If ORL can stay healthy and get a serviceable pg this might be a very good year.

We nailed the fit with Bane: elite shooting and playmaking at a position of need, even if it cost a lot. Most analysts gave us a B or B+, saying we gave up real value but addressed our biggest weakness. Memphis may have won on pure value, but we raised our ceiling in a way they didn’t. I like it. The only concern is that we end up losing additional value due to the impending cap crunch but we shall see.

People, draft picks hit and miss

The Magic are in a rare position to acquire a guy like Bane abd we made it happen, Bane doesn't want to be traded to a team that doesn't have a real shot to do something.

Lots of teams fail to create a championship window in the first place.

The Magic created the window and we effectively used our amassed assets appropriately to enhance our chances of success by getting Bane.

This trade wasn't some conspiracy - it was just a GM wanting AD bad enough where in most people's eyes he overpaid by a long shot to get him.

That is $207.8M.

Not that they will be anywhere close to that. Just something to keep in mind.

Ok so can you break this down for how that effects us the rest of the summer if and when they decide to make more moves?

Another side effect of this move is that it forces mose to be creative offensively.... Bane isn't someone you can just KCP in the corner

It just means nba does not allow you to take more salary pass that limit.
If we use MLE we will be hard capped at first apron.

The trade must already be complete. They've announced it on the Magic's social media. We could see an introduction press conference tomorrow.

No, they only had one pick, but they could've swapped it.

Our core four will be expensive but... it's actually probably sustainable all things considered.

In 2026-27 they'll cost ~96.7% (Paolo at 30%) and then declines each season after that. This season 9 teams were right around this level of allocation to their top 4.

Expensive? Yes.
Doable? Yes.

PHX 120.0%
MIL 108.3%
DEN 104.0%
PHI 102.4%
BOS 102.0%
MIN 101.1%
MIA 97.9%
NOP 96.5%
NYK 95.4%

I think Memphis owns our own pick AND owns the possible swap w/ PHX which means they could possibly have x2 FRP in 2026 (acquired from us).

Please someone correct me if I’m wrong,

Ohhh this makes more sense.

Orlando originally only had swap rights (technically one pick) and could have swapped their own pick with PHX if they so chose.

Memphis now owns that right.

Man…the more I look, the more I’m seeing that Bane is a much more complete player than I realized. His playmaking, driving & finishing are far more advanced and efficient than I assumed. Take a look at Josh Cohen’s video on YouTube…he’s much more than just a spot up 3&D guy. Superb advanced analytics offensively.

Caleb, TdS, maybe even Jett might really emerge as the shot quality improves…lots of draft equity makes me think that Weltman really targeted Bane as a truly suitable piece and did what it took to get him. It will be interesting to see the margin follow up moves coming.

My only fear is a lack of coaching creativity diminishes Bane and Suggs into spot up spectators.

LFG!

The reality is, the market has changed. 1st round picks were probably overvalued in the past compared to proven players. I mean, you employ people whose specific job is to scour the globe and scout guys many years in advance using (supposed) firsthand expertise and state-of-the-art metrics. And in theory, that should produce a good player with a draft pick. But a lot of times it doesn't. Even the best teams at it don't hit every time, especially the lower you go in the first round. I think the market has just adjusted to the very real fact that a mid-to-late first round pick is equal to maybe .5 of a real player. They're being seen as cheap bodies more than anything. And even if every part of my analysis just now is wrong, the result is still the same, because the market had already been set. We weren't the ones that went out there first and started throwing them around like candy. We won't be the last either.
11/18/2017 - I have officially disowned Nikola Vucevic and branded him a loser.

- Skal Labissiere was my guy in 2016 pre-trade. Whoops, but I still believe.
- Malik Monk was my guy in 2017. Whoops(?)
- Mo Bamba was my guy in 2018. TBD.
