there’s no goddamn way that’s enough lol

we’re giving up basically every first we can manage and pick swaps if we want JJJ

Depends on what the cost is. I agree, it probably isn't going to be a good deal, and I wouldn't do the deal you mentioned either.

That said, JJJ is a perfect center complement to Giddey which is going to be hard to find. If you could do one of our expiring deals + #12 + future 1st unprotected for JJJ then I could see us doing that as a avoid a rebuild type trade and wouldn't totally hate it given our present position.

That said, to your point, probably going to be too expensive to make sense.
You can certainly wait around until next season to blow some of that earned "flexibility" CAP, that is of course if he is available.

He's 25 and a franchise cornerstone. I don't really get why he'd be available regardless of what happened with Bane.

I'm sure you won't get him next year either. Just not sure what you're going to do if you give up three firsts for JJJ. Then what? How good is a JJJ, Matas, Coby, Giddey core? Like 45 wins? Then you also have no impending financial flexibility and are out two more future 1sts?

This is really the AK paradox. He's positioned the Bulls so poorly that starting a true rebuild feels hopeless because we're so far away and can't juice the rebuild with extra assets, but any avenue towards trying to win now peaks out at 1st round exit.

if memphis is looking to retool instead of rebuild, does coby make sense as a target for them now?

The man can't rebound and he fouls like KAT. Besides they did this deal to free up some extra cash for him.

The Bane deal wasn't about dumping assets for a rebuild

The Bulls are in no position to make a consolidation trade (for an established star). I’d look at long-shot free agency and buy-low players, despite the low odds of succeeding. This just means they need to draft very well, until making a big move.

JJJ was an interesting target when that DPOY award was a strong possibility. That would’ve made his 5Y extension a colossal number. But I feel like MEM will either agree to his regular max, or take the top bid.

I think mem is just positioning themselves to trade for a star.

Also no to JJJ. I hate big men who are over 6'11 that grab less than 5 rebounds

Remember when we complained about Patrick Williams rebounding well JJJ is worse. I can still see him walking this summer for nothing at least Memphis protected themselves from it.

If the Bulls do, you would be complaining to much to ever hear it.

NBA fan logic we need to trade one of two best players because (Player X) one needs to shine more.

I don't see JJJ or Morant going anywhere. They were always going to trade one so they could keep the other two. If they're not confident on resigning JJJ maybe they look at offers at the deadline.

I think the fact that he's due a raise next year may rule him out, they just traded Bane who was better than Coby and on somewhat decent contract.

Let's take a chance on JJJ if he's available. Regardless for his lack of rebounding, he would be our best defensive player here and immediately becomes our defensive anchor.

MissileMike wrote:Four first round picks and a swap is too steep of a price to pay for Bane. JJJ would probably cost more.

Half those picks were the cost of dumping KCP, guy's getting 20 million a year with a player option to play like a G leaguer. If you think of it as two picks and a swap for Bane it's a lot more reasonable.

Personally I think the Grizzlies just realized you can't have a non-superstar SG on a max deal in the new CBA and got an offer too good to turn down, they aren't going to blow it up.

The potential prize in the Bane return is that one weirdo 2026 pick. If I'm reading this not-great explanation correctly, it is the best of CHA/WAS/PHO/ORL, and three of those teams have a chance to be bad. https://www.opencourt-basketball.com/2025/06/16/the-suns-2026-first-round-pick-in-the-desmond-bane-trade-a-masterclass-in-nba-draft-chaos/

The other picks are likely to be a bunch of Julian Phillipses, but you never know - dart throws, etc.

I am really not sure what this signals for MEM. It could mean they want to move JJJ. But it also could just mean they wanted to balance their cap sheet, and they have some faith in people like Scottie Pippen Jr., GG Jackson, etc. to fill gaps at lower prices. I'm coming around on the latter, especially due to their reported previous interest in Franz.
