BREAKING: Magic acquire Desmond Bane (KCP, Cole + 4 1st Round Picks + 1 1st Round Pick Swap)

I’m seeing a lot of posts about how “now we need a true PG”.

Our leadership seems to be big believers in position-less basketball. Yes, we need guys to run the offense and facilitate, but does that have to be the classical one guy job with a specialized title?

With that in mind, Bane is clear upgrade to the roster as a playmaker. While shooting was the obvious need, his all around game, including playmaking, was surely what put him at the top of their target list.

I think this is a good trade. Bane is a really good player and you'd be happy to hit on a guy like him over the course of four draft picks. I don't think it's a panic move. We're trying to win and we traded accumulated assets for a legitimate talent in his prime. I'm not saying it's the best trade ever made and the best value ever gotten in a trade. But I think it's a good trade for us.

The players we traded were salary filler. KCP and Cole were awful last year.

2025 pick - no big deal, we still have 25
2026 pick - this is the gem of the deal, probably a top 10 pick
2028 pick - will likely not be a lottery pick
2030 pick - will likely not be a lottery pick

For one of the best SG in the league. This is a great deal. GREAT. Finally Weltman.

This is more or less how I think about it. People saying we traded “two decent players” + 4 firsts are delusional imo.

"TOP 8 " DOES NOT MEAN SUNS KEEP PICK IF IT'S TOP 8, TOP 8 IS REFERENCE FOR WIZARDS PART OF A DEAL AS THEY DON'T "OWN" 2026 PICK, IT GOES TO KNICKS IF IT FALL FROM THAT TOP 8 PROTECTION.

But Wizards just won 18 games and are least talented nba team, so their part of the deal is going anywhere.

The Wizards have the right to swap with the Suns first and THAT swap is "top 8 protected" because the Wizards owe the Knicks a pick.

However, it's highly likely the Wizards will be worse than the Suns which will make their swap not matter.

The Magic, after the Wizards have either swapped OR THEIR SWAP DID NOT CONVEY, have the right to swap with the Suns unprotected.

TOP 8 PICK IS NOT REFERD TO SUNS PROTECTION.

Top 8 is reference to Wizards part of the deal, as they don't own 2026 pick, it goes to Knicks if it falls outside protection of top 8.

If in some scenario Suns win lottery, and Wizards have 9th pick, in past Magic, now Grizzlies will have ability to swap pick and have 1st overall pick.

Suns have no ability to control pick swaps nor any protection on it.

This is why whole media is refering to our trade as 4 UNPROTECTED PICKS.

2026- unprotected ( if WIzards are involved pick can't only be 1# pick, but can be 2-29, if Wizards lose pick it can be 1-29 pick)
2028- unprotected
2030 - unprotected
2027- top 2 protected pick swap ( meaning, pick is unprotected if it falls between 3-29 )

Like everyone else I’m not crazy about the picks, but I like the players swapped. Got rid of dead weight replacing KCP with Bane is a win. I’d like to think the team isn’t done dealing.

We get a bit younger as Bane fits the timeline much better than KCP.
We no longer live and die by Cole’s inconsistent play.

The past Magic acquisition to compare this to is the Rashard Lewis sign-and-trade. It was viewed as a huge overpay, but he went on to be a key part of a contending core for years.

They could now try to go for an upgrade at starting C or focus on bench depth. A true PG off the bench would be great.

That means it’s a legitimate big swing trade - if the reactions were more muted then it would be just another rearranging the deck chairs type thing

Well his averages over the past 4 years (since he became a full time starter) are 20/5/4..........yeah ill assume those go down considering hes now the 3rd or 4th option behind 2 guys who both averaged over 24ppg last year, thats to be expected

What assets though???? They gave up salary filler and a few picks that are mostly gonna be in the 20s. The only thing that may actually pan out for Memphis is that pick swap in 26.

Like it's really not bad for an all star caliber player in his prime.

You don't get superstars for these packages anymore.
