The EAST is going to be stronger next year...

CAVS still here... (prob swap Garland out)
IND with their confidence
NYK still here...
MIAMI + KD?
ORL + Bane
DET + free agent pick up(s)
BOS (may ride White/Green/Pritchard to the playoffs)
PHI (maybe Embiid returns? trade the #3 for a vet?)

Not bad... not as wide open as people were thinking after the Tatum injury. And more moves to come...

All stars DURING the year are different from all stars in the Playoffs. KAT is a prime example. Yes, he still gets points, but not always or often efficiently and did not give us $50M worth play. Especially on D.

I do agree conceptually with what you are saying....

In this specific instance though, his advanced analytics in playoffs were better than you think (even better in many respects than Brunson's)
\
Also coach being fired may mean FO believes his utilization on defense (which was the biggest negative) was not ideal either.

Having seen our Playoffs, I'd rather have TJ (Brunson backup) & Poetl (starter?) who together don't break $30M and have an extra $20M for another good bench player or two, for example. (I know TJ's not available, but you get the point).

The East is wide open right now. There's not a single dominant team left that scares anyone.

IND doesn't scare anyone.
CLE looking to move on from Garland.. they aren't scaring anyone even with him.
BOS takes a big step back. Is anyone scared without Tatum? They will look to move players too.
NYK will be running a new HC so, TBD but, no real way to add top end talent. Not scary.
ORL needs more than Bane. Not scary.
DET will be competitive. Not scary.
MIA with 38 year old Durant? No
PHI? WTF?

The East is there for the taking. Obviously this will need to be revisited after FA/trades/draft but, No one is a lock to even make the finals. Which is what wide open means.

Hearing some players like Marcus Morris, I doubt Embid is back at near full strength. Det & ORlando will be better. Miami? Still lack something at guard I'd think. Boston will be good even without Horford and maybe Porz. But there is no clear cut favorite - UNLESS we/the new coach can do something about KAT on D. And on O we need more movement and speed to compete with Indy. But wide open doesn't mean no tough teams, it means no clear cut favorite.

Like others have stated, I do think Mikal has the best chance to be moved if there's no extension talks. This FO tends to value player control and it's not like Mikal really proved himself an invaluable piece to the team consistently last year.

Maybe the FO talks themselves into a new coach unlocking him and don't want to sell low on a guy they paid a premium for to bring in.

But I also think they could look at this as somewhat of a sunk cost and try to extract as much value to get better fitting pieces in that enhance the core a bit more than Mikal did last season.

I just wonder how the FO would approach a Mikal trade. Would they look to bolster depth or try to use Mikal to get a perceived talent upgrade from somewhere else.

I think with Mikal, I would lean more to getting quality depth and maybe re-stocking our picks a bit but I oculd see the argument to just amplifying the talent level and hoping a coach can get something out of Dadiet, Kolek, and Huk to naturally provide depth

I think with a Mikal trade you would target middling teams looking for some more juice in their SL.

A few ideas I had:

Monk/Keon Ellis/draft comp for Mikal - This is my favorite Mikal for depth trade. Idea would be you get more shot creation and shooting off the bench with Monk. Then you can either start Deuce or Keon and have 48 minutes of good POA defense.

Coby White/Lonzo Ball 1-2 FRPs for Mikal - Similar idea to the above. Bulls have a glut of guards and probably don't want to pay Coby long term with Giddey, Dosunmo, Buzelis and Heurter all there.

Herb Jones/Jordan Hawkins/Alvarado + 7th pick for Mikal - I, admittedly, don't love this one but getting the 7th pick would allow the Knicks to then parlay a bigger deal with possibly Mitch or OG attached. Or they can try to find a productive rookie in this pretty good draft class.

These might all suck upon review but it's really hard to find a good Mikal trade because that 24 million is just tough to work with to get a real impact player or players back.

Suns publicly basically saying they would trade him before the draft they basically nuked there leverage. Now Durant and Rich leaking stuff like not wanting to go to Minny and Minny doesn't want to give up Gobert/DD + whatever other assets for a 1 year rental.

The Heat are basically just offering PHX potential luxury tax relief but there package is basically going to be headlined by Jacquez? Are they even offering Ware in the deal?

Suns asking for #2 pick or Castle for 37 year old KD is comical.

They are in a **** spot from there own doing.

I guess they can get bailed out by maybe TOR just saying hey we want to win a bit more next year and get a big name like they did with Kawhi but this isn't Kawhi in his prime....KD at his age aint making a non playoff team a contender.

I'm kind of happy seeing that KD's market value has dropped. In terms of helping teams win, he's always been less than his stats. He treats fans badly, treated us badly, treated Kenny Atkinson badly, has a severe injury history and is going to be 38 before the next season starts. All in all, as MP just said, he won't make a lesser team a contender. I don't see him helping us in any way, unless he gets bought out and we replace Cam Payne with KD for the same salary.

If we had our same coach, we would be contending for the #1 seed. Right now, who knows. I don't think Bane really tips the scales for ORL. I don't know if Miami makes the deal for KD and if they do, is current KD, Herro, and Bam enough?
Pistons are not really going to be adding a free agent (maybe MLE?) so their best case is something like a trade of Tobias for KP or something like that...

Mikal gets so underrated around here. Outside of Brunson and KAT offensively... NO ONE was consistently proving to be invaluable. As a team though, they were in the ECF with poor coaching.

We need better coaching and a deeper bench that actually gets to play. That's why we didn't get passed Indiana. It wasn't for lack of talent. It wasn't because of Mikal.

When we pick the next HC they need to build a team he thinks he can win with. Whoever has to go can be decided then. I wouldn't expect any big deals happening at all but, things pop up every year. The league is still trying to figure out how to work around these stupid apron rules. That's how we got KAT.

Mikal has a say in wherever he goes if we did trade him. He has the leverage. So, while I would keep him, it's not like we can just sit here naming players we would take back in a deal. He has an extension coming. It's not that simple

I guess they can get bailed out by maybe TOR just saying hey we want to win a bit more next year and get a big name like they did with Kawhi but this isn't Kawhi in his prime....KD at his age aint making a non playoff team a contender.

the raptors aint offering sh*t either. 1 good pick and some combination of rj, quick, olynk supposedly.

No one is giving up anything for a guy with one foot in retirement. It's that simple. He's an injury risk for half a decade now. He won't carry a team anywhere. He just doesn't have the value anymore. His contract can kill a team.

The market for him is nowhere near what the Suns paid to get him either. They need to figure out how to make it work or take a beating on the resale value.

Nothing is really that good.

HOU headlining the deal with Jalen Green (who doesn't fit next to Booker)

SA headlining the deal with Vassell + Barnes contract

MIA with Wiggins+Robinson+Jacquez

and are teams really offering a lot of draft capital?

Minny was there best chance with a package (Gobert+DD) but Durant and his team quickly nixed that with the leak he doesn't want to play there.
