Ok, so back story, I just finished my fourth year at this school. My first class was meh. Some good, some bad, all manageable. The class I had my second year was amazing. Like a one in a million, never going to get that type of class again. Class last year wasn't good but nobody in my grade last year really had a good class and the two aides would divide their time evenly and provide support in each classroom as needed. This year my class was an unmitigated disaster, like a third of my class was on a behavior chart, I had kids fist fighting, saying they wanted to kill each other, kicking things, punching, hitting, biting etc. Neither of the two aides would be anywhere near my room, always in the other two rooms. I brought this up oh we'll look into it. They spent time in my room for about a week and then disappeared again.

Then conferences came and after those I was called to the principal for a meeting because parents thought I was "too harsh" discussing their child's behavior and their lack of progress both academically and socially/emotionally.

So we sat down, figured out if we could make it work with me staying home with the kids (I'm free child care! ) and when we came to the conclusion that it worked, I gave them my letter of resignation and some pointed words directed at administration.

Moral of the story, support your teachers. We may give a happy exterior when we see you in the hall or during school events and stuff like that but the reality is we work our asses off, try to reach every kid we have and manage a classroom of 20+ kids in sometimes nearly impossible circumstances.

I've just finished Snowbound by Blake Crouch, that marks every one of his books read. Easily one of my favorite authors. I actually liked Recursion and The Pines trilogy the most even over Dark Matter. Snowbound was entertaining but nothing amazing. Need a new author in that same veinu kmjnb. I've read all of Andy Weir's, most of JA Konrath, Jack Kilborn. Any recommendations similar to those?

The Brilliance Trilogy by Marcus Sakey sounds like it'd be up your alley.

I always get Brilliance and Max Barry's "Lexicon" mixed up. That's actually the one I was thinking of, but they're both easy recommendations.

My parents would have whooped my ass if I ended up on a "behavior chart" I get gentle parenting and all that but parents complaining about their bad kids is wild.

I'm halfway through Brilliance and I can't put it down. Find myself picking it up between meetings for a quick 15-30 minute session.

I applaud you guys for reading. I was always a huge reader who got sucked into the online world and I spend way way way too much time online reading (mostly) dumb stuff. I checked out a little bit about Brilliance (I'm big on not knowing much about book/movies/TV shows ahead of time) and it looks good. The Kindle versions were $15 for all 3 so I just bought. They get added to the boatload of unread books I have on my Kindle. I don't work anymore and this is a mostly dead time for sports until football ramps up, I have no excuses not to dig in and start reading more.

I go in waves with reading. In 2023 I read something like 30 books. Was on a tear when my son was born. Then I did almost nothing in 2024 as I was just too busy. Now I'm getting back into it and I can tell I'm going to rip through a bunch. I also love audio books when I have long drives. I'd take an audio book over music or even most podcasts.

You have no excuses now MD. Get it done.
