They could get Vassell and 14

That isn't better than Randle

Randle probably doesn't have as much value as #14 and Vassell to be honest. Randle's flaws aside, he could be a free agent and is 31 next season. I'm not too worried about his health, but his impact on winning in a few years might be below Vassell & whoever you take at 14. Then factor in what you have to pay him, and it seems like a long shot that he's worth more.

I really think you have to be high on Vassell and his contract (which I don’t think the general consensus is), and really low on Randle, to think that.

Randle is two time All-NBA, three time All Star, and looked every bit that part in the last two months of the regular season, PLUS he was the best player on the Wolves in the first two playoff series. Vassell is Vassell, and the expected value of the #14 pick is no star.

For the record, I think most anywhere Randle goes, he’s going to extend and lock in his money,

Look Randle’s great, he just isn’t much of a fit on the Spurs IMO. They’re going to want the ball in the hands of their guards and Wemby. Maybe if he decided he would take a pay cut to lead the bench unit, but who are we kidding.

Everyone wants to rip on Vassell because his + / - was bad last year I think? He had a weird year for sure. Missed the offseason and a bunch of the early season when wemby was healthy, took some time to get back, had a weird slump month, etc.

But he’s a talented young player at the age when a lot of guards and wings make major leaps. He’s the same age and has similar career numbers to Trey Murphy, even if the progression hasn’t been linear and the advanced metrics aren’t as good.

He can certainly be had in a trade, and maybe he is who he is, but I don’t think the Spurs are in as much of a hurry to “dump” him as everyone else seems to be.

I agree the spurs should add some vets too. I prefer Porzingis to Randle because of his shooting next to wemby and how big an impact he would have in the non-wemby minutes, on both offense and defense. Also like Smart, even if guard isn’t a need. The finals clearly show a guard heavy rotation can work, particularly full of versatile defenders like smart and castle (and maybe Vassell finally gets there on that end). Each will cost less than this, and maybe both.

Vassell +/- has always been bad to mediocre
He can't create off-the dribble and isn't a consistent shooter
He isn't a good defender
Ultimately all of his player profile is mediocre.

He shoots a decent percentage on a large volume of 3s, has always had solid TS%, very good assist to turnover ratio, has the tools to be a good defender. A lot of young players on bad teams have mediocre or bad + /- like Randle his first few years
