NOT going to be the championship core around Tatum/Brown/White. I still think in the future we're going to need to trade those players for upgrades but if we stay in the tax for them we have less ability to take back money and extend those guys and if it's over the 2nd apron then less/worse picks to attach to them.
We traded Theis/Nesmith/pick for Brogdon then Brogdon/RWIlliams/pick for Jrue to get a title. That's the roadmap. And we still went to the finals that year Theis was here! I wouldn't be afraid if guys like Jared Vanderbilt, Klay Thompson, etc. If it means you get to reset your spending power, keep all of your assets, and maybe even get some small stuff back as opposed to giving that up to get some PJ Washington/WCJ type players instead, I think the former puts us in better position to make the trades we'll need to build a title team around Tatum again. Because in the latter you'll still need to move those guys in the future but less assets to do so.
I'm not saying tear it all down and tank, but if they prioritize savings I think they can get under the tax by dealing off KP/Jrue/Hauser and keeping our 3 best players + Pritchard and having tons of future flexibility.

If they can get KP on a 3/39 deal he’s probably staying.

KD could choose to not report to Minnesota and force the Suns hand.

Not much but I don’t think he’s landing a lot at this point anyways.
The do have just run of the mill salary filler which I think is something Phoenix wants and needs more than most since they can’t tank but also aren’t good. So it fits in that sense.

Miami is the most logical destination for KD.

Would they still have to move Hauser to be able to keep KP?
If we moveJrue and actually get some picks vs moving Jrue having to give up some of our assets, is a definite home run.
Brad stevens maze surprise, but I think the answer is somewhere in the middle.
The Jrue to Brooklyn thing isn’t super likely obviously but it’s more likely than Giannis staying in Milwaukee and competing for a title imo. That roster is atrocious and will battle for the play-in.

Miami has draft picks and decent role players. That's about the best Phoenix will do for the 37 year-old KD.
The Knicks would love to do KD even up for Towns, but the Knicks have no draft picks to offer.

Interesting. Denver is the betting odds favorite to land Holiday.

Not realistic IMO.
Nugs already at 200m for next season.
The path to getting Jrue is using MPJ as trade chip.
But MPJ is very expensive and not very high IQ bball player.

MPJ would need to go to a 3rd team like Brooklyn...

If we're dealing with the Nuggets, it should be for Jokic. Before he decides he's done with basketball. Can we trade Tillman + our 2025 1st for him?

with the explosion of gambling there is a lot of dumb money placing bets that is basically gambling junkies chasing dopamine hits.
you'd think if money is pouring into Denver as Jrue's trade destination, that somebody must have inside info ... but then remember that Celts were betting favorites to land Ben Simmons before the trade deadline until it was revealed that it was literally impossible for Celts to acquire him under the CBA rules.
https://heavy.com/sports/nba/boston-celtics/boston-celtics-named-favorites-to-land-177-million-forward-in-trade-or-buyout/
I could be off, but I would not expect Jrue to Denver. More so, we're at peak stupidity of bettors throwing money away

Yeah I looked at the money there and it’s really tough for them to get in that market unless they want to move Aaron Gordon somehow.
