For places that have both an NFL and NBA team, how many of those places would you say care more about the NBA team?

I'm Boston born and raised and still reside here - Patriots will always be bigger than the Celtics no matter how **** the Pats are doing.

Suns over Cardinals without a doubt. I say this as an AZ native who has seen and lived through all the highs and lows of each team.

Suns are a home grown product. That makes a difference. And while the Cards made it interesting in their near win at the Super Bowl, it still pales to the Barkley era Suns NBA Finals run or even the more recent occurrence.

What about Pacers and Colts? Saw that mentioned. Indiana loves basketball…but maybe that’s more because of the high school and college hoops scene in addition to the Pacers, and the Colts are still bigger?

I would say the Red Sox lap the Celtics quite easily as well. NFL is king in whatever city they’re in and I would say the MLB teams also have a larger following in cities they share with the NBA with maybe the Lakers having the ability to draw even with the Dodgers but I don’t know.

NFL and MLB focus on teams and tradition while the NBA is a shorter attention span league hitching their wagon on whichever “star” is popular at the moment along with their off court shenanigans and forecasting which teams they’re gonna hop to next. Guess which is the more stable business model long term?

If someone tries telling you the Wolves are bigger than the Vikings in Minnesota, they're lying to you.

I think you can easily place the Wolves behind the Vikings, Wild, and Twins (in that order). Obviously part of this is the Wolves historical (lack of) success and the popularity of the NFL but the Vikes, Wild, and Twins have cultural and historical roots that aren't available to the Wolves.

Perfect! That's what I was trying to say on my post earlier. In regards to the casual fans or a portion of NBA fans.
Compared to NFL (and MLB and NHL) fans, who are more loyal/diehards and more team oriented, stronger regional ties.

You stated it in more detail. Thanks

Exactly. The only reason that ESPN/FS1 think the NBA is leaps and bounds more popular than MLB is because MLB is no longer a TV sport or ratings draw with the modern sports fan's attention span. MLB is still very strong regionally and also cause of today's cultural climate a lot of people depending on the region now take pride in not caring about or watching the NBA.

I personally pick the Pacers over the Colts. I like pro basketball more than pro football. Not really sure about the entire City/State though.

The Reggie years the Pacers were huge, but no rings. The Peyton/Colts years were mega huge. The Colts had the best record in the NFL for about 10-12 year stretch, but only had 1 superbowl win. The last 2 years it's been all Pacers.

The NFL is so huge in all of America though. I really don't know. It's pretty close between the two.

In the US? I dunno.
As a global franchise? I can only guess pretty much all of them, besides NBA as a League itself.

I'm from Barcelona. We had a quite decent -relatively speaking- American football team.

Still, in Europe the people following NFL or even just the Superbowl is below niche.

NBA is huge and growing strong every year, specially since LeaguePass.

Peyton Manning had a big impact in Indiana with a bunch of people naming their kids after him. He definitely turned the tide for the Colts and football in general. I honestly think it's a toss-up. Both teams have great owners, Simon (NY) and Irsay (Chicago), who are beyond loyal to Indiana.

Yes, that makes sense.
The NBA is a global sport and has a huge following outside the US. Very popular.

NFL is not as global outside the US, but does have a good following outside the US. Just not as huge as the NBA. The NFL is very Americanized I think that may be why? But American football is growing in Europe in the past. The UK loves the Jacksonville Jaguars, they play a game or 2 in the UK every season lol.
Europeans are more into original football (soccer) tho.

Eagles over Sixers for sure.

But which cities/states actually care more about their NBA team than their NFL counterpart?

A few that come to mind for me (and are probably still arguable):

-Celtics over Patriots
-Bulls over Bears (maybe more so during the 90s, probably not so much now)
-Lakers over Rams/Chargers
-Knicks over Giants/Jets

Which others?

I've seen some replies that I disagree with and I think it's important to note for all who don't know:

NYC is a basketball town.

One thing I think is noteworthy:

The Knicks and Rangers play in Manhattan
The Yankees play in the Bronx
The Nets play in Brooklyn
The Mets plays in Queens
The Islanders play in Long Island
The Giants and Jets play in New Jersey

Exactly what that means to a modern New Yorker, I’ll let them speak to, but Manhattan was the Mecca of basketball before the Knicks existed.

I think there are more Raider fans than Rams or Chargers fans in LA. Many Cowboy fans for whatever reason too

Before the Rams returned I’d say USC was the top football fanbase, but Raiders were tops among the pros.

With the return of the Rams and their subsequent contention and Super Bowl win, definitely Rams over Raiders.

Agreed that they are all below Dodgers and Lakers.

giants are massive. season tkts are like gold, they are "inherited"

i'd be interested to hear about the dodger - laker dynamic though. the lakers are global but the dodgers have a very DEEEEP fanbase

I would say Lakers are bigger than Dodgers (symbolized by Magic Johnson literally being face of Dodger ownership group), but there’s a split that’s noteworthy:

I would say that our Latine community is Dodger-first, and our Asian community is debatable. As far as I can tell, Fernando Valenzuela and Hideo Nomo were huge on this front, and of course now they have Shohei.

Yeah, the Bruins may even be ahead of the Celtics. It's New England and hockey is huge up here. Though the Bruins suck right now, so it's probably the Celtics atm. Maybe in the 80's the Celtics were bigger than the Patriots. Some guy named Brady changed all of that. And the Red Sox are closer to the Patriots than the Celtics are to the Red Sox. Bruins and Celtics flip flop depending on if they are good or bad.

As for the topic, the few places I can think of where basketball is huge... there is more interest in the college teams than the NBA teams. Duke, UNC are bigger in North Carolina than the Hornets. I'm not from North Carolina so I can't tell you if fans care more about the Panters or UNC/Duke but I guess it's pretty close.

The Pats and Cs are equal at worst and a slight Pats bias at best

Lakers and Knicks both run their respective cities.

I’d put the Heat above the Dolphins. There’s also an argument for the Rockets ahead of the Texans.

Truthfully, some might say this is a stretch, I’d put the Warriors over the 9ers for SF.

The final one is the Suns over the abysmal Arizona Cardinals

You didn't ask me but being from New England i think it's
1a. Patriots (Patriots are 1a, so you could call them 1 if you wanted)
1b. Redsox
then there is a sizeable drop to the Celtics/Bruins who are basically tied and it depends on how they are doing. The Celtics are probably more popular atm because the Bruins weren't very good this year but hockey is very popular in New England for obvious reasons.
