Does Haliburton, Luka and Jokic getting to the Finals make scouts value passing iq differently?
Haliburton is not a consensus top 5 player like Jokic and Luka yet his positive impact on the Pacers appears to be comparable to those two.
When your best player is an unselfish, elite passer does this hold more value today than in past eras? Does the way the game is played in the NBA today place a higher importance on the nuances of passing?
It seems like it does because it gets everybody on the court on the same page.

This trade wasn't some conspiracy - it was just a GM wanting AD bad enough where in most people's eyes he overpaid by a long shot to get him.

Re: Does Haliburton, Luka and Jokic getting to the Finals make scouts value passing iq differently?
One, I don't think his impact on the Pacers is equal to theirs on their respective finals teams, at all. Two, the Pacers going to the finals is more likely to make decision makers value the advantages they've actually had over the teams they've beat - namely coaching, pace, a deep bench, and two-way players at most positions.
Haliburton is the Pacers best player, yes, but the reason they've been successful this playoffs goes way, way beyond him. No scouts were sitting there thinking "no, we don't need a great passer on our team", and then the Pacers/Mavs/Nuggets went to the finals and they thought "gee I guess I was wrong". If they did, they wouldn't have a job in the first place. The Pacers stellar depth, deep bench, and GOAT caliber coaching allows their star player to be as unselfish as he is. And if every team in the league could have all three, AND a star player, they would... don't you think?
Unfortunately for many teams, having all of those things is not easy to get. And a great passer is only one ingredient in the recipe, and far from an ingredient nobody knew they wanted until now.

Yes. Several coaches have stated that if your team doesn't have a reliable blitz package to use against star players as a playoff adjustment you're dead in the water. At the end of the day if you're cooking as a star you will get blitzed and swarmed with a frightening degree of efficacy and precision compared to what you've seen in the regular season. Every star that wants to be legitimately unguardable needs a high tier passing game in their bag. And the best of the best have a transcendent one.

Nash lead the NBA in offence 11 consecutive seasons lol. That should have some evaluators putting respect on the name of offensive systems which feature 1337 point guards/passing talents.

Let's playin for 9th!

If the Bulls do, you would be complaining to much to ever hear it.
NBA fan logic we need to trade one of two best players because (Player X) one needs to shine more.

Even as a fan while looking at prospects, I dismiss low assist players pretty quickly when the goal is hoping to find a surprise star. I make exceptions when evaluating drop coverage bigs.

Its been an ages old take that there's a correlation between passing vision and ability to rotate correctly. People with poor vision have a fundamental flaw with their processing speed and decision making overall so this is a good practice to have. Very rarely do you see bigs with genius level defensive rotations that aren't good passers.

Based on recent draft rankings, no.
Being able to switch and defend is more valued. But shooting and athleticism (measurements) still reign supreme. Magic also just coughed up 4 1st round picks for a shooter, not a playmaker.

Passing only matters if the other guys can shoot or finish -
Luka doesn’t count cause he takes 20+ shots a game… he shoots wayyyyy more than he passes-
Jokic doesnt count cause he is huge- he is bigger than LeBron and can shoot like a guard on outside and a center on the inside… you can’t plan for this-
When Hali is on and healthy he doesn’t turn the ball over- that’s his super power
Hali is either vastly under or over rated and it depends on the quarter if he is good or bad -

On a Mike D'Antoni Suns team or on a Pop's Spurs team, definitely. The most valuable skill.

The outlier playmaker in this year’s draft is Demin and he seems to be slipping a bit, so it doesn’t seem that most NBA front offices have caught up.
