The unprotected picks are going to be at the bottom of the first round and with not many roster spots makes it a great trade. Look at it from Memphis' point of view they only traded him because they're going to try and retool/rebuild. I love the trade keeps with the toughness theme.. but the team needed the shooting desperately.. the volume 3pt shooting specifically.

Durable how?
I love the swing i dont love that it's for a player that has missed almost 100 games in the past 3 years...

Its funny you post this image. This is probably the calibre of players the four picks we gave up will turn into. Not a bad deal when you think of it like that.

Sure, if we assume each FRP and the swap would be the caliber of RJ Hampton and James Ennis. But that’s not a fair assumption.

I will say, if Weltman is making the picks, it likely would be. Memphis has an excellent draft scouting team.

That’s the worst part. The price tag was much higher than it needed to be for Weltman to free the franchise from that multi-million dollar brain fart we affectionately know refer to as KCP.

Imagine having the transmission of your overpriced “buy here, pay here” 2002 BMW 325i with 3 tinted windows fall out. Car was worth 2500 but hey, BMW, right? So you finance it for 7k. To replace it, you have to roll all that negative equity into a new loan for a nice, reliable car. So you end up with a decent set of wheels but you paid almost twice what it was worth because of the stupid decision you made a year ago. That’s this trade.

It is what it is. Teams miss on signings every single year. We swung and missed on KCP. Unlike some teams, we were able to move on from that awful contract. A toxic contract like that can freeze your roster flexibility and thereby hurting Paolo and Franz. KCP was a sh*t fit next to our star young core. Im just glad he is off the team. Complete negative trade asset who is nothing more then a washed version of himself. Good vet, but not worth 21mil per season.

The fact that we all agree KCP was a disaster does not mitigate the impact it had.

We’re out of marketable assets now and highly leveraged. This group we have is going to have to win a title as constructed; give or take a few peripheral additions.

If Paolo and Franz can't get it done with Bane and Suggs, it's Paolo's and Franz' fault for not improving enough.

So the upshot is, the move works because Weltman making the picks gives them an inherent vice; however, in the control of a superior practitioner, they have a higher value.

I don’t disagree. So why is Weltman still here?

Per b-ball index he finished the year with the same D-LEBRON as Tyrese Haliburton.

Basically a neutral/average defender, not a liability and can hold his own but not a + defender.

Better than guards like CP3/Edwards/Mitchell/Cunningham/Fox

He’s not a “bad” defender statistically, people exaggerate his lack of length.

I would put any money in Mosleys system he will become a + defender.

Thanks. Anthony Edwards grades out worse defensively than Haliburton? I'm surprised by that.

They are banking on (as they've always been) Paolo and Franz being their guys. It's the direction they've picked since drafting. Their assets will be some of Suggs/AB/Franz/Paolo/Bane if it doesn't work out lol. We still have stuff it'll just cost swapping of players rather than picks.

Yes, not by much but worse.

I’m actually surprised seeing Luka above Haliburton and similar defensively to Nembhard. Another guard that is often perceived as a liability, but he’s actually came a long way in that regard (Doncic).

For 4 x picks in the 20s, youd be lucky to come away with RJ Hampton and WCJ.

Anyone outside Paolo and Franz is a marketable asset if this doesn't work 3 years down.

Spot on from Windy, and exactly the point i was making in my post earlier. KCP and Cole are 35million per year in dead salary, and we now consolidated that into an allstar calibre starter.

Bane is our starting ‘point guard’ now.

If you view Bane as the Magic’s starting ‘point guard’, with Suggs becoming more of the ‘combo guard’ he should be, that’s the Jeff Weltman backcourt vision.

Bane has more on-ball reps over the past 2-3 years than the average viewer realizes.

Both Paolo and Franz will be just entering their prime when the last pick is owed, please keep that in mind.

Random, but barring something crazy. Bane dethrones Isaac as the highest paid Magic player for this season.

Next season it should be Franz.

Not if Paolo makes All-NBA which might be a lot more likely now with Bane.

This was a Riley-level day for Weltman!

Made a splash last summer that was a dud and decisively got off it. Found the guy he wanted and made it happen...paid the price and now looking forward at the next one. That's what the big dogs do! NO CLINGING to mediocre stuff-admit a mistake and pay the price to move forward decisively.
