Can someone explain to me how MJ finished 2nd in DPOY voting in '93 despite the Bulls being better defensively in 1994?

There was a lot of glazing for MJ, Kobe, and Lebron's defense long after they stopped being elite at it. I think some of those all-defensive team votes were just voters just assuming they were still the best defenders at their position if they were healthy.

Lebron fell off incredibly hard after 2018 defensively

Go back and rewatch the 2018 ECF’s for example. James isnt chasing his man off screens, switching defensively, closing out on shooters, boxing out…he is basically standing around the basket waiting for the opportunity to grab a rebound

That sums up most of his triple doubles in a nutshell, as well as Westbrook's.

defense is a team thing. dpoy is an unnecessary award. it needs to be something else. i don't know what, but something

Honest question.

So for you,is MVP an unnecessary award as well? If defense is a team thing, then offence is also a team thing.

The whole basketball is a team thing. The All-NBA selection might be unnecessary as well.

the mvp is an egalitarian award and should be, and thus voted upon (as it should be) for excellence.

and excellence being a subjective opinion that in SPORTS(in this case) has a varied circumstantial meaning.

yet people treat this award as if it should have a hard line be-all-end-all meaning and so there's just too much to-do over this award

dpoy is just too damn hard to determine as it IS a team thing (note: jj and kd on jj's podcast -"jrue would be the best defensive guard in the nba but playing on bad teams hurt him"), with even lesser impact in this era of the 3.
the mvp also is almost always based on offense, and it is as plain as the nose on your face that a single player can carry a team on offense but not on D(except russell IN THE 60'S). offense and defense are NOT the same and don't bear equal weight.

dpoy almost by definition is a CENTER'S award. centers dominate the dpoy and okay maybe that is just, since the game is moving away from centers.
so if I were to rationalize a vote for the worth of dpoy, i would say it is that,,,,since i do not like the 3shot in basketball.

And Chicago were a better defensive team without Pippen
Chicago conceded 88.2ppg in the first 35 games (which Pippen did not play) in 1997-98.
Overall Chicago conceded 89.6ppg in 1997-98, so their defense got worse when Pippen played!
In 1996-97 Chicago conceded 92.3ppg, and in 1995-96 Chicago conceded 92.9ppg.
